She recalled the fireflies he had brought for her on that ill-fated night when they had first got out of the kidnappers' clutches - as her eyes shut, she remembered the passion in his eyes that night - his entire being focused on her. They had been interrupted - no, she told herself, it was for the best. A man who could throw their contract at her like that - how could she give in to him and say that she considered him her husband?
She remembered that afternoon - after all this, what did he want after all? He said he loved her, he cared enough to throw that cheat of a man outside the house based on her word, but then after some of the most beautiful moments they had shared, after they had seemed closer than they had been in ages, he said he wished he hadn't met her. He had tried some kind of stunt to make her birthday special - she wished those lights were up now in the darkness! - but he didn't seem to be able to read her beyond a point. How could she be happy causing unhappiness to others? Didn't he realise? And what was that afternoon about? She could feel the tingly sensations going down her spine still - as he had held her closer, she had felt she could feel his heartbeat enjoined with hers... dhak dhak, dhak dhak...
Her thoughts were interrupted by the sound of the rain dropping down suddenly, and she was terrified again, her thoughts flying to her husband, driving down in this rain to Agra alone. Memories crowded her mind - of a horrific accident, of losing those she loved... of the man himself - the moments that they had shared, that he had tried to recreate in his own mad way that very afternoon - the smaller nok jhoks, the larger events...
She knew - if something happened to him, she would die a thousand deaths. He was not just her husband - he was Arnav Singh Raizada - the man she loved to hate, and hated to love - the man whose soul was intrinsically bound to hers. There was no way that anything could happen to him without her knowing - even when he was kidnapped, she had known. "Kuch nahi hoga unhe", she tried to console herself. "Hey Devi Maiyya, raksha karna", she prayed, closing her eyes once again, only for them to fly open in shock and horror as she heard the footsteps outside her room...
