so let me start with the premise- the show is shedding light on some pretty accurate attitudes but of course with the theatrical element intact. dhani is still a young adult, young girls- 6 or 7 years old are sent off to ashrams. this attitude has to do with the role of a wife in her husband's life. hinduism takes the phrase lady luck very seriously. we are supposed to be the spiritual shakti to our husbands. lakshmi to narayan- their good fortune. its the concept that we somehow cease to be auspicious, fortune does not prevail within that woman and it is thus her husband dies. if you investigate, there are many cases of women being blamed for death and material misfortune- called dayan. even when we take pheras, i believe one of them constitutes a promise to stand between him and death. my spirit should depart the world before his. traditionally that was seen as our dharma. and a widow is basically someone who will never achieve moksha because she is unable to fulfill her dharma. and that is thought to be due to bad karma from previous births and her bad karma causes death- starting with the one closest to her- the husband. thus she is inauspicious. of course there are many theories and interpretations of it. this is a very small bit that i managed to recall from my time spent on this topic years back. but ya these are some of the reasons why widows are thought of as inauspicious. a man contrarily makes no such promise so there you go.

thanks tejas for throwing light on this very sensitive topic , that of the widows being inauspicious... don't know how many more years it will take in this fast changing world to stop these old customs and rules for widows.

i think wearing safed saree practice is not followed in south india...here v dont c any vidvaa aashram here they wear color sarees jewels everything..only thing is they dont put sindoor or mangalsutra...apart from this widows are treated lyk others only..they attend marriages n all functions...
south india is way developed in issues related to women than north india
