Ditto! yor absolutly correct! Im not indian, however my roots are totally Desi, im neighbouring India, But Ive lived in the west all my life, and honestly, sometimes I feel im more desi and down to my roots than some people living in eastern countries, but still we are the ones that people are like "baar ki larki hai, isko kya pata hogaa,", or stuff like "baar ki hawaien lag gayee hoongee" and its like kinda opposite, doesnt apply to all, but from what ive seen, the west wants to stick to their roots, however the east is soo cought up in trying to become something of the west, they have totally disregarded their roots whilst living in them. Does not apply to all.

Completely agree with you!

Though I have seen shows in which a girl wearing westernised clothes, wasn't all that bad and characterless.

Dill Mill Gaye
Miley Jab Hum Tum
Kuch toh log kahenge
Kitani Mohabbat Hai

And probably some more as well. However, they are very limited.

I think the reason behind this is because the creatives use:

short dresses = more skin = bolder women = lower morals.

salwaar kameez = lesser skin = traditional Indian girl

I don't agree with this at all, and I would love to see a change come about.

However, another reason as to why they could be portraying this is because they don't want the now generation of India to forget a part of the Indian culture ---> suits, sarees, shawls, bindis, bangles, mehendi.

Also it's an indian soap opera...which is then highlighted by the Indian clothing. So if everyone started wearing Western Clothing, then a major essence of the beauty of India (India's women clothing) is going to be missing.

I have a couple of friends who are not indian, and they stumbled across this show in which women were wearing sarees and arguing about something (trust). Anyway, they loved the clothing, and they thought it was beautiful and elegant. So I guess that's why the creatives stick with making most females wear traditional clothes.

But I get your point, they should really have a female who proudly wears westernised clothes, and is not evil :D

I don't know what it is. I have stayed abroad for so many years, and I get more excited than my cousins (who live in India) to wear sarees and suits; and i sure as hell remember my values.

Also have you noticed that most male leads, that return from abroad are also shown as either:

a) good guy with the values intact
b) good guy at heart, but the values have disappeared.

Why is the male never shown to be a vamp returned from abroad? 😆

Sorry for the long reply 😳

Thank you Mary for saying this. I totally agree with you. I've always had this problem. Apparently according to these Indian serials if you wear pants or a skirt somehow you have no morals or you have bad ones. It's a wrong generalization.

PS: I have noticed that somehow this rule does not apply to Indian males who only wear western clothes. I wonder why? How come they are not characterless?

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

Omg i sooo agree with you!!! Im from England, born and bred here.. And i can clearly say westernerz do not dress the way they show on indian serials. I think they try and show them too be too modern whereas in real life even the most modernest people don't dress like that! im glad you made this post beacuse iv alwayz thought this! I think they should come to UK/America before stereotyping and showing what they supposedly think how we dress!

A thought provoking post. Its time the channel took some steps to stop this kind of stereotyped vision portrayed in the serials without any gall.

Hi Mary

its great to see you raise this. Since I came late to the show I was wondering why no one else had a problem with these linear equations

western clothes + short hair = brainless + characterless --- La!

Western upbringing = brainless

Umpteen Puja + lots of rituals = kindness and sweetness

as so many have pointed out, there are good people and ill manner people and it has v little to do with what you were or which country you were raised in. I have met plenty of young people from other cultures who are as wonderfully mannered and gracious as any from the best brought up families in India. And for me, though I am personally conservative in my relationships, I see no reason to judge someone who has physical relationships with anyone, as its entirely their personal life.

So glad that there are so many people in the forum raising this. I have not actually met too many people from other countries and cultures who are as overtly jinogistic about their own culture. I also dont understand this need to pan and put down other cultures to be able to glorify their own.. Not to get into the politics of things, there are enough scams in India to know that the glorious cultures has a few holes.

Its irritating and shows great insecurity when serials resort to such gimmicks. I would have been much much happier and more respectful if they had show La becoming a better human being without drawing a direct relationship wtih her clothes or had NK being a charming, fun, cute human being without showing him to be dumb

these preconceived notions or linear equations are certainly not true for most people in cities as many of you well know. However, TRP s are driven by a certain demographic and I suppose CV s in their effort to keep it up, do cater to the lowest common denominator. Its sad and a bit lazy as I believe that you can have avant garde ideas while drawing a wider audience but it needs great skill. Take the example of Udaan (an old serial in India) or any of Safdar Hashmi's works - excellent examples of breaking the stereotype while also catering to the larger audience.

I agree with this post 110%.
But I have realized that people in small cities/towns have same views of NRIs as what is being shown in these shows. I have been to India about 3 times and every time I go, I am not supposed to be wearing jeans etc since people in small towns don't like it (my ancestral home is in a small town). I guess, tv shows relate more to house wives or people in smaller towns, therefore they show us accordingly. But if media starts showing NRIs in a positive manner, I am sure people will think differently. But that is still a far fetched dream LOL. I will stick to wearing salwar kameez whenever I go to India.
