Hmm. Quite a profound question that you posed here. Have to delve into our own convictions, worldview and beliefs to answer this one...without coming off as a hypocrite 😃
Personally...I think Shivaay was right to be livid at the fact that such vital information was concealed from them. He also said something to the effect of how things wouldn't have gotten so out of hand if this information had been given to them in the first place. The Chabbras should have said this to them...the way Mr. Chabbra calmly swept it under the carpet is not done. Everyone knows that in marriage.. transparency is best. And of course...this fact mattered and it could have potentially derailed the alliance...and the Chabbras knew it. Hiding it was not right.
But what irked me was the way Shivaay handled it. Bulldozing his way around the entire business. Lacking any delicacy whatsoever. Because you have to agree that in such matters while breaking an alliance usually elders are much more delicate...careful to use euphemisms. Youngsters are seldom allowed to handle such situations. Elders usually say things in a way that doesn't end up hurting the prospective groom or bride. But he used the word najayaz...basically threw them out of the house. The way he did it made his stance wrong.
Of course we all judge people based on all the criteria you mentioned. Arranged marriages in India happen on the basis of ticking off items on a checklist. Some of the most important being...caste, education, family background, looks...so many other things. Let's not deny this. You are totally right about this.
But there are times when even after ticking off these items...things don't turn out to be the way we expect them to. I feel that we should evolve to a state where two people meet...over a course of time understand each other, strike up a common wavelength...and then decide to get hitched.
And I think Shivaay is wrong in that he judges a person solely on the basis of their lineage. Say he'd chosen Rihan for Priyanka...who dumped a girl casually. Lineage is not always a marker of good character. Between the two brothers...Dev is the good one.
And the fact that he chooses to overlook a person's merits and solely focuses on where they come from is wrong too. Quite often...people transcend their circumstances and evolve into something better. We should give them a chance to prove themselves and not shut ourselves off to the possibility of betterment or judge merely on the basis of first impressions. That is an indication of stagnation...which is neither good for individuals nor for societal progress.
Sorry for the long post...have tried to answer as sincerely and truthfully as possible.
