As we are so fond of comparing Arnav to every literary character known...why not compare him to Devdas...as well Both are self destructive...
Both want the love of their life more than their lives...but both do nothing to go out and get her...
Both love to do things that hurt them even more
Both love with passion...and feel the pain with as much intensity
Both are rich and have a good social status
Both fall in love with girls who are of much less social status than theirs
Both brood and sulk
Image Detail
I hope this is where the similarity ends...
Hopefully Shyam will be the cause to save arnav from his self destruction!!

Hey Sush!

You know, Somzz and I were discussing the same thing a couple days ago.
About Arnav becoming like Devdas.

The devastation on his face after hearing about Khushi's engagement reminded very much of Devdas.

And you presented a good summary of similarities between Arnie and D. 👏

The thing is that here no one but Arnav himself is hampering his own release from darkness.

Devdas did what he did...or rather did not do what he was supposed to do, because of his father's wishes (at least that's what I remember from the movie).

I sincerely hope that Arnav comes out of the dark haze he is rapidly retreating into!
Going by the spoilers the hasty/hate marriage track seems the only way he will be propelled out into love and light!
Ultimately he has to come to terms with the new reality in his life - Khushi matters more to him than his ego. Except, even then his life will not be a bed of roses - his own sister's happiness will challenge his own happiness.

HI Sush !

good comparison but I really hope Arnav doesn't turn to alcohol !! 😆

He needs realize that Khushi is far more 'nashili' than any other drink !! 😉

Hi Shwets...Yes...this is a totally self inflicted wound at this point... So far...he really does not even have a solid reason to hate Khushi...but he is running away like crazy...Just because of an abstract idea? Khushi could have been getting married to Joe blow for all he knows...but he is getting engaged to get back to her...?
He does not even have a dominating father who is telling him what to do...He is powerful, man of his will, rich, making his own decisions, most eligible bachelor, King of his household...where no one can tell him what to do, king of his business, and all that...and he is choosing to destroy the love of his life...purely by his own will...

Nice try Sush...but no...definitely not working!

THe other thing is, at the time that Devdas was set, social caste was extremely important not to mention family honour and wealth, especially the inherited variety...in today's Delhi, I don't think it has the same degree/intensity of importance, especially for a self-made man

Sush - good and different post . Devdas is one of the most popular character of Indian Literature thanks to repeated filming of it . I read it long time ago in orginal so do not remember it very well.
By the way my profile pic is of Suchitra Sen in the role of Paro in 1950s Devdas 😃
ASR has no external factors affecting his decisions . It is all his internal conflict with himself . Due to some reason which Cvs have not revealed it , may be due to his fathers affair with another woman , he had witnessed demise of his won parents and family . May be something else . Whatever the reason - he has decided - that he would never fall in love, he would never let any woman rule his heart . But alas ! Little did he know that falling in love is something - noone can control . So now the more he wants to run away from love, the more it is chasing him up close. Then , is the self destruction they only way he can fight it ?
That would happen if he goes and actually marries LA . I am sure in that case he would turn to alcohol and eventual self destruction
But I hope the CVS will realize Arhi marriage and gradually Khushi will show him why is hewrong . May be she would help him to understand his father.
If Arnavs USP if passion then KHushi's USP is mental strength .
I am looking forward to watch how Khushi will channel all Arnavs passion in right direction .

On a serious note,

you are right. there are similarities but there are contrasts as well.

ASR is a self-made man, Devdas wasn't.

Devdas had a dominating father, ASR makes his own decisions.

Devdas couldn't accept his love because he wasn't brave enough to stand up against his family and society. ASR can't accept his love because of his own pride, ego and fears.

Yeah someone (Read Snake)... Please save ASR from himself! He needs this Snake intervention to stop him from making a HUGE mistake by marying La and instead will force him to give Khushi a place in his life! A place he ALREADY wants to BADLY give her!
So lets hope he is forced to get married to Khushi...THEN he can stew in his self destructive anger etc for sometime till he has to inevitably give into LOVE!
Great post BTW Shush!

Hey Fari!

That's exactly what I think too.

Only Khushi's love and understanding can help him overcome his fears and pain.
But for that, Arnav has to let her in, let her love in...
Its all a big circle getting more complicated with every new event!
And now only Arnav can break that circle.
