Can't Let You Go
"So, Who will tell me the answer to the third problem?" Mr. Singh, the mathematics' teacher asked out loud to the batch.
A boy raised his hand.
"Yes, Arnav, tell me."
"The answer would be x2 + ax + C, Sir", Arnav spoke confidently.
"Correct, so- " and Mr. Singh started explaining the problem to the other students.
It was a beautiful evening in Lucknow and Toppers Tutorial Classes were on full swing. Arnav checked the seat parallel to his in the next row and seeing it empty, he wondered, "Where is she?"
Thinking about her took him to the time when Arnav first met her.
It was the first day of his tutorial class. The study pressure was increasing and every student needs guidance, hence the joining of these classes.
He came there and sat at the last bench, not interested being 'part of the crowd'. He was reading a book, waiting for the class to be started. Just then he saw a blur of colour and the whole class strangely erupted in laughter. Not getting what caused the laughing riot, he peeped through his book to see a girl collecting the books and putting them in her bag, which were all over the floor.
"May be she tripped", Arnav thought. Frowning at the other students for their insensible behaviour, he went to help the girl.
"Here." Arnav handed her the last notebook. The girl was muttering something under her breath and he couldn't help but wonder what she was saying. A small smile adorned his lips, shaking his head, "Crazy girl", he thought.
"Shukriya" ("Thank you") came the sweet voice, which took Arnav out of his thoughts. He looked up to see the most beautiful eyes he has ever seen. It was a beautiful shade of brown, almost like honey. Hearing the girl's voice Arnav shook himself out of his thoughts and feeling little awkward gave her a tight smile. They both stood up. Every other student were engrossed in their own work by now.
"Humara naam Khushi hain." ("My name is Khushi"), she said politely extendinh her hand before him.
"Arnav." He said and they shook their hands.
Khushi smiled brightly at Arnav and he could only just watch her, being all the more spellbound than he already was.
"T- " before Khushi could start her question the teacher entered the classroom and everyone settled in his or her respective seats. Arnav and Khushi too got back to their seats. Arnav noticed, Khushi sat on the bench parallel to his in the next row. He smiled inwardly for reason unknown to him. But at the next moment sending all other thoughts to the back of his mind, he concentrated on what the teacher was teaching.
Arnav's thoughts were interrupted when a paper ball hit his head. He closed his eyes little angrily but it vanished as soon as it came when he realized who did this. Only one person had the guts to disturb Arnav Singh Raizada and get away with it. His eyes directly saw the place that was empty till now.
Khushi was smiling, no grinning, like an idiot and on the verge of throwing one more paper ball. Arnav mocked a glare at her, he could never ever EVER be angry with Khushi. But that did not falter her grin even for a second; she loves to irritate Arnav. And Arnav always let her do that. He loves the happiness that comes on Khushi's face and he could do anything to keep that smile on her face forever.
They became very good friends in a very short time. Not the kind of friends who always hang out with each other or talk over the phone and text each other all day, but the kind of friends who know that they'll be beside each other in all their good and bad times or when needed, who understand each other.
Another paper ball brought Arnav, who had a slight smile on his lips thinking about his friendship with Khushi, from his past to the present, classroom of Toppers Tutorials.
He looked at Khushi, who had a confused look seeing Arnav smiling on his own. Before she could ask anything Arnav pointing at his wristwatch asked in sign language to Khushi "Kaha thi tum?" ("Where were you?")
But Khushi didn't get the chance to answer Arnav as Mr. Singh interrupted, giving another sum to the students.
-------
The class was over, Arnav and Khushi left the classroom and now was on their way to the bus-stop. They were crossing the road and chatting. It was a very busy road. They had to cross the road in order to get to the bus-stop.
"Aaj jalebi nahi khani?" ("Don't want to eat jalebi today?"), asked Arnav chuckling a bit. Reason - last week Khushi took a treat from Arnav and ate almost four plates of jalebi and could not attend the classes for the next two days, because of obvious reason. From that day Arnav purposely used to remind Khushi of her jalebi-fiasco, almost everyday.
"Kyu mazak uda rahe ho humara?" ("Why are you making fun of me?"), said Khushi pouting a bit.
Arnav laughed at her cute face and said "Toh kya karu? Itni jalebi ek saath kaun khata hai, Khushi?" ("So what do you expect? Who eats this much jalebi in one go, Khushi?")
"Hum. Aur zaroor uss jalebi mein hi koi gadbad thi, warna humaare saath aisa pehle kabhi nahi hua." ("Me. And I am sure there was something wrong with those jalebis otherwise this never happened with me.")
"Yeah, right.", came the sarcastic reply from Arnav and he went ahead not noticing that Khushi stopped in the middle of the road picking her kerchief as it slipped from her hand. Not getting any reply from Khushi, Arnav looked back and saw Khushi two-three steps behind, looking and cleaning her kerchief by her hand .
"Khushi!" Arnav called out. Khushi looked up at him.
A loud horn alerted Arnav and he saw that a truck was coming towards where Khushi was standing. His breathing stopped.
"KHUSHI..!!" yelled Arnav, he went towards Khushi and yanked her arm towards himself and they both got off the road. The truck missed Khushi by an inch.
Arnav held Khushi very tightly to himself. Both their breathings were heavy. Arnav had closed his eyes very tightly. He did not want to even imagine to what would have happened if he had not noticed Khushi at the right time. The moment Arnav saw the truck speeding towards Khushi, a chilling fear gripped his heart, fear of losing something dear to him, fear of losing Khushi.
Arnav broke the hug but holding Khushi by her arms started yelling at her, "Pagal ho tum? Dhyan kaha rehta hai tumhara?" ("Are you crazy? What were you thinking?")
"Arnav, wo rumal- " ("Arnav, that kerchief- "), but Khushi could not complete her sentence.
"SHUT UP! Just shut up! Pata hai main kitna darr gaya tha!" ("SHUT UP! Just shut up! Do you know how afraid I was?"), said Arnav shaking Khushi vigorously, then cupping her face he continued, "Agar tumhe kuchho jatatoh- " ("If somethinghad happenedto you- "), Arnav could not complete his sentence. It was very difficult for him.
Khushi was stunned seeing Arnav like this. She put her hands on his and said, "Arnav, hum thik hain. Kuch nahi hua. Tumne kuch nahi hone diya humein." ("Arnav, I am fine. Nothing happened. You did not let anything happen to me.")
Arnav still was not convinced. He again took Khushi in a close embrace and murmered, "Nahi kho sakta tumhe, Khushi. Nahi kho sakta." ("Can't lose you, Khushi. I can not lose you").
-----
That night laying on bed when Arnav was thinking about the evening's incident, how he was this close to lose Khushi, he realized that how important was Khushi to him. Even the thought of not having Khushi in his life made Arnav shiver in fear. He was surprised. Surprised at the thought that when did he become so attached to Khushi.
"Kal tak toh woh meri sirf ek achi dost thi. Fir aaj aisa kyu lag raha hai ki sab kuch badal gaya humaare beech." ("She was just my good friend till yesterday. Then why I am having a feeling that everything changed between us from today."), thought Arnav. He was confused with his feelings towards Khushi. Confused at his reaction for Khushi. He could not understand whether it was just friendship or something beyond that.
He did not realize that it was just the start of a new feeling, a new emotion. It was the birth of a blooming bud, called love.
Well love or not, that night one thing Arnav promised to himself that no matter what he will always protect Khushi from all problems and evils, he could just not let her go.
