^^ I'll try to do it before this weekend, Aishu. You're right. We had so much fun last year that I know everyone will definitely want to participate again now. :D

OMG that's great!!
I know! Last year was so much fun!!
But it's fine if we have it a bit later. I know you have all of your exams this week. You might need the weekend to just relax.

I'll probably put the thread up this weekend, as there's no way I can before that.😳 My toughest exam is on Friday and I'm already getting the butterflies in my stomach. Pray for me!

Lola

Since we are now on pg 145 of the Game of the Week: Name that Character!!! thread (my, it sure was a lonnng week 😆), I thought of a similarly challenging, but different game.

The game is - Connect two mytho characters using the minimum number of steps. Valid links would be family links (including half-brothers b/w generations like Vali & Arjun), avatars, marriages and so on. But the links do have to be familial, to draw some limits - links such as friends and enemies don't count. So if asked to connect Indrajit & Shatrughan, one can't use Ravan's enemy = Rama. In short, a link b/w the 2 of them don't exist, at least not thru that path.

E.g. Connect Arjun w/ Lakshman
  1. Arjun's father = Indra
  2. Indra's brother = Surya
  3. Surya's grandson = Ikshvaku
  4. Ikshvaku's descendent = Lakshman
So here, 4 steps was all it took. If someone provides an answer, but someone else can do it in fewer steps, that person would win, and get to name a new pair, which others then have to connect.

Even avatars can be used. Like connect Sita & Subhadra, one can go
  1. Sita's = Lakshmi's avatar
  2. Lakshmi's other avatar = Rukmini
  3. Rukmini's nanand = Subhadra

Note that there does actually have to be a connection b/w 2 people - don't just randomly try and connect any 2 characters. E.g. don't ask to connect Vashistha & Sudama, if there is nothing that actually links them.

I think this would be a fun new game for the new year. Anybody w/ any other suggestions?

Excellent suggestion Vrish. Brilliant game. Very very interesting and intelligent. Well I had the suggestion too and was to tell personally to Lola as this idea didn't click to me (presence of this thread) but now after looking at the rules of your game, your idea is far far better than mine. Mine was just simple one of the game of 'select the odd one out'. Still I am adding that idea as game possibility for the future.

Person framing the question may write down few names (Rules may be set for minimum and maximum limit within which person framing the question is free to reduce or extend the number of options - 4 or 5 or 6 whatever) which all should have something in common logically but for just one name. The person giving the answer must also provide the right reasoning exactly what puts that name into different category. Names may also be of places or kingdoms not just persons. They can also be of weapons.

For example, (Just for the sake of my simplicity here, I have written in all, the correct answer last otherwise the order would be random obviously.)

Ram, Bharat, Lakshman, Shatrughn, Dashrath
Dashrath is clearly odd. (father)

Ram, Dashrath, Bhagirath, Sagar, Janak
Janak is odd (lineage)

Vashishth, Vishwamitra, Agatsya, Valmiki, Vyas
Vyas is odd. (Different epic)

Ram, Krishna, Parshuram, Vaman, Hanuman
Hanuman is odd (Shiv's incarnation)

Matsya, Kachhap, Varah, Narsinh, Parshuram
Parshuram is odd (lived full life as human)

Aditi, Devaki, Kaushalya, Renuka, Rohini
Rohini is odd (mother of Shesh's incarnation)

Dushasan, Keechak, Duryodhan, Hidimb, Karna
Karna is odd (killed by Arjun)

And so on... The examples I have given are much easier than what can be actually set.

Alternatively, instead of the above rule, what can be a possible variation of this game is to fill in the blank. The person has to answer just one more name to add in the list with same common logic.

Like in one of the above examples,
Vashishth, Vishwamitra, Agatsya, Valmiki, _______
Atri can be the answer. But here with this rule, multiple answers will be possible.

Thanks for bringing it up again, Vrish... and oohhh I like both suggestions! The six degrees of separation - mytho version sounds really fun and challenging... I suck at the regular celebrity version but maybe I'll be a little better at this 😆

The odd man out idea rocks too, I think it will be an easier game for that more people can participate in. But the challenging one has potential to be more interesting. There's no reason we can't have both and just alternate between making each one sticky. Or... should we wait for a couple more ideas and have a poll?

Shivang

I like your idea as well. Pick the odd one out seems a good game, if we can provide characters from a wider range, and then ask the questions - your examples above, like mine, were rather simple. I was thinking something like

Mohini, Prahlad, Kartavirya, Sugreev, Paundrak

Something like that. (No, there is no answer to the above, since I genuinely picked a random set. But for a question setter, if one can pick a set as diverse as above, and then challenge others to pick the odd man out, that would be fascinating)

Lola

I think we could make it a composite. If one provides in the question, only 2 names, it can be understood, if not explicitly mentioned, that one has to connect the 2. If one provides 4 or more candidates (I suggest a range b/w 4-7), then it will be understood that what's being asked is the odd one out.

Another thing we could have is a 'Complete the series/sequence' type question.

E.g. Dileepa, Aja, _____, Atithi

Answer being Rama, since I started w/ Dileepa and skipped a generation every step of the way.

Or

Hidimba, Draupadi, Uloopi, Chitrangada, _______

Answer being Subhadra, who was the next to marry a Pandava

Do we want the game of the year to be a composite of the above 3, or did you want to have separate threads for the games?
