Soul shattering update

Part 7

After the family feast, Shivaay decided to show Anika her second gift, the nursery. Thanks to Omkara and Rudra, he had built the perfect nursery from scratch. He hoped Anika liked it and if she wanted any changes, then he would gladly do it. He was nervous to show her though and Anika sensed it.

"Are you ok Shiv?" she asked, keeping her hand on his shoulder.

He jumped but nodded " Yeah of course" he smiled and took her hand in his.

"Actually, I have another surprise for you?"

"Oh Billu ji, did you buy another star... you.."

"No. no. Something else. A bigger surprise, better" he winked.

"The moon?" she asked, exasperated.

"What? No. I would if it was for sale but... Oh god Anika, we are going off track"

"Then what is it?"

"It wouldn't be a surprise if I told you" he said cheekily and went to get something. She was excited. He returned with his hands behind his back.

"Turn around and close your eyes" she did without complaining and he blindfolded her. She gasped and touched the cloth.

"Shiv"

"I'm right here" he held her hand. "See?.. come with me" he guided her carefully.

"Stand here, don't move, I'll be back in 2 seconds" he left her and went to turn on the lights.

"Shiv"

"Okay ready!" he went behind her and took off the blindfold. Her eyes were still closed and he whispered in her ear "Open your eyes".

Anika opened her eyes and her heart stopped. She stared in awe as she tried to take it all in. The walls were painted a lovely green that gave the room a very calm and relaxed feeling. The bright white crib made such a beautiful contrast against the walls, and Anika smiled as she realised the furniture had been picked out by her unknowingly.

The wall behind the crib had a long rainbow at the top and a sun in the corner. There were different types of cartoons mixed at the bottom of all 4 walls. On the opposite wall of the crib, there was a white rocking chair. A sampling of children's dolls and stuffed animals covered most of the floor. Built-in bookcases already filled with books and more toys, pictures of her and Shivaay when they were little. Her uncontrollable tears made their way down her cheeks as she sniffled. Her hormones were getting the best of her.

"What do you think?" Shivaay asked quietly from behind her.

Looking over her shoulder, she smiled through her tears. "It's absolutely perfect. I can't believe you did all of this, that you even had the vision for something like this. I'm.. I'm blown away"

He smiled shyly. "So then you like it" he said, for clarification.

Anika nodded and wrapped her arms around him. "It's perfect! Our baby is very lucky to have such a talented dad"

Shivaay held on tight, enjoying the feel of her in his arms. "I can't take all the credit. Om and Rudra helped a lot. And of course you helped too"

"See? The baby is triple lucky. This room has the essence of everyone. Looking at the drawings, I know Om did them, and I know Rudra tricked me now, that's okay though. I love it"

"We will do the next room together"

"Next room?" she asked, confusion marking her face.

"Yes, for baby number 2" he winked and she hit him lightly.

"Atleast let this one come first" she stepped out of the circle of his arms.

"Bhabhi" Rudra joined them with Omkara. Anika turned and looked at them happily. She went to hug them. "Thank you so much. This room is beautiful but more than that, it's filled with love. Thanks Om, thanks Rudra" she kissed each of their cheeks and Shivaay admired his wife and brothers.

"It was our pleasure. We had a lot of fun doing it for our niece or nephew" Om replied and patted her head.

"It will be a boy, bhabhi. My nephew will be like me. I will feed him protein shake" Rudra replied, dreaming how he will train his nephew and make him a body builder.

"No way! It will be a girl". Shivaay replied, glaring at Rudra.

"No bhaiya, boy!"

"I said girl. Nobody refuses Shivaay Singh Oberoi" he said

"Oh Billu ji. God isn't going to go according to you" she huffed.

"Exactly" Om said and high fived Anika.

"And anyway, I know it's a boy" Anika poked her tongue out at Shivaay.

"And how would you know?" he asked, frowning.

"What do you mean how? He is inside me so of course I know. Huh kuch bhi.. Logic"

"How is that logic? You can't just assume..."

"Yes, I can..."

"No"

"Yes"

"Billu ji"

"Don't call me that"

Omkara and Rudra quietly stepped out of the nursery so they don't get stuck in another world war. They will never change, they find reasons to fight for. Smiling at each other, they shook their heads.

...

Next day...

Anika had an appointment at the hospital and she was getting ready. Shivaay was waiting for her.

"Girls! They take so long to get ready"

"What did you say" She walked in the room in time and heard his comment.

"We are not going to someone's wedding, why are you taking so long?" She screwed him with her eyes and turned around.

