I am an NRI, been here most of my life. I look and talk "Western" and my morals are no less sound that Khushi's. In fact, I am more conservative than even Khushi. I would also not wear a short dress to a mandir, I have enough sense not to do that (like La is shown doing in the show). I wear short skirts, but I am also very proper about it.

What is this portrayal of NRI women by Indian actors? Why do they agree to do this? I have been to India and I have seen more women in salwars who are WAY more forward than me. Many have had more than one physical relationship. I am not judging them, but I am judged by many. Dressing a certain way does not tell you anything about a person's morals. Yet these shows always show the girls in short shirts as "character dhela." What the fish (😆as SRK would say)?

I am not saying Indian serials show reality, but at least they should be responsible not to increase stereotypes that already exist in the Indian subcontinent. Is that too much to ask?

Hey Mary hiya & thumbs up 4 ur post. Its not just serials but even Indian movies ve this stereotype. Wen the sanskari track started & Nani was taunting LA 4 not knowing how 2 cook i raised similar doubts. R all modern, educated, working, non-cooking women bad? But then in India sadly this mindset still exists. I ve seen this in my own marriage. So some things unfortunately never change. In fact u ll hardly find an Indian serial wer the heroine is a no-nonsense educated career woman. Its all only saas-bahu with stupid kitchen politics. Sometimes i feel all SP serials r extensions of the Master chef show.

Thanks for making the post. You know I'm more comfortable in jeans-T shirts and noone from my house ever deny to bought them for me and all say that I look prettier in them. My hairs are also short. But some days before I went to a village where a woman told me that as my parents have no son so they want to make and brought up me as a boy.
My parents always wanted a girl child but these words really hurted me.
But I can see that how many villagers have done cheap activites.[sorry not telling to all] So who gave them the right to judge my dressing sense? One should dress as they feel comfortable. And in television the same is happening. It need to be stopped soon.

Hi Mary!

You have raised a very valid point. In fact we've discussed this in the forum quite some time ago during those days when Nani would give La a hard time...

Unfortunately this is a stereotyped image that was earlier shown in Hindi movies and lately in serials.
Even NRI characters are shown weird, with even weirder accents!

In IPK itself they started showing La wearing mostly Salwar Kameezes from the time she turned positive.

Stereotypes exist everywhere, even in the west, and yes most certainly in the sub-continent. I myself have experienced many people in the west stereotype against women who are "loose" or "easy" based off their attire mainly, not to mention the extremely harsh stereotypes against women who are "conservative". In fact Hollywood movies/shows still portray smart, intelligent women one way, in business pantsuits, while the "sl*t" is always shown sporting a micro-mini and tube top. Bree Vandercamp and Eddie from Desperate Housewives anyone? How about Penny versus Amy Fowler in the Big Bang Theory? Or the ever popular Glee? Going a little further, the hotheaded woman is a redhead or Latina, the smart, hardworking one is black, and the airhead of course is always blond, blue eyed, and in a bikini. 😆 And, when the entire cast of Sex and the City visited the Middle East they were appalled too weren't they? Forget that the eastern women portrayed in that were shown as doormats simply because of their choice of clothing. 😉 I have women in the west feel surprise that I can speak English because I live in Pakistan, go into shock when I tell them I wear western clothes, and don't get stoned to death for not wearing a burqa... I don't take offense, but it is amusing.

And, it happens in Indian serials too. I don't approve of any of it, east or west. Because the underlying opinion is the same, that the airhead, the bimbo and the sl*t are very much in existence, and that the rest of us are all better than that, and dress a certain way, yet we all have lines which we draw, so we cannot be like "them." We don't wear this, or we don't do that, and we don't behave a certain way... Aren't we also stereotyping?

Simplifyinf my response to ridiculous level;

I think it predates to Colonial era when white skinned women with their gowns, skirts , their courtships, their affairs were considered indecent by the orthodox, conservative Indian Citizens .. despite education the impression persisted so much so that it became easier to show that a woman was amoral if she wore western outfits and was a good girl if she wore Indian wear ..without having to write special scenes for that express purpose..

hey..i live in india. i wear short dresses.i wear salwar suits(i wear whatever i want basically).
i live in a uni dorm too(so ample opportunity to do whatever i want)

so to summarize..im as western as any NRI and im as indian as ...amrita rao in vivah!:P

the stereo type u are talking about is only in serials and movies..i havent witnessed in real life(may be coz i live in a metropolitan city)

but dont take it to ur heart..its only for the dramatic effect.

p.s- the girls who wear salwar suits are not s**ts from inside.thats another stereotype that is being propagated here in this thread.plz dont do it. i love wearing indian clothes coz that is what i look my best in.:)

omg...i completely agree with what all of you said completely...that we westerners are totally shown character less and also as individuals who know nothing about our culture...and whats up with the weird accent...alot of us can speak our native tongue well...i am punjabi born and brought up in canada and can speak hindi, punjabi, and a little bit of urdu...so this stereotype that we cant speak the language irks me the most in these shows...how bout you folks...do you all concur????

Because Stars tag line is Rishta naya ,Sooch wahi...!! 😆

Indian or South asians when they come out of their country hold close everything indian and make their kids understand the culture, teach them values and respect their motherland. But at the same time, Indians at home continuously adapt to the changing modernism and tend to be more rebellious towards their culture.

Your issue is La was an NRI which nobody knew till the 1st breakup. There is always a stereotype shown in shows doesn't mean its true in all cases. Loud M-I-L, Meek D-I-L, Conniving S-I-L, Push over F-I-L, Ever supporting Husband, Blonde bimbos ,Dumb Sardarji, Tamilian speaking awful English and Hindi etc etc are all stereo types in the world of soaps. And there are many shows which doesn't have a westernized lady as a vamp. Consider seeing Rishta.com. It was fun to see a strong westernized female lead.

Doesn't really matter where you are born, raised, lived etc as long as you can distinguish between right and wrong.

I am by no means implying that women in Indian or other conservative attire are promiscuous. Whatever a woman is or does is her business. I am saying, not to judge by attire what a woman is and definitely not promote already existing stereotypes.
