Why is the Westernized girl always characterless?

This is my issue with all the Indian serials (not just this one), preaching to the Desi audiences that any girl who dresses in Western attire must always be characterless. I see this stereotype in real life too and it makes me sick.

I am an NRI, been here most of my life. I look and talk "Western" and my morals are no less sound that Khushi's. In fact, I am more conservative than even Khushi. I would also not wear a short dress to a mandir, I have enough sense not to do that (like La is shown doing in the show). I wear short skirts, but I am also very proper about it.

What is this portrayal of NRI women by Indian actors? Why do they agree to do this? I have been to India and I have seen more women in salwars who are WAY more forward than me. Many have had more than one physical relationship. I am not judging them, but I am judged by many. Dressing a certain way does not tell you anything about a person's morals. Yet these shows always show the girls in short shirts as "character dhela." What the fish (😆as SRK would say)?

I am not saying Indian serials show reality, but at least they should be responsible not to increase stereotypes that already exist in the Indian subcontinent. Is that too much to ask?

Thank you Canzasana. I am happy at least you replied and also some people "liked" it. If people could make this topic more popular by replying, it will get some awareness.

👏👏👏👏👏👏 Awesome post!
Agree with it completely and have thought of the same things you mentioned quite a few times-don't know why the hypocracy. If you show you are traditional by wearing Indian outfits you get away with murder but if you are traditional on the inside and wear westernized clothes yes your "character dheela, sl*t, etc... Not just saying it, have seen it happening! It's crazy!
It's irritating the way they portray Indian women in these TV shows and could go on and on not just about the dressing style but other things that women do is taken negatively but will stop here...
Analogy: Its like the snake is such a creep but he goes to the temple and so he is nice and ASR does not believe in God so if anything goes wrong he the bad one.

I agree with you 100% and Most of the time I feel we westerners have kept the culture more conservative then ppl living in India honestly.

Couldn't agree less with you! Sadly us NRI girls have to face all these stereotypes...and the entertainment industry only magnifies the stereotypes

👏Couldnt agree with you more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 👏
I am always disappointed the way they show modern/NRI women! 😡
I feel these characters are portrayed way to shallow.
And for me the worst is the be 'good ' they have to change into the typical indian atire/character..
to be honest i did not like the way the transformed la's character. Yeah, she was nice to Kushi but what is the sense in copying her style and her way to speak ??? But it was to easy... A persone doesnt change so fast...

why is it so hard to write about a modern female character with depth, without saying being western is a wrong thing ????????????????
I guess we have to wait for an other century for that to happend...😒

a very very good post!!!

i completely agree with u!! and i find it utterly absurd that people think that every girl who wears short dresses has a loose character!!!

i am also born and brought up in a european country and i do wear short skirts and dresses but i must say that i am far more conservative than some girls in india who seem to be 'decent' and roam around fully clothed!!

short skirt, short dress - loose character

fully covered up, salwar - oh good 'traditional' girl

it is such a prejudice!!! i can puke

Great post

I couldn't agree with you more..the westernized girl is always shown as some airhead in these serials, whereas in real life its whats in your heart, what you believe, not the clothes you wear.