"Im not going with you. I will go with Om or Rudra" she said and walked out of the room.

"Fhat the Wuck?!?" he followed her.

Anika saw him following her, she laughed and walked a bit faster, well as fast as she could anyway, and lost her footing. She screamed in horror and held onto her stomach to protect it. Shivaay saw her slipping and nearly had a heart attack. He ran, as fast as he could, his life flashing in front of him as he reached her and pulled her to him. They lost their footing and Anika fell on Shivaay. She moaned in pain and clutched his collar. Fear tickled his spine as he checked her.

"Are you ok? Are you hurt? Anika answer me"

"Shiv.. the baby.. painful.." she gasped, her voice low.

Shivaay panicked and tried to get her up but she was frozen in fear. Om and Rudra came running as they had heard her scream.

"Anika! Shivay!" Om exclaimed and they both helped them up.

"She's hurt I think. We need to go hospital" Shivaay said, not taking his eyes off Anika who had closed her eyes now but she was sweating and breathing hard.

"What happened?" Rudra asked, panicking.

"I will tell everything on the way, let's take her" Shivaay said as he picked her up and they made their way to the hospital. He told his brothers what happened in the car and they were worried.

...

Shivaay didn't agree to let Anika go through check up alone so he was sitting in the consultation room while Anika was with her doctor behind the curtain. She had lost consciousness on the way and he was worried. His brothers were outside waiting and they had already informed the family who were now on the way.

A few minutes later, the doctor called out for him. Nervously, he joined them. Anika was laying down on the bed and the doctor was getting the sonography machine ready.

"There's nothing to worry about Mr Oberoi" she smiled gently at him.

"Good you brought her on time. I have checked her and she seems fine. Would you like to hear your baby's heartbeat?" she asked.

Relieved, he finally released the breath he didn't know he was holding. He looked at Anika who looked tired but awake. "Yes" he whispered as he took Anika's hand and held on.

She smeared the gel on Anika's belly and started the process. Shivaay and Anika's eyes were stuck on the machine. This was the first time they would see their baby together. Shivaay's heart were beating so fast, he could hear it but then realised it wasn't his. And Anika's gasp confirmed it.

My baby

His hand started shaking, his breathing erratic. It was as if his heart beat and his baby's were in sync, he couldn't make out the difference between the two. Anika squeezed his shaking hands and he looked down at her. She was crying but it was tears of joy.

"That is your baby's heartbeat. Sounds good and strong" the doctor said and then got a funny look on her face. Shivaay started to panic. "Is something wrong doctor?"

She patted his hand. "Not a thing, Mr Oberoi. Your wife is doing great. I just want to check something on the ultrasound" she turned to Anika and smiled. "We should get a better idea of your exact due date with it too. She moved the stick around and while she did, she began pointing out things to them. "See here, this is your baby's head, the legs, see the heart beating there?" Shivaay and Anika were engrossed in the image. It was so beautiful. "Hmm looks like your are about 5 months along. Ah here's the reason why you may be feeling some strong movements and kicks, there's not much room for maneuvering in there, with baby number two taking up extra space. Let me see..."

Shivaay and Anika froze. "Did you say baby number two? I think I heard you wrong. Repeat that please" Anika started to panic. "You said something else, right, and I misheard you"

Dr. Asha smiled. "Nope, you heard me right. Looks like you're carrying twins. I thought I heard a second heartbeat earlier, and this confirms it. Baby number 1 looks like a boy. I'm trying to get a clearer picture of Baby number 2, but it's kind of hiding behind baby 1"

"Twins!" Shivaay squeaked. He looked at Anika, who had a huge grin on her face. "I can't have twins. No, only one baby at a time, thank you very much. Check again doc. This is a joke right? Anika, tell her,only one baby allowed at one time" Shivaay was heading for a full force panic.

Anika grinned wider. "Oh Shiv! We are having twins!"

Just then Dr. Asha said, "Or triplets for that matter." Shivaay mouth flopped open, closed, opened and he nearly fainted when the doctor laughed. "I'm just teasing you. There's only 2. And I'm not going to be able to see baby 2. It's in hiding and won't come out to play." she laughed and turned to Anika. "Let's get you cleaned up. I'll print some pictures of your babies to take home. Knowing it's twins, I want to get a few tests set up for you. It changes things a little, but not much"

"It changes a lot of things. We can't have two. I just built a room for one. What will I do with two?" He knew he was in shock. He felt numb. "Sorry doc, take it back, check again. Do something, there can't be two babies in there."

