Can I also join this forum please. I love reading about Indian mythology and ever since I watched the old Mahabharata on youtube, the BR Chopra one, I am hooked. I don't know much but it's extremely interesting.

Vrish, you were complaining about express-tapasya, weren't you?

How did you miss Ashwatthama's tapasya? He prayed for practically an hour or so...

Express tapasya, wow.

Okay I have a question. Yukteshwar Giri said that we are living in Dwaparayuga now and not Kalyuga.
Has anyone else come across this. Do you agree?

Oh that.
The "ascending Dwapara" Yuga, right?
Miscalculations by Parikshit's priests..
From Kaivalya Darsanam?
I have no idea, since generally it is accepted that the years are calculated by deva-years, not human years.
And also, I have not come across anywhere that the four Yugas after completion move backwards... So I have my doubts on the theory..

Oh not that. I don't know anything about that. But I read this book Autobiography of a Yogi, most likely you have heard o it. There it was mentioned that Paramhansa Yogananda's guru Yukteshwar Giri, who was a well-known astrologer, had calculated that we were actually living in the Dwaparayuga.

Please what is the ascending dwapara yuga?

Mostly the same thing. I think the ADY is something like, Kaliyuga ended 1100 years after 5000 years before.. Hm that is -5000+1100 = ...3900 years ago.
So the cycle reverses and we go back to Dwapara or something.
He quoted things like science development and better facilities and standards of living, and literacy etc for this.
I'll search for the book. It must be somewhere in my bookshelf (needle in a haystack).

As per the Srimad Bhagavatam, The Supreme Lord incarnated in the following forms -
1. Sanat Kumaras
2. Varaha
3. Narada
4. Nara-Narayana
5. Kapila
6. Son of Atri, born from the womb of Anasuya (Dattatreya?)
7. Yajna (son of Prajapati Ruci & Akuti)
8. Rishabha
9. Prithu
10. Matsya
11. Kurma
12. Dhanvantari
13. Mohini
14. Narasimha
15. Vamana
16. Parashurama
17. Vyasa
18. Rama
19. Balarama
20. Krishna
21. Buddha
22. Kalki

My question is - Out of all these incarnations, why are only 10 of them well-known?

Amongst all these incarnations, if Varaha is mentioned as the "second" incarnation, then why is it considered to be the "third" incarnation in the Dashavatara?

I have no intention of stoking an issue or a controversy, and I don't mean to hurt any religious sentiments. But if Buddhism has evolved as a separate religion of its own, then why is Buddha (still) regarded as an incarnation of Lord Sri Hari?

AH, Dasavatara.
You see, IMO, out of all these incarnations, the avataras in which Bhagavan displayed his divinity was in the ten main incarnations.
Apart from these, Sanakadi Kumaras, Narada, Nara-Narayana, and Vyasa were devotees.
Prithu was a king.
Yagya, Rishabha and Kapila were spiritual preceptors.
Dhanvantari and Mohini were Amsas. The purpose of these avataras was, I think, mainly spread devotion and knowledge to the world, and as a king, preserve social order.

The Dasa avataras were incarnated mainly for the purpose of dharma (even the others were, but these ten were about restoring dharma, while the others were maintaining dharma).
Matsya - to restore Satya Yuga
Kurma - to show social service and restore nectar to devas
Varaha - to bring back the earth, where dharma is possible
Narasimha - to show what to do to a wicked person
Vamana - To show the difference between a wicked and an arrogant person
Parasurama - to show the purpose of a government and how to deal with a bad one
Rama - to put an end to a corrupt government's sovereignity over the world
Krishna - to teach about love, and removing corruption from each pocket of the world
Buddha - to spread peace and love and remove the adharma of himsa
Kalki - Same as Matsya, to restore Satya Yuga.
