I applaud you for making the effort to show a mirror to the face of a society which maintains a double standard when it comes to men and women... However, women are women's enemy. It's not men pointing a finger at Khushi (well, other than ASR, but then he is a jerk), it's women telling Khushi how her action was misinterpreted and it was not darling ASR's fault. Impure... the word itself screams of double standard... What is purity? Is it women wearing chastity belts manipulating people or woman having a healthy relationship and not harming anyone? Whom will you call pure? ASR never had any solid reason to point a finger at Khushi. Yet he is choosing to misinterpret... I wonder why? Is it because he'd rather believe her to be wrong and him to be magnanimous in loving a flawed person than accepting the fact that the mighty ASR is not only wrong but he has single handedly damaged the most precious relationship of his life to the point of no return?

This concept of purity is closely tied with religion and I believe it is used by men to control women. We do afterall still live in a male dominated world. That isnt so much an issue for me because I do recognize that they are the stronger sex biologically speaking but economically speaking it does become an issue when a woman gets paid less for the same job as a man (this too here in the US). First world country yay right.
What is purity you ask? Its different for everyone. One person might think a woman who hugs a married man is a s**t while another might not see anything wrong in that. I believe its a state of being...I believe its being able to look at yourself in the mirror and feeling content or even proud about yourself...not feeling disgust upon looking at your reflection. In some societies (the french) it is actually customary to greet with a kiss. So it depends on the society and person.

I'd like to make a few points here.

1. ASR was in a live-in relationship with La when he was this close to kissing Khushi on Diwali night. Promptly followed by his engagement announcement to La... In spite of that, he is considered having a character. So basically, according to some people, you only have to be faithful when one person puts his official stamp on someone, verbal commitment means nothing. A man is allowed to emotionally cheat a woman but a woman is not allowed to do so. That night ASR cheated La and Khushi within a matter of minutes.

2. When Khushi got engaged, ASR manhandled her like he has any right to do so when he was preparing for his own wedding. We were thrilled to watch his passion, but does he have a character or in any position to preach about it?

3. Shyam was married, but Khushi was not. So if Shyam hugs her, he should be called characterless, not Khushi. Yet, ASR bullies Khushi. Why? She is an orphan, powerless, a woman. Why not use your power on Shyam? Because he is man and your equal? As much as ASR looks hot when he is passionate, he is a bully. He is as manipulative as Shyam. The difference is their intentions. One is protecting his family, the other is aiming for something else. But bully nonetheless. And I have no respect for bullies.

4. After Khushi got married, ASR never saw her in Shyams arms, so the first logic does not apply anymore. If he can berate Khushi for her past relationships (which by the way is all in his head), then Khushi has a right to call him characterless for talking with La after marriage.

This is called double standard... Plain and simple...

A very good post, I am convinced with your explanation.I clearly see where you are coming from...As I said earlier, he was wrong from the beginning... for what all he did...and calling Khushi characterless is definitely a double standard...she deserved a benefit of doubt no mattre what he thinks or how much he is hurt. and I hope he realizes that in the future.
And still i dont think its just hugging Shyam is what he is concerned about, but the conversation they had also contributed to HIS(again HIS) thinking.which still doesnt make him right...

all Iam saying is, just physical intimacy or act of physical closeness doesn't make anyone impure, its thier intensions...a general statement

Glad to see that we are on the same page even though I am a modern feminist (not the bra burning kind nevertheless feminist). I just dont understand how in this day and age a WOMAN can be biased on this issue. How can a women say its ok for a man to hug other women but not for a woman to hug other men (I read through some of the comments here thus I am saying this). How can a woman not be in favor of their own sex, of their own self interest and be in favor of someone's else's interests?
women are women's worst enemies always. modern women, educated women also hold these views.
i get zapped when i read if asr is a virgin or not and khushi is always crucified for ltting shyam touch her even though she does not want it

For me I think he has sharing issues...by that I do not mean materialistic things...people whom he is emotionally attached to

He can't share his DI with anyone..though Anjali clings on to Shyam she has always given her CHOTTE lot of importance...

Same applies for Khushi...he is connected to her and he can't share her

He craves for her attention...he was never emotionally connected to LA

But if you go by just the word characterless...if khushi has no character for being hugged by Shyam then Arnav has lost his long back

Rima I don't it's hugging that makes him feel she is impure or anything.

I think if ASR saw Khushi hugging (in a romantic way) any other man ( who not married or linked to another woman), he would just be heartbroken...because he went to confess his feelings at that time.

So I guess it's not the hug...the fact he saw her with a married man is what bothered him.

i agree about his posessiveness. it is natural for any lover. but i love your last line. if she is impure he was long back

I agree about that. But the way he questioned her character and her upbringing was zapping from a man of th world who has been up to so much more.
but it was about the hug too. he said it. he said he can't erase the image. so how many images does khushi have in her mind of him and la. i agree it was his brother in law. but he contradicted himself by saying he hated her in another man's arms

Actually I don't think its the hug per se that makes ASR think Khushi is charactless... He calls her characterless for her affair with Shyam, her affair with a married man and her wanting to break his Di's marriage (which are of course his misconception)..