They laughed at him. They had the nerve to laugh. "Don't worry Mr Oberoi, It will be fine, great in fact" his head was spinning.

...

Shivaay and Anika walked out the consultation room to find all the Oberoi's waiting in the corridor. Shivaay was still numb and Anika waddled to dadi and hugged her. Om and Rudra looked at Shivaay weirdly and turned to Anika.

"What happened to him?" Om asked.

"He is in shock" She laughed and took out the sonography pictures out of the envelop.

"Why?" Rudra and Dadi asked.

"Because we are having twins!" she said happily and showed them the pictures.

"What?!" the whole family went in shock for a split second before they rejoiced happily and hugged Anika and Shivaay. Who was still in a trance.

"Bhaiya, now we can have a girl and a boy!" Rudra was over the moon.

"Arre haan, one is a boy but baby number 2 is hiding so don't know yet" she said, looking at the picture closely.

"Billu, tu theek to hain na?" Dadi asked, breaking his thoughts. He looked at her and smiled.

"Yeah"

...

2 Months later...

Shivaay was now more excited for his babies than Anika. It was like they had a role reversal. As if a clarity descended over him and he was jumping. He had quickly rejected the idea or making another room and decided he won't separate the twins and they would share the nursery. Him, Om and Rudra had then gone shopping again to get another crib and closet. They re-arranged the room so both cribs were next to each other.

However, Anika were a little scared now. She had been excited when she found out but the more she thought about it she more scared she was. How would she give birth to two babies in one day? Granted, a lot of women do it but she was terrified. She was standing in front of the mirror, sideways, checking her bump.

"I have grown as big as a house while they act like my belly is their own personal playground. i can't walk, I can't sleep and I will have to give birth twice" she shuddered, thinking about it. "There will be 2 of them crying at the same, feed them both at once, satisfy both their dreams, buy 2 of everything, pay for 2 colleges, get them married... " she was hyperventilating.

"You think too much" Shivaay hugged her from the back, startling her.

She frowned and he kissed her cheeks "You look beautiful" he turned her to face him.

"Don't lie"

"I'm not. You are the most beautiful woman I have ever seen. Our babies' mummy looks yummy" he joked and she chuckled hitting him.

"I'm scared Shiv" she said, getting in a serious mood.

"I know but..."

"Can't you do it?" she whined.

"Do what?" he was confused.

"Give birth Shiv, what else?"

"What?"

"Yes, you give birth for me please."

"Anika, if it was possible then I would have jaan" he hugged her.

"Not fair"

"I know"

...

2 a.m

"Shiv" Anika rocked him in his sleep. "Wake up!" she yelled. "Billu!!!!" Shivaay jumped up and looked around. He sighed when he didn't find an intruder in his room. He turned to Anika, eyes still filled with sleep.

"Kya hua? Are you ok?"

"I'm hungry" she made a sad face.

"Okay, let's go kitchen. There are still food from last..."

"NO!" she crossed her hands. "I don't want that" he was fully awake now.

"What do you want then?"

"I really want Kulfi. Mango kulfi, please" she begged.

"Kulfi? Where will I find Kulfi at this time Anika? Everywhere is closed" Shivaay has been dealing with this for the past few months now. She had the weirdest craving at the oddest time. Once she had made him cook Gajar ka halwa but ended up sleeping by the time it was done.

And then there was the time when she wanted to eat paani puri, at 4 a.m. Who eats paani puri at that time? Apparently Anika!. As he doesn't let her have roadside food because he's a hygiene freak, he ended up making it himself, following online recipe. It was all worth it when she ate it though. She had kissed him so passionately.

And then there was the time when she wanted fresh mango. From the tree. He had to go find a mango tree and steal one. Him! The Shivaay Singh Oberoi had to steal a mango, because his wife's cravings were scary. Om and Rudra had laughed at him till they fell on the floor.

And whenever he tried to say no, she emotionally blackmailed him saying he didn't love her or the babies. He knew he couldn't refuse her.

"I don't know Shivaay. A shop must be open somewhere" she said, tears threatening to fall.

"But..." He said but stopped when he saw her lips began to wobble.

"You don't love me anymore Shiv! You don't love our babies." she accused and looked down at her belly. "See babies, papa doesn't love us" she continued.

"Hey! don't say that to them, they can hear" Jheez she scared him sometimes.

"Fine, I will go and look for mango kulfi" he said, sighing. There was no winning with her.

"Yay! Thank you" tears long gone, a happy smile replacing it. Her mood swings would kill him one day.
