IKRS Tuesday 26th April 2016 ep 229 My Take ~ Matriarch, swings the pendulum!
It may seem we live in a patriarchal society where the male gender appears to be in control of the hub of life. However throughout history along the ages we have seen societies ,civilizations where a matriarchal woman has been at the helm of affairs . Cleopatra , Elizabeth 1, Rani of Jhansi, Razia Sultana.. are but a few that spring to my mind. Basically a matriarch can be any woman who is recognized as the head of a family , community or peoples.. a woman who holds a position of dominance , authority and respect.. yes in keeping the episode in mind, dadi Bua comes to mind. An old order is changing giving place to a new order.. the patriarch Dashrant is booted out on grounds of grave in competence and low moral standing. His sister a strong matriarchal figure is all set to rule!
Seeing that the jinxed nurse has gone, it calls for the whole house where ever she set foot upon to be cleansed and purified! So commanded Bua and Kanak is only pleased to carry out the symbolical act of getting rid of the jinxed Dhani forever! Bau gives her reason for this clean up its to announce something pious and shortly Kamini bedecked in a red sari is summoned and sat down on the settee as if she is something special. Viplav is called for, he was late . Viplav does come.. but not alone, hand in hand he brings beside him the nurse who had gone !the joined hands is statement enough. Dhani is sheepish she lowers her eyes but Viplav looks boldly at all his family .He has done nothing wrong and is not ashamed to declare the truth now. One sided look at Dhani to assure her it's their home they set foot in , both cross over the threshold. Its Bua who pulls the shots no way is this filthy wretch going to set foot in this house!for all to see Viplav's palm loosens to interlock his fingers with Dhani's fingers to show a reverent defiance! Bua is astounded it's that grip she is questions? She needs answers! Thus the inquisition begins , what relation does he have with her? to answer both him and Dhani reach for Bua's feet.. but Dashrant still hopes Viplav will abstain from telling it as it is! Kanak too glares at Dhani .. she let her down.. but Viplav holds his head up high and says dadi Bua his relationship with Dhani is that of love and trust! The bond of a husband and wife . Bau s puja thalli crashes to the floor and then Dhani moves to Bua, to support her husband.. dadi Bua.. pardon them, they respect her tremendously , dada ji kept the truth from her so as to spare her heartache.. Viplav then steps forward and protects Dhani.. to love her was his decision entirely , so to get married to her without informing any one also was totally his decision. Dashrant pipes up courage and justifies ,she came suddenly and at that time... slap! Before all.. Bau rejects Dashrant's lame excuse! Viplav is not taking it lying down he challenges Bau who warns him to stay out of that which is between her and her brother. But Viplav argues but it's due to him and Dhani! but Bua yells she has been lied too , not by him but her brother! Bau shouts ,such a liar and so many are his misdeeds that he there will be no place for him in hell too! she calls Dashrant a chameleon who changes colour all the time had it not been for Viplav she would never have come across the truth!the scales have fallen from her eyes! She is ashamed of herself today! That she put her trust in a brother like him! Dhani attempts to defend dada ji but is shunned away as an outsider! Here her own family has betrayed her by hiding such a big truth from her! rants Bua. Never told her about the marriage. Dashrant apologises yet again he made a mistake. Viplav too supports his dada ji..he married on his own, never asked or involved any one. Kanak comes flying to her son's rescue , says they were going to tell her ,but Bua calls her a cheat and a liar who clearly forgot what Bua meant to Viplav! Bua is livid she has no place in this house , she is surrounded by lairs and cheats! they all cheated her! she screamed and then weakly under duress she sank in the chair and Kamini then takes over the role of the consoling and calmly Bua.. Viplav's revelation of his marriage was going to cause tempest. The righteous stood on firm ground whilst the liars and cheats were pulled to bits by Bua.. is she a heartless hot headed old matriarch or is she some figure who is not afraid to call a spade a spade! In the whole scene she seems to commend Viplav it's courtesy of him she gets to know the truth! Dashrant she assaults before all the defender of faith of Banaras ,the king of his castle slapped , accused right before the people he rules in his mansion. Is Bua a gorgon or angel?..who comes warning the likes of Dashrant to mend his ways..
