Hi there,

Finally I read all the three chapters :). Really intense and painful story. Wonder what happened in the past that shattered the deep love they have, left them with haunting memories and their lives are loomed with dark clouds of pain.

Hope you continue soon :).

Chapter Four:

Bleeding Hearts

"Take this Khushi. Go and change." Anjali handed her the shalwar kameez she had found in her closet after a time-consuming hunt.

Khushi stayed at her place, screening no moment, lost in some other world, her eyes fogged up. Anjali exhaled a deep breath and then limped to where Khushi stood. Placing a warm hand on her frozen up, quivering body she shook her gently. Khushi moved at once, stymied. She looked at Anjali with quizzical eyes, every now and then her apprehensive eyes trekked to the door and then to back to her.

"Relax Khushi. Chotey is not here." Anjali assured her.

"Here have this. Now please for the umpteenth time I'm asking you to CHANGE!" She said holding up the suite to Khushi. She took the pair with deliberate slowness and muttering something which Anjali deemed to be "Thanks" made her way to the bathroom closing it with an absolute softness behind her.

Anjali had sufficient raison d'tre to sum up that something was wide of the mark, really wrong. Arnav and then Khushi. They were equally distressed, and the cause had been their meeting. She had seen the look in their eyes and the indecipherable emotions flickering across their faces. How they had their eyes upon each other, eyes that had longing, eyes that had been disinclined to be stirred.

And that very instant she had known who Khushi was. She was her Chotey's Khushi.

The very same Khushi, who had altered Arnav for the better or for the worse that she could not make out.

Khushi who had turned Arnav's life in turmoil.

Khushi who had broken his heart.

Khushi who had left him fighting for love, life, family. She still remembered his heart wrenching state. His excruciating screams at nighttime. How he called out for years to her in his slumber. She had eye witnessed all that. She had witnessed his breakdown. And for Anjali those times were the darkest in Arnav's life. Nothing she had done proved rewarding enough for Arnav to wipe away the inscriptions of letdown, betrayal and above all love from the depth of his heart. She had cried and begged only to be watched back with misted undaunted eyes. For a year Arnav had barreled down to the pits of hell and back, wounded and burnished by what life offered to him in all its mighty glory. He had wandered in the valleys of despair and lonesomeness. To say that all what happened to him was because of Khushi was off beam.

He had the misfortune of losing his parents... and his best friend to the command of the inevitable death, then the bereavement of having his one and only sister handicapped for life, and last but not the least having the ill luck of being deceived by his Khushi. She wished with all her heart to bring her back to him. Anjali treasured Arnav more than her own life. She had endured all that with him. But now when Khushi was back, she resolved she would do anything, anything to get them back together. She was no child; she was a married woman of 35 with a family of her own. She had seen the world and in the little time she had known Khushi it was well clear that she had reasons of her own to leave that day.

There were pieces of the puzzle that were missing. Arnav reviled Khushi, or that was what he had been trying to make himself believe since a long time. But she knew no matter how much he tried, he would never be able to make himself hate her. What she had seen in his eyes today was sufficient to demonstrate her intuition. Moreover Love was one of the few things gifted to human by God which keeps us alive even when the hope fades away taking with it the will of keep going. She would do anything...

*******************

Arnav paced back and forth in his room with stomping steps. Hands clenching and unclenching with predator-like movements, jaw jutted out with inflexibility presenting his present state temperament. He cut short at the rear end of his room turning over the settee with an out rush of anger. Then unexpectedly he slid to the ground near his bed, as if he had been behest to. Arnav Singh Raizada who had elapsed how it feels to be ordered around by someone had complied with stillness. Then with moment by moment tears began to run down his flushed cheeks, and with muffled cries his body effervesced with hiccups.

