udit outclasses sonu in vocals. just because udit narayan doesnt chose to sing clasical songs doesnt mean sonu is superior.

sonu nigam's range is, infact NOT greater than udit narayan's. sonu ATTEMPTS singing at a higher range but doesn't really have proper control. in my opinion, he sounds cacophonic in that range.

For playback singing, you just need an excellent voice quality, emotions, and being able to sing beautifully. Udit Narayan and Kumar Sanu do better than Sonu Nigam in this because of their voice qualities.

Voice quality is all about personal opinion. different voices appeal to different ears. you seem to like KS's voice but many of the people I know do not. And I personally feel that SN does have the best voice of the 3 you have mentioned.

In emotions, Sonu is excellent. You can hear pain in his voice in sad songs like tanhayee. You can hear the playfulness in his voice in songs like deewana tera. He can seduce you with just his voice in romantic songs. He can sing patriotic songs with the appropriate expression in his voice and can sing bhajans with total devotion. And then he can sing tapori songs and sound like a tapori too. Like many people have already said here, he is just so much more versatile! He can sing all types of songs. He has sung all varieties of genres in bollywood, including classical. And who says classical music doesn't suit bollywood? Haven't you heard songs like baawri piya ki or is pyaar ko main kya naam doon? Knowledge of classical music is always helpful, because someone who can sing classical can sing anything.

And what is this playback playback you keep talking about? Your topic title is simply SN vs. UN and asking who's the better singer. And well playback singing is not the only type of singing. In fact SN is a much better singer because he has not limited himself to only playback singing, but has done everything from playback to pop to devotional to folk to classical.

There is no way one can ignore the amount of talent this man has!👏👏👏

First of all, you can't 'prove' who's the better singer...it's all opinion! And awards are no measure of talent. Himesh Reshammiya has more singing awards than KK. So does that prove him to be a better singer?😕😆 I trust my ears more than these dumb awards which are chosen by a jury that have no knowledge of music. They just go with the most popular song of the most popular actor. The singer or singing has nothing to do with anything. My ears prefer Sonu over UN. They also prefer Rafi Saab over Kishoreda even though Kishoreda has more awards and hype. I'm confident enough on my own musical judgement and don't need any mathematical statistics to choose a favourite. Instead of counting awards, I consider more important factors such as voice, expression, versatility, sur, ability to sing complicated melodies, accuracy while singing live, musical creativity shown while singing live etc. etc.

anyways, he idolizes Rafi, and not only Rafi but many others too. And there's nothing wrong in idolizing someone. But he surely doesn't copy Rafi. Most people with enough knowledge of the songs of both singers would be able to see how Sonu has created a style of his own, which has a jhalak of all his idols including Rafi.

How is this proof that Udit is better??
1) Usually, the main version of the song is often chosen for awards, not the sad version or seductive version (where akshay and shilpa are waltzing away)..the happy love song is obviously gonna be more well recognized.. athough if you try to find the song on limewire or bearshare or iMesh or any other music sharing program, you'll find Sonu's version & it's difficult to find the ones by Kumar Sanu and Udit
2) Sonu complimented Udit's voice.. anyone would do that. Udit compliments Sonu a lot too so it's mutual respect they have for each other..
3) The song he's singing live - anyone with minimal singing talent could sing that, no offense. And of course he's legend - no one's denying that.. only Sonu is more of a legend 😆
4) Like I said, they have mutual respect for each other.. I commented on this very article you mentioned and it's common knowledge that Subhash Jha (the author) has a grudge against Sonu so he writes BS about him... I doubt there's an ounce of truth in it.... even if there was, lots of singers auditioned to sing panchi nadiya from refugee (including Uditji) but Sonu was chosen so there are plenty of songs out there that ony Sonu is fit for. I bet if Udit and Sonu both wanted to sing dil deewana, tera jadoo chal gaya or bawri piya ki, Sonu would be chosen because of his range, vocal flexibility and emotion. There's a certain style to each of those songs that Udit wouldnt be able to imitate (especially not dil deewana from pardes) but Sonu can replicate Udit's singing style easily
