BTW, has anyone watched Peter Brook's Mahabharata?? Its different in many ways from the popular version of the stories that we are used to and perhaps that's why too many Indians do not like it, but I found it brilliant in terms of acting, presentation and script. Bruce Myers is my favourite Krishna along with Nitish Bharadwaj.😳

I watched it. I rented a DVD, which was pretty poor quality, and the video store didn't have a second that I could use, so that the last part of it - the killing of Karna and beyond - I couldn't see.

Anyway, I saw it, and Peter Brooke, like BRC, took too many liberties w/ this serial by giving it all some bizzaro meanings, which nobody could imagine coming from the likes of Vyasa. For instance, the people in the Mahabharat were not ancestors to the rest of mankind, as the movie seemed to suggest, particularly @ the end when the showed the kid who heard the story from Ganesh & Vyasa bowing to Uttara as his ancestress.

Also, the movie made a mess of certain things, like showing Ghatotkacha killed on day 1 of the war, which totally robbed it of its meaning. Abhimanyu's killing in this movie reminded me of the killing of Petrocleus by Hector in the movie Troy.

I didn't like the movie for those reasons. But I don't share some of the criticisms that were directed @ it, such as Kunti, Madri & Karna being black. Incidentally, Mallika Sarabhai looked totally out of place in this movie, given its Western cast.

I guess the boy was Parikshit..Isn't it? Though it was never mentioned explicitly..

Actually I don't have much problem with altering stories (because that's what everyone has done across all ages), but I normally look for genuine and subtle acting, soulfulness and more importantly understanding the characters. In all these criteria Peter Brook lived up to my expectations. I thought Mallika Sarabhai was great as Draupadi. BRC was undoubtedly brilliant and legendary, but Peter Brook too is no less albeit in different way. But Ghatotkatch was not killed on day 1. He was killed much later - on day 10 possibly, but yeah, before Abhimanyu - contrary to what we know.

Unfortunately in other Indian mytho shows they put too much effort in glorifying the central character and in the process they make a mess out of that character and the show becomes pretty dumb and annoying with horrible OTT acting and unnecessary melodrama. That's what happened with RS Krishna.

Ok, there's the problem - if the boy was Parikshit, then the fact that I couldn't figure that out until you just told me is the problem. From a Western POV, they're showing a foreign mytho, and assuming that its audience would be as discerning as a Hindu mytho buff, like most of us here in this forum.

Ghatotkacha - what evidence suggests that he was killed on day 10? He died on night 14 - after he had killed Alambusha and Ashwatthama had killed his son Anjanparva. He was not just a sacrificial lamb in this war - Alambusha couldn't be killed by Bhima, and there were number of occasions when he rescued the Pandava army from dire situations. The death of other warriors are all over the place, but the major ones - Uttar, Sveta, Bheeshma, Abhimanyu, Jayadrath, Ghatotkacha, Drona, Karna & Duryodhan are pretty much fixed.

Yeah, I know everybody changes things. The acting was fine, but I just couldn't digest the costumes (they were similar to the peripheral guys in DBSK - the stuff Rukmi, Sishupala et al wore, that's what everyone in this movie wore.)

Lola di!
Let's make one great big Navratri thread and make it global.
Since the IF background's already changed, we should do it now.
Before Dussehra at least!

There's already this Navratri thread on the main page

Happy Navratri - [Sept. 28th - Oct. 5th 2011]

Instead, the Durga Puja thread could be made global. Or else, start a combined Dusshera/Bijoya Dashami thread that can be made global.

What you say is right. But I guess owing to its play format and limited time, I would rather ignore the diversions and give priority to presentation and the philosophical theme - which I found par excellence, at least far better than most Indian serials, IMO.

As for the clothes, dunno why, I actually found them more believable than the gold and silver plated 'chamkiley' costumes, over-sized crowns, armlets and heavy jewelery of our desi mythos. However the military gear was more like that of the Vikings or perhaps Barbarians than Iron age Indians.

Can anyone tell who played Vasudev in JSK and DBSK? Seemed to be the same actor.
