Hi there, i'm not familiar with why there is a stigma attached to being a widow? Could someone explain the reasoning behind it? And also is it just exaggerated in drama land or is there quite a big portion of people who have this view in India?

I too am not an Indian ..I fail to understand this stigma. From I read I guess it has something to do with a sin commited by this woman in previous life..so she becomes a widow in resent life as a punishment . I don't know if I am right.

what they've shown in this show is infact less. there are families who won't kick out the widow bcoz of society but behave so bad that it is better to walk out. but we all know how women are taught not to leave their in-laws house no matter what. those who leave widows in kashi, or throw her out, live in worse conditions.
things are improving, their are societies that work in this regard and support the widows to lead a respectable life but much is to be done.

They are showing reality. In Northern India this custom is still practiced and widows themselves accept this.
Actually when Husband dies his family as well as society consider this as bad luck or bad omen brought by girl. They tie up her with this and blame her for husband's death hence this stigma.

Things are slowly changing and society has adopted these changes. But still widows don't do any stuff during pious occasions like marriage , brith ceremony or any other rituals.

Another thing I've seen even well educated people do - not see the face of a widow first thing in the morning. something to do with, you see a widow and then the whole day is ruined
Not all families practice such pathetic things. But, many do. And goes around in rich, poor families, city, villages. All to do with the thinking.

What is being shown is in comparison a fairy tale version to reality in some parts.

Widows who are packed and casted off to ashram are treated in a very inhuman ways literally untouchables and bad omen. And also high amount of politics go off in the ashrams, which includes exploitation in every form with the helpless ladies. Also it is deep ingrained into them that they are not worthy of living with the husband being dead and have to leave off every material things and go spiritual till they die ..so they even dont have the will to fight things off!!!

Things have been improving with the media exposure and NGO's but its still in a sorry state.

Not sure about stigma but I gues a widow is considered unlucky. Do the mete out the same treatment to a widower? That the two face of the society we see. It's clearly a mans society who probably set these customs.

It is very sad how these women are treated, first fate deals them a bad hand then society, even though it's still happening i don't think it's the way all widows are treated even in north India as the ashram s would be overflowing... it's only those whose family don't treat them nicely , like old lady whose children came to visit she had no other option, it's similar cases. Hope it changes soon as the show should make people think how wrong they are to treat other human beings so harshly.

Sad but what is shown is true. Although I am of indian origin and born and brought up outside of india, I see it in the society that I live in. Widows can't give away their children during weddings, can't participate in auspicious functions, can't wear bright colours and so on...
