Women empowerment doesn't mean modern clothes or working women only. It's respecting a woman choice, her decision. It's a woman choice to be a house wife and take care of family other than office or to be a working woman to take care of office. Either way, women would be independent to take decisions and stand for right , be it family matters or office.
Those old age TV of ekta only showed women empowerment. Now it's just degrading that women empowerment itself.

I don't know how progressive or regressive kyunki and kahaani's female characters were...they do sound comparatively more progressive than today's leads...but kashaf murtaza man...here is a character who was not "happy" or "bubbly" or "optimistic"...she was annoyingly pessimistic, such complexes she had...those made her so real,so understandable...why can't indians make shows like this?...our FLs have to be bubbly and optimistic and people pleasing no matter what...

Like Mandy said it's the deep rooted mentality in us which don't let us enjoy a girl who is hatke from normal girl. For ex in our real lives if a girl hang out with boys or a bit loud, is not feminine enough she will be called ladka, Tom boy and people around her will ask her questions like tum ladkiyon ki tarha kyu behave Karti ho? I had this annoying thing my whole life🐷 dunno what exactly is required to be a girl. I have the body bae.😆
So same thing is expected on tv. Girls from childhood only has one dream, prince charming. Education and job? What shit? And then pati Seva mil Seva. No matter how Dbag is pati or absolute chudail is saas, saas maa Saman no? And then you don't take divorce if it's horrible, kyuki Doli PE aao arthi PE Jao. And yes grey FLs are coming, but how much trp they are fetching? How many people liking it? Don't we have the unnecessary complaints wrt that character? Internal misogyny and deep rooted hypocrisy is the reason we are not getting changes. The section which wants is seeking different content online. India is not ready for tv revolution, especially on FLs genre. Maybe that's why we are stuck with same ol' shows, just title and channels are diff, after a point they all blur.

Yes grey-negative female leads are accepted but it's in minority. A number of people accepts such female leads as long as they don't hurt d hero for their selfishness or revenge & d day they do it then they r called names. A hero hurting herine for 500 episodes is seen as normal but if a heroine even hurts d hero for a single episode then d hero sud get another heroine. D heroine of SP's 5:30 slot is neither grey nor negative but she is not selfless too as she loves her true love even after her marriage wid another man as mentioned in my post but d fans of d actor playing her husband calls her disgusting n giving lectures of holy marriage n all just cuz she did not moved on 4m her lover n started loving her husband. I wonder wat was those fans do if their favourite played d role of heroine's lover instead of her husband. But fortunately she n her lover has more fans than her haters. Ekta's earlier serials may be nice but I think people r judging d heroine's by their heavy clothes n jewelleries n not being working women. But if some people here like Preet & kinny are saying those women as progressive then I will agree. But many of recent Ekta's shows heroines r really mahaan unlike earlier. But in her historical show 2 years ago, d empress gives d emperor a hard time before forgiving him wen he misunderstood her for meeting a paraaya mard who was actually her cousin brother. D emperor goes to her house n begs a lot for days n even pretending to be dead to attract her to him only to be rebuked by her for faking his death. He returns sadly to his house wid her returning to him nearly a week later. Dis thing happened in 16th century period. But in 21st century shows, d heroes are forgiven even without any redemption with d exception of d show Beintehaa.

I agree to your point Juhi but I want to say that when I was a kid ( I guess you weren't even born then)we had shows like Shaanti, where the heroine was not white she was working for Revenge
Doordarshan shows like Humlog n Idhar Udhar(the Favorite show of our parents generation) portrayed working women who were not grey for sure but were very much girls who thought of themselves n were not even near being selfless

Idhar Udhar had girls who stayed in a rented apartment in Bombay subletting the flat to a guy to share rent and so that they could make him do all the household work while Majhli of Humlog left her house since her parents weren't willing to let her do the job of her choice and these shows were loved by our parents generation (aired around 84-86) I think these so called TRP aunties are of that generation right? If those were their Favorite serials then I don't believe that they won't accept a grey heroine rather it is the people of our generation (age less than 32) who are more regressive in their thoughts and want such heroines who are mahaan n selfless, I think high time we shall stop blaming such regressive shows as a result of TRP aunties choice

Although I don't consider my mom as a TRP audience as she always loved suspense thriller n murder mysteries n not soft romance, (she retired from her job last year n so you can imagine her age n so her supposed regressive thought), I had asked her to watch In n she started it n also liked it, but the day of the forced marriage of Shivika she got so angry that she called me asking to quit watching the show immediately (which I had done myself post that) starting that such tracks affect the mind n make females lose their self esteem

thank you for sharing your mother's pov...I hate the condescension with which the older generation is talked about and generalized here by the internet audience which by the way likes manhandling heroes shows after shows...at the same time it couldn't be that nobody from that generation is part of the trp audience, right?

I will accept a well written grey female lead over a perfect one. There was this show called "Mere qatil Mere dildar", where the tortured female lead takes revenge from her spineless husband and lecher jeth. Also ZGH Kashaf I could at time relate to myself.
The only FL of Indian tv I liked were Piya from PKYEK and Ragini from Bidaai and I some what like Annika.

Main problem with Ishana was not because she was a con artist but it was her back story trying to make her look some bechari.

No I am not saying that no one in that generation is a TRP audience rather I am saying that TRP audience do not necessarily like regressive tracks, or else Shaanti, Humlog n Idhar Udhar wouldn't have been cult and iconic shows

but that was sooo many years back...people watching indian tv shows now have definitely different tastes...a look at the trp list and which shows are hit/flop makes this clear.

Hmm so that means that the people who are not liking such progressive women are not those of old age but those born post 84 so I said less than 32 years of age
