Hi All,
Since, most of us here are big admirers of Arjun, I thought may be you will find this book (The Great Golden Sacrifice of the Mahabharata By Maggi Lidchi-Grassi) a good read. At least, whatever I read thus far, it has been very good.

It seemed to me, that it is more or less inline with BORI/KMG editions by keeping the essence intact. The book is with easy flow of the language and removal of unnecessary parts, which is very unlike KGM, where we find the language to be archaic and annoying. The book mainly highlights from perspective of Arjun. Also, it shows not much talked about aspect of Arjun-Aswathamma's friendship which I found very intriguing.

Hi partha

The book certainly is a good read.. Especially I liked the style of writing,in first person. Arjun speaks...but I could not connect with the following parts.

Aswathama was elevated to almost the status of Arjun's friend, admirer and well wisher. The epic never talked of any such friendship mainly because Aswathama in Gurukul had Arjun as his competitor in terms of valour and his father's love also. Aswathama is far older to Arjun...

Arjun's preference of Subhadra over Draupadi... Maggi grassi made Arjun and Subhadra the eternal lovers and continued it till the end. Maggi's Arjun is so vocal in his preference that is not the case with epic Arjun. Vyasa's Arjun never confessed that Subhadra is his preferred love. If you read maggi's book till the end you will understand what I am talking about.

Maggi's Draupadi pined for Arjun but he did not respond ..which I felt is not acceptable for me. Epic Arjun really cared for Draupadi if we observe Vyasa's indications which are subtle but sure.

The war portions are well described but there also at one place she made Arjun admit Karna's superiority which again is false. Epic Arjun acknowledged Karna's prowess but never admitted like that.

So I have my own reservations about the book . I may say it will nail ARDI lovers who will never accept Subhadra's reigning presence in Arjun's life.

This is strictly my view. I hope you won't get offended.

If you come across my discussion thread" Did Draupadi love Arjuna more? do read it since many ARDI lovers and non Ardians also participated. There I established Arjun's love for Draupadi in the light of the epic.

Hi Lakshmi,
Yes, I also found the friendship shown between Arjun-Ashwathama surprising, as I never read anywhere that they had such close friendship.

But, I think the reason the author portrayed a sympathetic view of Aswathama because, as far as I know, even in the epic Ashwathama is never shown to conspire anytime against Pandavas nor defame them at anytime, also he supports Arjun(Pandavas) during Virat yudh, where he openly blasts Karna, Duryodhan, Shakuni for robbing Pandavas by cheating in the dice game and ridicules Karna saying he is simply no match to valour of Arjun and also Aswathama refuses to fight with Arjun.

Aswathama really loses his self control and composure and starts behaving erratically only after Drona's death which culminated in the massacre of upapandavas. I think only after Drona's death, he really wanted to annihilate Pandavas and their army and unleashes Narayana Astra, but before that incident, he was not fighting with that much fury. Actually, I found Drona to be more furious in his war cry after becoming commander but I found Aswathama even then was not fighting that desperately as to annihilate Pandavas. Also, I think Arjun during Virat yudh and at other places, always held Aswathama in a fair light. So, in my view, these could be the reasons for author's sympathetic view of Aswathama and caused to create a bond of friendship.

Regarding point of Subhadra/Draupadi in the book, as I just started reading but did find couple of instances as you mentioned. I think both of them were very dear to Arjun but in different ways.

Yes, I have checked out the thread regarding Arjun-Draupadi and it was an amazing thread where you put forth all the necessary indications given by Ved Vyas in the epic. The final proof of their great but silent love, if I may say so, is the way Arjun ridiculed Yudhistir by taking an instance of Draupadi in the battle field, which clearly showed the pent up anger and frustration on Arjun's part regarding the emotions he shared with Draupadi. That is a clear indication I believe Ved Vyas has given of their eternal relationship.

This thread I feel is a real tribute to Arjun-Draupadi's true love and friendship and as I said earlier it deserves to come out in a book format, so it can reach fans/admirers of the epic and quell some of their doubts. Specially, regarding the ridiculous link-up of Draupadi with Karna and more outrageously with Lord Krishna.

Finally, no I did not find your reply offensive at all, as I said earlier, previously I was more into Arjun/Krishna and war moments and so on, and never thought of the epic and its moments from point of view of Draupadi. But, this thread opened up that perspective and shown Draupadi in a new light, which I find more enjoyable and in essence with the epic.

Thanks again for this wonderful thread and please do update soon.

Hi partha

Liked the analysis you gave for Aswathama Arjun bond.Yes I agree he always put forth his views on Arjun before Duryothan and showed the mirror to him. So the author Maggi grassi must have taken creative liberty to highlight Aswathama in the light of this fact.. Possible.

Actually the Aswathama factor did not upset me but I did feel for the way Draupadi is reduced as a second fiddle to Subhadra..and Arjun's indifference...just not in my taste. That is why after reading the book once I did not attempt it again... Arjun without doubt is my all time favourite.you know why.

Are you on Facebook? If so visit Arjun the Mahanayak Facebook..all Arjun lovers interact there and great posts are available on the Epic and Arjun.

Just gone there to clear some one's misunderstanding about Babhru Vahan and Arjun war. He watched BR Bharat where they showed Arjun's head separated from his body by his own son. I gave him references where it is said Arjun just became unconscious and was revived again.

Thanks for reading the discussion thread. Good minded people like you only could accept the facts.