The effects of being lied to, are far reaching. Bua is devastated ,all her dreams are shattered !none of them matter to her!she washes her hands off such selfish lying cheats. Kamini acts as the defence attorney for the Tirpathi's and fights on their behalf.is she genuine?or is she selling herself as Miss sense and sensibility to Viplav and all his family? She begins by defending Viplav if he fell in love with Dhani where does the fault lie? If dada ji lied to her where lies his fault? he is the great high priest , why did he lie ? he lied for her sake so he could shield her from pain?and as for Viplav.. love is always true..bua points out by exemplifying Kamini ..not everyone is pure hearted like her.Yes love is true but the one who loves can be a liar ,Bua argues as she glares at poor Dhani. Kamini points out, but one cannot be judged on the basis of just one lie? Viplav has the same blood running through his veins , so he cannot be in the wrong .she continues since childhood she has heard about their virtues, their affection for Bau,.. and unity of this family, and today she gets to witness it as well.. all of them are lying to save each other , Kamini tells Bua..is Kamini complimenting the family or is she scoffing all! right from Dashrant the high priest to his grandson Viplav who blatantly lied about this nurse! But she also paints herself as the peacemaker! when she begs her dadi Bua to forgive them all as they stand before her with clasped hands!..after creating the impact she bids her dadi Bua to rest , and then gives, a leave it with me nod to Viplav! before she takes, Bua away..
The Tirpathi's gather their wits about them after Bua leaves. Dhani begs dada ji to forgive them as due to them all this trouble happened.Kanak is peeved at the very sight of Dhani!and screams if only the ground may open and swallow them alive! Future is so insecure now . Viplav explains to dadaji it was inevitable, was bound to happen when ever we told Bua ji! she would have suffered the same amount of pain, it is good that she knows now as they too are not weighed down by the burden of a lie.. Dashrant now confesses that one truth can end a thousand lies! besides.. Bua is his older sister and she has full right of punishing him whichever way! she did right. Dhani does sense a feeling of guilt It's all due to their marriage things went awry, she asked Bua to forgive her ,next Dashrant and now she seeks forgiveness from Kanak as usual insinuates its Dhani s fault! as she throws the sliver purifier on the floor and literally blames dhani of the impending doom! approaching this house! the calm before a storm!
Bua broken spirited. prays before Durga goddess to give her the strength to bear the pain of this betrayal of loved ones! Bua also apologies to Kamini who cared for her since many years but in return she couldn't repay her. But Kamini replies she never asked for anything ,why would she? She has what she desires !all the world on one side and her dadi on the other . She gives dadi Bau her medication and says seeing her in pain ,she forgot her own agony. Bau regrets she gave her ,her word but couldn't adhere to it! Kamini then returns the ancestral necklace and suggests its more appropriate for Dhani Viplav's wife. Bua yet again lauds Kamini for her large heartedness she too once was like her !but the time now has come for some accountability..
In the kitchen Viplav wants to know why Dhani is cooking despite the servants?she says its best they are kept away from the commotions of the house. He agrees but feels it had to happen , lets hope things end and don't escalate any more. Dhani is anxious about the way Bua reacts towards dada ji.. Viplav shares for a moment he thought Bua would leave ,it's a good thing that Kamini intercepted and gathered Bua.. so Kamini leaves an impression upon Viplav.. Dhani notices it..
Well Kamini sheds her pearls of wisdom again when Dashrant walks into there room,she is worming into the hearts of the Tirpathi clan. She advices Bua that she was the one who taught her that anger destroys wisdom..she alerts her dada ji is here to talk to her.. and advices no point in going over what's done.. now look to see if the pieces can be picked up... Kamini leaves after preparing the ground for Dashrant who once again begs his sister for forgiveness and wishes to repent! Dhani brings food for Bua she refuses.. Bua hates the sight of Dhani ,she upset her plans ! Bua mocks Dashrant he became a mute spectator while under his very nose Viplav brought home this chit of a girl! Bua mocks him he couldn't manage his family how will he manage her legacy !she says she still has enough strength to safeguard the virtues and values of her family name! She will fix everything! Now whatever decision she takes he will have to accept it! .. Viplav tells Dhani that first thing in the morning Bau wants them all downstairs for some veneration.. he reckons her anger has not diminished as yet and Dhani confirms she saw dada ji her room at her feet asking for forgiveness. As part of his penance dashrant before Phool Chand and select pundits and his family members renounces himself as the maha pandit of Banaras!
Well what a shake up.. Dashrant giving up his power! Alongside the sweet sweet too good wise girl Kamini.. very interesting she has a sad past too.. has been Bua's carer.. perhaps for her money.. Bua I believe really wanted to settle this girl with Viplav.. not a bad thought..only she didn't consider that Viplav has the right to fall in love and marry... Viplav did justthat...now had Bua been in charge would Viplav still married Dhani... for me a big yes Bau needs to get that and stop blaming Dashrant.. hamlet53 27.4.16
