The music director who has been in film industry for almost 25 years will be facing acid test in this year festive season. Anu Malik's three big musical offerings ('Zindaggi Rocks', 'Jaan-e-Mann' and 'Umrao Jaan') are being screened this year. Unfortunately, 'Zindaggi Rocks' proved too mediocre but 'Jaan-e-Mann' succeeded to get critics and masses appreciation. Anu's biggest challenge will be J P Dutta's costume drama 'Umrao Jaan' featuring Aishwarya Rai in the title role. The composer is facing cut throat competition from contemporaries like Himesh Reshammiya, Shankar Ehsaan Loy and Pritam for supremacy. Besides this professional challenge, he has undergone difficult times while composing for these three albums.
During this phase he faced the severe illness of his father Sardar Malik, who unfortunately passed away after prolonged illness. It was challenging time as his scheduled was shuffled between composing three different genre of music. Tanuja Chandra's 'Zindaggi Rocks' music was blend of rock and blues music, 'Jaan-e-Mann' has situational "Broadway musical" style songs while 'Umrao Jaan' has collection of beautiful classical musical soundtracks. His itinerary was divided between two versatile lyricists -- Gulzar and Javed Akhtar, but still he enjoyed every bit of it. Malik has shown resentment in sharing space with any other composer in the credits of the film. The veteran music director is learning new techniques of compositions to be well equipped for future projects. He has been assigned big projects like Harry Baweja's 'Love Story 2050', Sanjay Gupta's 'Woodstock Villa' and Mahesh Bhatt's next film. Anu has shown desire to work for gifted directors like Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Aditya Chopra, Karan Johar and Shaad Ali in future.
