COMING HOME

Part 1

The phone call...The news

The sound of the alarm startled Khushi right out of bed. She turned to her side to see no one next to her. She scurried out of bed, neatly folded her blanket and then straightened out the surface of the bed. She made her way into the bathroom and got herself ready. As she walked downstairs, her frown curved into a smile as she got a whiff of pancakes and syrup. But as soon as she entered the kitchen a frown returned to her face.

"Arnav what on earth are you trying to do?" she said in a confused tone.

He looked over his shoulder, "Making us breakfast"

"I can see that, but what are you doing to my kitchen?" she asked, this time pointing at the kitchen. He turned around, and for a few seconds he took in the site before him; the counter was crowded with pans and spoons, all covered in syrup, the sink was filled with pots and pans.

He looked at her, "I didn't realise...I'll clean up."

She walked towards him, "You go get cleaned up, and I'll clear up this mess."

"Okay," He said giving her a peck on her cheek and left the kitchen.

By the time he had showered and returned downstairs, she had already managed to clean up the entire kitchen, making the mess seem as if it was never there in the first place. She had also dished out their breakfast onto two plates and was about to take it to the table, when he cleared his throat saying, "Let me." She flashed a smile, and handed him the plates.

Just as he was about to sit, his phone rang, he looked at it and said, "It's important", she nodded and he made his way into the next room. She started eating her pancakes as she scanned the newspaper. In the other room she could hear him saying, "Yes... I understand but..." For a moment there was silence and then he said firmly, "Okay. Yes, I'll be there, Yes Sir."

He returned to the dining room and she studied his face. She knew exactly what was coming, by just looking at his face. Just as he opened his mouth to say something, she got up and made her way to him. He started off, "Khushi I."

She cupped his face and said, "I'll survive."

She enveloped her arms around him and he held her close. He pressed his face against her hair, inhaling her scent. She closed her eyes to savour the moment.

She whispered, "Come on lets finish breakfast." They walked back to the table and had their breakfast in silence. Every now and then they caught each other's gaze and gave a faint smile.

After breakfast he excused himself and went upstairs while Khushi cleared the table and washed up the dishes. After she was finished, she started pacing the length of the kitchen. She kept her palm above her heart trying to reduce the speed of her racing heartbeat. Her mind was wandering around, 'Should I tell him now? He has as much as a right to know as I do.'

Making her decision, she marched upstairs, slowing her pace as she reached their bedroom door. From the crack of the door, she could see Arnav's figure, he was packing his suitcase. She took a deep breath and pushed the door open. He turned with the sound of the door and let out a faint smile. She could do nothing but return the smile nervously. He walked towards the cupboard to continue packing.

As he stood by the cupboard she embraced him from behind. He jerked a little as he was caught off guard. He took his palm and covered hers which rested on his stomach. Feeling his contact, it sent a chill down her spine.

They remained still for a moment. She couldn't stop thinking about how to begin the conversation. He spun around and saw the expression on her face. "What is it?" He asked.

She took a step back and studied at him from head to toe. He pulled her onto the bed.

'It's now or never.' Khushi thought.

She took a deep breath and blurted out, "I'm pregnant... four months along."

She looked away and waited for his response. Seconds passed, minutes passed; she turned to him. He had a stolid face on. She gulped and her lips quivered, "Arnav...please say something."

COMING HOME

Part 2

We'll be alright... & goodbye

He came out of his trance when he felt Khushi holding his shoulder. He leaned forward and uttered, "Khushi ... you... you're pregnant?"

She nodded and whispered, "Yeah."

Arnav's lips curved into a smile and pulled her into a hug, "Khushi... you... you gave me the best news of my life." Khushi relaxed against his body and her face lit up when she heard these words. Against his ear she whispered, "I love you."

He pulled back and cupped her face, "I love you too." He kissed her forehead and asked, "When did you find out?"

She nodded and held his hands, "Yesterday, you know I've always had an irregular cycle, so I didn't think missing it was anything major. But for the past couple of days I started feeling different. I went to the doctor yesterday and did some tests and the doctor confirmed it."

He caressed her arm, "What was your reaction when you found out?"

Khushi leaned against his shoulder, "I was happy because its been my dream to be a mother and I couldn't wait to share this phase of our lives together. But I was also shocked because we had never spoken about having kids this early, especially with you being a soldier and having to leave so often. Our lives have been so hectic; we've been married for a year but you've been away for six months of that on duty. This morning when I found out that you had to leave again for another six month mission, I was scared... worried."

Arnav kissed her hand, "Don't worry, we'll get through these six months... before you know it I'll be at your side again and as for the baby, it came as a surprise but I really am ecstatic."

He lifted her top and explored the surface of her stomach with his palms. His eyebrows frowned and looked up at her, "You're not really showing...is that common?"

