Ramayan is one of India's greatest epics depicting the trials and tribulations of Bhagwan Vishnu's seventh avatar, Lord Ram. Along with his wife Sita and brother Lakshman, Ram went on a 14-year exile to the forests at the behest of his stepmother Kaikeyi to kill Ravan, the King of Lanka, and relieve the world of his tyranny. This holy epic gives us a glimpse into the ideal household and depicts the duties of various relationships in a family and society, representing the ideal son, ideal brother, ideal husband, ideal wife, ideal king, ideal friend, ideal devotee, ideal mother, and ideal father through its myriad characters.

NDTV Imagine presented this show from 21st January, 2008 -- 26th June, 2009 based primarily on Valmiki Ramayan and Ramcharitmanas among many other revered sources of the Ramayana. 300 episodes in length, it met with great success from viewers around the nation as well as internationally, so that the channel was compelled to dub the show into three other languages of India (tamil, telugu, and malayalam). Produced by Sagar Arts, the family that introduced mythology to television in 1986, this age-old classic was retold with majestic sets, a new star cast, and lilting music composed by the veteran music director, Ravindra Jain. Enhanced technology, enthralling production values, and a fresh approach to storytelling have given this Ramayan an appeal that entertained and delighted viewers across all age groups, and once again gave mythology a revered place in Indian television.

In 2008, Ramayan won "Most Promising New Show of the Year" from Indiantelevision.com's New Talent Awards.

Gurmeet Choudhary, who played the lead role of Lord Ram, also won "Most Promising New Talent of Tomorrow" from the same award ceremony.
