What is it about Indian Serials?
I have always felt that a serial is not just made with the leads but with all the supporting characters that also include villains, sisters , uncles, aunts and the list goes on and on.
The problem with Indian television is that they start off a serial in a grand way introducing the characters and background stories big sets and everything and then somewhere along the line once the serial is established it becomes a trp game.
I am picky when it comes to serial and there are a few that I watch. For me it is not just the awww factor but also the anticipation factor that keeps me coming back to any serial then whether it be IPKKND, Geet, Sapno ke Bhanwar Mein or Vampires Diaries.
For example take Geet (and I am not bashing) but some of the back stories and characters never made it to the light. I don't know if the CV's forgot about them and they think we as the audience are stupid not to notice it. But some characters were never developed enough and some questions never answered. It was sad that a serial that could have been so much in the end amounted to nothing. The ending looked forced and it was just plain sad to see the way it end.
With IPKKND too the intial footage of the serial looked so grand and they set up this wonderful story line that kind of got me hooked. But lately as I have been watching I am just getting confused. No doubt there are some wonderful passionate scenes between the leads and supporting characters are doing a good job but the issue I have is the story. It seems to be going in circles for no reason. It is something like making the same dish but serving it a different bowl.
Though being an Indian I love dramas from all nationality. The one thing that bothers me about our dramas is maintaining the soul of the drama. If you wanted the drama to be intense or comedy or plain saas bahu you have to stick with the genre and not bend and twist it as per your whims and fancies and trp's.
I know a lot of people hate Shyam but at least he is playing his part of perfect slimy evil guy that we love to hate. My problem is with the leads nowadays who seem to loosing their essence of characters.
Take Khushi for instance she is supposed to be this happy, bubbly characters who loves her family. She takes decision with her heart and not head. She gets scared but doesn't let fear rule her and takes it on headlong. That what I love about her is her ability to face everything with a smile. She is not shown as super know it all women. But recent encounters she has been shown docile on many occasions. She will fight with Arnav but she let Shyam manhandle her and not say a word. I don't get that.
As far as Arnav goes too he too has some similarity like her. He loves his family but he thinks with his head not heart. But lately his head seem to take a vacation on times. He is supposed to be calculative so how does he allow Shyam to take advantage of the situation with his Di or his wife. He just stands there and does nothing. He had threated him to keep away and I think if anything Shyam has become more bold.
You start to wonder what is happening to them? What happened to characters we fell in love with? What happening to their tagline of love to hate and hate to love?
So when all is said and done will this serial also meet the same fate as other serials at the end of the day? Will it be only about how the episode fare on a daily basis and not worry about anything else? As much as I hate to say off lately that how have been feeling.
I have yet to see a serial that has been able to hold my interest till the end. I am hoping I could be proven wrong. But if not then all I can say maybe a change is due and hope it can come soon.
