Till two decades back (or even one and a half decade back) even a grey male lead was not acceptable, the male lead should have been someone like Ramji and if he wasn't he was called names, slowly the trend started changing and a few grey male leads did make their appearance and people began to accept them but for them huge redemption track was needed, slowly the amount of redemption decreased and "bad became the new good" now no longer did one need to repent his actions, just be nice afterwards, but this was only for the males the females couldn't be anything less than Savitri, I think I had read somewhere that in the first largest running Ekta show, the heroine of the second generation was married to the villain who mentally tortured her daily, still there were people wanting him to change and become the lead, it was fortunately that hero for the current generation was her real life husband with whom her pair was considered to be the biggest hit (probably the first TV favorite Jodi for long time)and so they could show that they divorced and the hero heroine did marry

Anyhow now the trend is further changing and we have heroines like Maya, Durga, Nandani (who no longer is) who are selfish and can go to any level to reach their desire, then we have girls like Anokhi, Lakshmi (main Lakshmi tere aangan ki), who love money and want to marry for money for which they can do anything, even break the alliance of their rich target (not including Roshni of Panch- although I think in this case people loved Gauri the antagonist more than Roshni, anyhow, or Kiya of TBP as discussion is on GEC)

The point I want to make is that slowly people are accepting the grey characters, while earlier the hero/heroine needed to be the purest soul possible on the earth, now people are accepting grey leads, people who are humans like us, yes I agree that the acceptance for grey males happened sooner than that for the females, probably that had to do with out cultural mindset of "Poot kapoot sune hain par na maata suni kumaata" but even that has started now, and yes I agree that it is slow process but soon the grey FLs would become as acceptable as the grey MLs

Agree n nw ppl are accepting it smewhat too!beyhadd is biggest eg ppl love maya more than sweet sa saanj n durga she was d best grey shaded heroine n then meera(sns gopi's daughter who mrd her sisters fil lol) n many more its jus matter of time ppl will accept grey fl too:D

I think it is because people have this mindset about females. They need to be good, always think of others, selfless, sacrificing etc. Mahaan and Savitri et all. They cant be seen to think of themselves because only "Vamps" do that. So they introduce a vamp or vamps and FL or FL's need to be a foil for them. They need to have showdowns with the Vamps and tell them how bad they are and how they will fail etc. (I have seen it on many shows and every time I die of boredom watching the same thing). This PH especially in their last show went overboard with this Vamp Vs FL stuff. It got so repetitive in the end, we know what they will say before they open their mouth. But sadly the Vamp looked more interesting than the FL. (Never a good thing).

But now the trend is changing a bit with characters like Maya in Beyhadh whom people love. She is not a good girl she is a go getter. Very stylish, succesful and in control. But she has a broken and vulnerable side too, and maybe THAT is why people relate to her. It was high time a woman like her was shown on Indian TV. Because since I started to watch Indian shows I never saw a FL quite like her. I also liked Seher in QH too. I felt they justified her to a great extent. But people bashed her a lot. I think people are still not fully ready for it. But I think if a man can be shown bad, then so can a woman. If a man can "Change", then so can a woman! Why is it that a man who starts off bad, can end up good and it is accepted, but a woman has to Start and End good? That is not needed. What we need are women who are also not perfect, and even in the end they are not, but they also change for the better!

High time FL's are accepted as grey characters and not have this mindset that any FL has to be above reproach in every way and if she is not, then ML needs to get someone "Different?". Do we say the same for every badly behaved Male lead too? So why think that way of Female leads? Time to change the trend. Because in Western shows you get lots of grey women and men and they are equally loved most of the time. Especially if they are redemeed. It doesnt matter if they are male or female. We are all human, and all humas have the same failings and strengths. No gender bias is needed.

For some reason i can never hate Tia, and partly the reason is her being Diya in Miley jab hum tum. Even there she was potrayed as a grey character but i loved her, because she was relatable and now, yes she does loads of high voltage drama and planning and plotting but i can't hate her and whenever she cries thinking of Robin my heart shouts out for her.
And probably you have nt seen D3. Everyone admired Sharon. Her being the not so goody girl she was made people fall for her :)

I completely agree. It's terribly sad how we're willing to accept a completely psychopathic, sadistic, and masochist male leads with ease, but when a female lead shows even the slightest shades of grey, WOOAAHH BRO, dicth her, she isn't worth our "perfect" male lead.
Not only is this insanely annoying to watch, but to think of how this influences the Indian society, by spreading the message that faults of the guys are acceptable, but females must be epitome of everything perfect and pure.

i think the PH's is to b blamed... for years thy r serving shit in the name of drama...nd according to their dumb logic people wont accept grey FL toh yaar negative lead mat dikhao STRONG LEAD dikhao an example to this point is kashaf murtuza from ZGH she's not grey/negative but she had a five letter thingee that most tv charactera (including anikaa) miss S-P-I-N-E before maiyya started her saas-bahu shit she was a producer of a succesful show called "itihaas" which got her the soap queen tag.. the irony is unlike her latter shows like kyunki,KAhanii itihaas had a grey female lead who was loved by people.. im not sure who these trp aunties are but my mom nd her gang roots. for a fatmagul, feriha rather than gopi or simar... they are loving maya,nd they are waiting for nadya to grace their screens from monday...

In Kyuki when Tulsi got to know that her husband had an affair with other woman, she broke all her relations with him, when her mother in law got to know about this she threw her own son out of the house, when Nandani's husband started mentally torturing her, she made no attempt to reconcile with him rather immediately decided to move out of the house, (n it was only mental torture he had not physically abused her by then n also she had married him by choice) n against her parents will she applied for divorce, later when her husband forced himself on to her she got pregnant but then she didn't weep like typical bahus rather went to abort that child, when Tusli got to know what his son had been doing to Nandani's, she shooted him herself thereby killing her own son, what makes you feel that these women had no spine?, All the three ladies I mentioned we the leads of their respective generations

The woman then had much more spine than now, I don't know who people call Ekta regressive n others progressive

Exactly kyunki was not regressive show. It was saas bahu where everyone had their own issues to solve. Won't run for one person to solve.
Kahin toh hoga, kyunki and kahani, such Femake oriented shows that time were not regressive and FL was not grey.
That was golden era of TV.
Later all regressive doormat FL or super melodrama mahan FL shows came that torturing viewers.
Slowly with Ek hasina, behydadh some relief sometime

I agree Kinny the woman in those shows were not grey but weren't doormat either they were the ones who stood for themselves and for what they felt was right not thinking about Sindoor or Mangalsootra
They might have been traditional in clothes but modern in their thinking unlike heroines of today who are modern only in clothes
Although I wouldn't say that was the folder era as before that we had shows like Tara Kitty party etc where the woman of today's era were shown who lived the lives on their terms