Arjun walked towards her and held her hand...the warmth of his hand revived her from her state of embarrassment, disbelief and confusion. He took her towards the asan that was decorated with flowers and went to the upper part of the boat.

Panchali relaxed a bit and sighed with relief. She took deep breath and assured herself to be calm and composed..No need to get smitten, get mesmarised or get lost in his aura or charisma.. She told herself. He is her offender ,he left her for twelve years ,roamed freely, married multiple times and on top of it made Subhadra the queen of his mansion...may be his heart also..

As she looked at the mirror that was nicely arranged sideways she found her image laughing at her and teasing her." Why do you deceive your self? You are already smitten and mesmarised by his presence. Look at yourself. You are desparately waiting to drool over him,in his arms..

Panchali defiantly resisted." No way.. I am so sure of my self. I was hurt. I won't reconcile with him that easily.I am not weak."

Panchali got up and ascended the steps to reach the top. Where did he go? Leaving her alone? She was irked at his behaviour.

Arjun is making the boat move by swiftly rotating the wheel arranged there. Suddenly she saw Krishna's boat adjacent to them.. Satya is too excited and waving at her...She called out" Panchali I am enjoying so much...you also I hope.. Why is your husband running away from you? " Satya's teasing voice reached Arjun and he turned back to see her lying on Krishna's shoulder

Arjun called back." Why should I run away? Satya looks like you need to check your sensibilities... He walked behind Draupadi, held her waist and raised her hand to wave at them..

Krishna shouted in glee" Parth.. You answered Satya perfectly.. Now let us move in opposite directions. I don't want to disturb your exclusive moments... He addressed Draupadi.." Sakhi you have to give the return gift.. Don't forget.

Instantly Krishna turned his boat in opposite direction and Satya waved again..

The full moon is showering nectar like moonlight . The waters of Yamuna are motionless as if they don't want to disturb the most beautiful woman and the archer par excellence

Panchali stood silent in his arms.. If she try to move away he may feel bad..he did so much for her birth day...but why did he tell lies about his special guest?

Arjun who is observing her expression quickly retorted.." How did you like your birthday event? I hope you enjoyed everything..

Panchali asked without mincing words ' Why did you hide the fact? You fooled me by doing so..

Arjun raised her face and looked into her eyes " First of all your father told me only one day before. If I tell you I have to convince you and I can not allot that much time for that..
And secondly I want to surprise you and see your expression.

Panchali silently listened to him. Arjun continued." Madhav is with me. And my brothers co operated with me. All five of us stood as one in making it possible.

Panchali got irritated. She wanted to hear sweet words like... I did this to win you to please you...
But he is including all his brothers in it thereby proving that when it comes to Draupadi all five of them together only will be taken into account.

She is not Subhadra who can claim her love so boldly.
She raised her eyes and said in a bitter voice.." Ofcourse I know you will never want anything about me to belong to you exclusively..you proved it by sharing...

Arjun's jaw tightened and he pulled her closer," Why do you always misunderstand me.. I didn't mean it that way.. Krishnaa be positive..it will help you get rid of your bitterness.

Panchali bent her head trying to hide the moisture in her eyes. She measured her words and said." I understood Arjun... My place in your life...

Moongod glanced at Rohini as if asking her." Is there a way to get the two loving souls come together and fulfill their love? Rohini has no clue.

The stars are blinking with hope and despair. Will they reconcile? Or not.

Yamuna suddenly became violent with anxiety. The boat bent this side and that side making Panchali get nearer to Arjun out of fear of losing balance. She is standing at the corner with his hands holding her waist. Arjun took her closer and inhaled the blue lotus fragrance.

The jasmines in her hair smiled at him and invited him to feel their beauty and fragrance.

Arjun took her face in his hands and confessed." I did everything to please myself. I want to live the day you arrived into this world for my sake. How gratifying it is to feel that someone is created for your sake? Your arrival, your existence is connected to me. I am the one to make this world blessed with your existence... In a way it is a celebration meant for me not for you..

Panchali moved away from him and declared." I know you are too good with your words. But I am the one at the receiving end. Time and again you proved I am not indespensible you can have your life entwined with beautiful girls who are smitten by your charm..

Arjun made an innocent face and muttered as if to himself." What is the use of such charm that can not have an impact on you,the most beautiful one ever born...

Panchali turned her face and bit her lip.She knew any moment she may get overpowered by his irresistable charm...She desparately wishes to avoid that.

But heart does not pay attention to what mind wants. She suddenly remembered he did not give her any present . She remembered when Subhadra celebrated her birthday as soon as she arrived at Indraprasth..he gifted her seven different sets of haar to wear all through the week.

Panchali felt some thing touch her neck. Arjun fixed the black beeds short chain with little gold and a beautiful locket hanging in the middle. The locket is too cute as it was embellished with nava ratnas. Arjun took her down to the mirror and Panchali fell in love with the cute chain.

No haar or necklace is a match to this she thought. She raised her head and looked into his hazel eyes. Arjun smiled and said." When I went to Kamarup desh and defeated Yakshas I got it and some more.. I waited to give it to you when we are finally together. Now the occasion is special.. We are together. How did you like it? He asked.

Panchali touched the chain endearingly and decided not to part with it anytime.. She will always keep it. She admitted." It is too beautiful. Unique.

Arjun hugged her from behind and asked, looking into their mirror images." Where is my return gift"