She placed her hands on top of his, "I asked yesterday and the doctor said it all depends on your body, everyone's different and it's normal to not show early with your first." He nodded and pulled her into yet another hug.

. . . . .

Later that night as they lay in bed, Khushi snuggled onto Arnav's chest and his arms protectively wrapped around her.

She spoke in a soft tone, "Arnav before it was just me waiting for you to come home, now it's two of us."

"Hmm" he responded.

You know whenever you leave I always have that fear that maybe that would be the last time I'll be seeing..." She hugged him tightly not being able to continue.

He tightened his grip on her, burying his face into her hair. He whispered into her ear, "Shh... we'll be alright."

She choked out, "Arnav, tell me you'll be back."

He touched her stomach, "I promise you and our baby, I'm coming home."

She put her hand on top of Arnav's, "I love you Arnav." She nuzzled into his neck and savoured their last few intimate moments before he had to leave.

. . . .

The next morning was bittersweet. Bright and early, Arnav and Khushi along with hundreds of other couples or relatives bid their loved ones goodbye at the airport.

Arnav and Khushi's family members had come to see Arnav off as well. After they all said their goodbyes, they left Arnav and Khushi alone so they could spend some time with each other.

After a long emotional hug she let go of him and said, "Take care baby."

Arnav nodded and wiped away her tears, "I love you..."

Khushi smiled, "I know... I love you too."

They hugged each other again until the announcement of the flight was made.

He whispered, "I'll miss you so much."

She sniffled, "I'll miss you too."

Arnav bent down on one knee and hugged Khushi's stomach. He kissed her stomach and said, "I can't wait to see you baby. Take care of your mummy. Daddy will be back as soon as he can."

He got up and kissed Khushi one last time. He held her hands and said, "Bye."

"Bye." She replied and let go of his hands.

She watched him leave remembering him promising his return. With a heavy heart she turned around and walked out of the airport, to where their family members were waiting for her.

COMING HOME

Part 3

I'm coming home...

Khushi's heart raced as she stood in the airport waiting to see her husband. She had been waiting with a batted breath for 15 minutes near the Arrivals area. She rocked her 1 month old angel in her arms while she kept her eyes glued ahead of her.

5 minutes, 10 minutes... as the time ticked away she reminisced on the last 6 months. Every day since Arnav left, she would say numerous prayers to protect her husband. She had the support of her family and his family but she didn't have her husband, he was her everything. From her pregnancy check-ups to every new sensation of her pregnancy, to the birth of their child, Arnav was not there to experience it. She knew this was all a part of the life of an army wife and it was a normal entity to undergo in a family with an army officer.

There were times though that she wished she could just contact him and persuade him to return to her, where she could see him and shield him from the danger of his job. But on the other hand she also knew he was serving his country, he was a brave and noble soldier. She was proud of the man who she married and the father of her child.

Her thoughts were broken when she saw the figure of her husband in the far distance. Her heart fluttered when she saw him walking out of the terminal; Army officer Arnav Singh Raizada. Her lips trembled as she felt the tears running down her cheeks. She looked up and sent a mental prayer to her devi maiya. She wiped her tears and began walking towards him.

When he saw her, the love of his life, his heart began beating rapidly. He smiled brightly and walked quicker. His walk broke into a jog. He dropped his bag and enveloped her into his arms.

Time stood still as they made contact with each other. He pulled back and kissed her temple. He hugged her again and she broke into sobs, Khushi ki ansoo.

He moved back and looked at the angel in his wife's arms. "She's beautiful." Tears began rolling down his eyes. He took his baby into his arms for the first time; it felt surreal to him. He held the baby close to his heart as if she was a porcelain doll. He analysed his sleeping baby's face. Her soft lashes, her little pink nose, her chubby cheeks, her thin lips... her little chest heaving with each breath she took.

He looked up at his wife and said, "Khushi, I'm...I'm a dad... I have a daughter. We have a daughter. I love you so much" Khushi replied, "I love you too..." She side hugged him while both of them cried. The moment they were waiting for since he left was here.

They were a family again; Complete.

After a few minutes Khushi took the baby into her arms while Arnav picked up his bags. Hand in hand, they got into the waiting car and the driver drove the little family straight home where they were welcomed by close family and friends. Everyone rejoiced to have Arnav home after a long 6 months. Relief, joy and every other emotion that could be thought of were displayed when the rest of the family saw him.

So this was the final part of the Three shot "Coming Home" Hope everyone enjoyed the short journey of this 3Shot. I was inspired to write this when I saw the Lifetime TV series, "Coming Home," and I was further touched when I saw a video of a solider meeting his baby for the first time.

My heart and prayers goes out to each and every family that endures such a situation in their lives... You all really have the courage and strength... both the families and the soldiers are true heroes...
