Stockton was an excellent passer Arguably the greatest of All-Time.
But that's his only advantage over Payton. Payton could score better, he was a better defender, and a better rebounder.

Normally, scoring is the most important characteristic an in individual basketball player. Take Kobe for example, that's why he is considered so good. Payton has huge advantage over there against Stockton. I think Payton dropped 20+ppg 7 times in his career, while Stockton never reached 18ppg. Payton was also a much better defender. He won 1996 DPOY. And Made record straight 9 All-Defensive 1st Teams. He was also a better rebounder. And though Stockton was better passer, Payton himself was good at it. He once led the league in total assists and routinely finished at the top there.

Lastly, 1996 Western Conference Finals. Payton DOMINATED Stockton. Embarrassed him. Both made All-NBA 2nd that season, and were All-Stars. Payton dominated Stockton, to get his team to the Finals. So therefore, Head to Head, Payton also has advantage.

Notice, this was the most important series in both their careers at that point.


In summary, though Stockton was a better passer, that's it. Payton could do all the other things on the court better, some arguably more important. I understand passing is important for a PG, but the other advantages Payton has are far too great and we can't just say better passer = better PG. Becaues you need your PG to score, pass, defend, and rebound. And no one did that better than Gary Payton, the Glove.

SSK dude,, tell me what is the primary job of Point Guard? Once you google it , all your long crap will be redundant. Do you know when Steve Nash won first MVP, his scoring average was only 16 pts per game while Amare's average was 27 ppg.

I already addressed what you said in my post. However, PG aren't just there to pass the ball. Sometimes you do need your PG to score, they do defend, and they do rebound. First of all, Stockton was no Steve Nash. He never finished even Top 6 in MVP voting.

2nd, better passer doesn't mean better PG. Darren Collison this year got more assists and is a better passer than Billups. Does that mean he is a better PG? No Billups can score, and defend better. Payton has similar advantages.


Lastly, Payton himself is a good passer as I mentioned in my post. He led league in assists one year.




So really, come on slumdog, that's all you got? So are you saying all the PGs that are better passers are better PGs? 😆 Even Brevin Knight got around 9 assists/game one year. Is he also better than say Tony Parker? Chauncey Billups? No. Mark Jackson is 2nd All-Time in assists. Is he even in any conversation as greatest PGs of All-Time? No. Even though that's their main duty. He's not.

Vijay and ssk bhai can carry on because I don't have so much knowledge about Basketball.
