Part - 6
"My mother was a single mother. She was engaged to marry my
father Arvind Malik.", he said gritting his teeth. "He ditched her two
days before their marriage. Disappeared without any news about his
where-about. Maa was devastated because she loved him deeply."
He stood up from the bench and walked over to the banyan tree nearby,
trying to gather courage to tell her about the worst part. Keeping a hand on
the tree trunk, he took a deep breathe.
Khushi could clearly see his struggle. Walking up to stand behind him, she
squeezed his shoulder and said, " You don't have to do this. We will do
this some other day when you're ready."
"No. I would like to do this today.", sighing deeply he began again, "So
a month after the marriage date, Maa learnt that she was pregnant.
She knew that it would be a great dishonor to Nanu's reputation if it
became public knowledge that she was pregnant before marriage.
She was willing to move out to a new city. But my Nani, being the
outright beautiful woman that she is, refused to let her go. She
refused to let the society decide her daughter's life. And that's why
Di and I have Maa's surname Singh Raizada'.Maa started helping
Nanu in his business and brought us up."
"How did she emmm... Die?", Khushi asked hesitatingly making him turn
around.
"They died in a car accident when I was 8. Maa and Nanu. Were
returning from a conference in Nainital. A drunk truck driver hit their
car. They died on the spot.", he said with moist eyes.
Khushi could no longer see him in pain. She hugged him close to her heart
just like a baby. But he was a baby, wasn't he? He had lost his childhood
in these sad incidents. Running her hands over his back, she tried soothing
his pain. She let out the breathe, she didn't realize she had been holding,
when his arms wrapped around her waist, hugging her tightly to himself.
After a few moments, Arnav moved out of his wife's comforting embrace.
"I'm sorry I got overwhelmed.", he said taking her hands in his.
"It's okay. I've got you here. You can get as overwhelmed as you like
with me.", she said smiling slightly.
"But you know what's pathetic? Maa refused to believe that our
father had cheated her. She strongly believed that there must have
been a reason for his behavior.", he said fisting his palms.
"She must have loved him a lot to believe so.", Khushi said uncurling
his fists. " But what is important that she nurtured two beautiful
individuals. You and Di.It takes a lot of courage to raise up her
children single-handedly. And she did a marvelous job at it. Maa was
a beautiful mother indeed.", Khushi said giving him a radiant smile.
How easily did she accept him with his horrific past? And did she just call
his mother Maa'? What was this lady made up of? Shouldn't she be
repelled from him or his past?, Arnav wondered disbelievingly.
"Aren't you affected by my past? I mean I've never had a father? A
normal upbringing?", he asked genuinely curious.
"I have every reason and proof to contradict that not having a father
does not decide a person's character. And no your past doesn't
affect me at all. It never will.", she said looking straight into his eyes.
He gave her his heart-felt smile.
"I have a question.", Khushi asked sheepishly.
"Fire away."
"When she was pregnant, Maa had Di. When did she have you?"
"Oh Di and I are twins.", he answered calmly.
"Whaaattt? Are you kidding me? You both are twins?", Khushi went
hyper.
"Ummm yeah. Why is that so unbelievable?", he asked amused with
her reaction.
"You call her Di. So I assumed..."
"Oh that.",he grinned. "She is one hundred and twenty seconds elder
than me. So she insists that I call her Di.", he said rolling his eyes at his
drama queen sister.
"Does one of you falls sick when the other does? Twins aise hi hote
hain na? (Twins are like this right)", she asked putting her Bollywood
knowledge to full use.
"Nahi Khushi. Aisa sirf filmon main hota hain. (No Khushi. These
things happen in movies only)", he said shaking his head at her
craziness.
"Oh okay. But I don't believe this. My husband has a twin. Devi Maiya
this is amazing.", she said hugging him in her excitement, her hands
looping around his neck.
Only when she felt these butterflies in her stomach when his hands went
around her waist once again, firmly this time, that she realized their
closeness.
"I'm sorry.", she said getting away, flushing.
"Don't be. Biwi ho tum meri. Haq hai tumhara, mujh pe.(You're my
wife. You have the right, on me.)", he said making her blush all shades
of red.
"Don't look so cute. Or I will be tempted to kiss you.",he said smirking
wickedly.
Khushi snapped her head up listening to him. But his wicked smirk made
her want to challenge him. After all she couldn't let him win always now,
could she?
"Why don't you give in to the temptation then?", she asked with a
seductive smile.
Though Arnav was shocked at his wife's bold statement, it didn't take him
long to recover. Walking towards her, he cornered her against the tree,
keeping them hidden from view. Cupping the nape of her neck with one
hand and slipping his other hand around her waist, he pulled her closer to
him.
Khushi could feel her heart beating so loudly that she was afraid he could
hear it. She had not expected him to follow through her words. But she
could not stop him when he leaned in. Something just felt right. His
chocolate brown orbs sought her permission to which she gave an
imperceptible nod.
Had he not been so close to her, he must have missed her nod. Seeing her
submission, he leaned in to plant his firm, warm lips on her right cheek in a
deep peck. Her blushing cheeks looked so edible that he couldn't help
himself from repeating the same process on her left cheek.
Just as he was about to kiss her rosy plump lips, his ringtone broke the
trance. Khushi snapped her eyes open to look into dark brown eyes.
Remembering their first two kisses, she blushed crimson. Unable to face
him at the moment, she buried her face in his chest.
Wrapping his left arm around her, a fond smile lingering on his lips, he took
out his cell phone from his coat pocket with his right hand.
Seeing Aman, his Manager, calling him now when he knew about his visit
to the orphanage, Arnav frowned.
"Yeah Aman bolo (Speak)."
"..."
"What? How could this happen? What are we gonna do now?"
