i think

was marriage between dasharath and kaushalya

a bit like cross cousin marriage

though ramayan doesn't mention much of cross cousin marriage

i mean

second or third cousins

aj and sukaushal are two third cousins

means there fathers are cousins as well

I see... Didn't know of that connection before. Is it mentioned somewhere?

I suppose those days the number of people were less and they concentrated on finding a good partner. Apart from immediate blood relations (and close family relations), I guess others were allowed to marry if the man and woman were willing and nobody else had a valid objection. There is a tradition that men/woman can marry their cousins - the daughters or sons of their uncles, like mother's brother's children or father's sister's children. Also, if someone of totally unrelated families do get married, the bride and groom's parents adress each other as siblings. For example, the bride's mother (or aunts, mother's sisters) adress the groom's father as elder brother and he inturn addresses them as his own younger sisters and so on...

It's certainly possible... But I haven't heard of it before. It's new information to me.

This is also possible since Valmiki Ramayan was not written. It was composed and passed on by word of mouth. Hence there might be people who may have written it later and hence the many manuscripts...