Life was becoming merciful and endangering at the same time. He couldn't agree more. With all the negative and positive energies radiating from everywhere he had the thought of fading somewhere and never getting back. Kneeling beside the bed was a human. No Arnav Singh Raizada, no man of authority, no man with the intact and prohibited feelings. He was just a human, passing through a hard and resilient phase of life. A man who had fallen down, but had picked himself up with utmost conviction and a goal in life. A goal not for himself but for the handful of people he still loved. People who had given him a reason to live when all the hopes of living had touched the verge of invisibility. He had been victorious in manipulating his faith but his heart had always acted on its own consent. That was it, enough of all he could take. It was time...almost time. Khushi would pay back. Arnav Singh Raizada would make her pay back in debt. At that moment his blood shot eyes held the inferno of vengeance and cinders of detestation.

******************

"Di! Di!" Arnav's voice boomed across the dining hall. Anjali limped out of the kitchen towards his brother who was seething with anger.

"What is it Chotey?" She inquired eloquent of the reason behind his fury.

"Where is Khushi Di?" Even saying his name made his heart thump.

"She is gone?" She replied gravely.

"Gone?" Did his heart break all over again?

"Yes gone." Anjali confirmed.

"Where has she gone in this storm? Didn't you stop her Di?"

"I did Chotey. I even gave her my clothes to change into. But when I got back into the room she was not there. She didn't even change. I combed the whole house. She has gone." She explicated with notes of worry evident in her voice.

"The nerve of that girl! I want her out of this job."

"You have no need to Chotey. I don't think she would be back anyways."

Double nerve of that girl! No one escaped the wrath of Arnav Singh Raizada. He would show her the right place for the inexcusable excuse of her being.

"She will be back. I know she will be. She can do anything for money. And you will keep her, Di. She will tutor our Adi." Arnav spitted out the venomous words.

"I know who she is Arnav..."Anjali trailed off mid sentence analyzing her brother's face. And there it was. So clearly stamped. She could literally see love dancing and vacationing at the shores of Hawaii. She would go to Hawaii for vacations next year. Eureka! What a fool his brother was to not be aware of his real feelings. But wasn't this how love worked? Love could be lethal, dangerous, and destructive sometimes but it could be molded to the heart's desire. And for now Arnav was letting his brain empower and dominate his heart. He needed time. Khushi needed time. Maybe they would be able to carve the roads of their hearts in the same direction and maybe those roads would melt into one someday. For that they would have to walk and make their road pathways. How Anjali wished she could convert the maybe into surely. I will make this happen. She resolved.

Arnav looked at her with enlarged eyes, his mouth forming a thin line. "Di I..." and just like that Arnav Singh Raizada was at a loss of words. That was news! Time to call the Times of India! Words had failed D Arnav Singh Raizada.

Shaking his head with closed eyes he turned his back on Anjali and strode towards the stairs.

**********************

Is it time to die? So soon? Khushi sauntered on the road, her vision blurred and mind thumping every second with a new wave of pain. She couldn't register what had happened or why it had happened. After all these years when every hope has evaporated and every memory appeared like a dream. When her nightmares had reduced to the consistency of tearing apart never coming together. The horror was always there, fresh and omnipotent.

Five years...five painful years and yet the pain is still there like it had been. Time had failed to heal wounds. Time had failed to blur the memories. Time had failed to let slip the edge of the past from my hands. Time had failed her...

His face appeared in front of her out of nowhere and she lost it. Shouting at the top of her voice, so loud she could feel her vocal cords erupting with the thunderous vibrations, she started running. She wanted to run away from the occurring not knowing that she was running towards not away from it. Driven by her instincts and oblivious to the downpour she ran. In those moments of panic nothing mattered. Not her pain. Not her state. Not the bewildered stares of the spectators. Not the throbbing. What mattered was her fear, her want of vanishing away from the surface of mother earth.

She didn't know how but she found the parted doors of her house standing ahead of her when she drew up. The warm gust of air from the inside traveled down her body and invaded her senses. Her brain thumped one last time with the force of herculean nature and she gave way.
