Frankly, I think Sonu is a much better singer gayaki-wise. He can easily sing in a booming voice but he's been singing softer lately so people have come to associate him with a soft voice but his deep voice really shines in songs like 'mujhe raat din bas' or his rendition of Rafi's 'duniya ke rakhwale' and many others - if you follow his songs, you will notice he's more versatile, is able to modulate voice effortlessly and maintain beautiful soul. The harkats and murkiyan are out of this world and Sonu sings classical very well, a branch of music that Udit ji is very kamzor in. Listen to the songs from Sonu's album "Classically Mild" and listen to all the vocal complexities, especially in 'bheege bheege' and 'soona soona.' Yet he can sing 'soona soona' perfectly live as well - he sang it on several occasions including interviews and the Saregamapa Lil' Champs finale. Considering Sonu can sing complex songs like 'mera rang de' and 'soona soona' so well in concert, while Udit struggles with singing fairly simple songs live, Sonu is much, much, much better. We cannot ignore live singing because that shows an artist's true abilities. In a studio, the singer can get however much time he/she needs and can sing the song many times, esp. if the singer has a good rapport with the MD...then the best verses of the song can be copied and pasted with the technology we've had for the past two decades. When a singer sings on stage, the weaknesses come out and this is what happens when Udit sings because his live songs are mediocre next to the film ones; on the other hand Sonu's live singing is even better (if that's possible?) when he's live. Here are a few vid demonstrating Sonu's legendary singing prowess:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e1rkt245pyM (😲😲😲 can't imagine any singer do this except for Hariharan..and even that is questionable)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aALtJXHfgLE

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ERv8r6y1cU (especially listen from 3:10 - 3:30 in this one..Uditji could never send chills down your spine like this with such an eerie feel and seductive voice. Sonu's voice and expression causes so many hidden feelings to surface, almost like you're lost in a meditative trance, the way it untangles the knots in your soul. Conversely Udit can only seem to summon the 'happy-jolly-first love' type of feeling ' nothing as deep and pensive as the emotions roused from 3:10-3:30. 👏👏👏 Also note the improvisations and energetic spirit in the second bhangra song - he got everyone dancing. Simply wow)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XfclquiXd5A (he can sing duets by himself!!! 😆😆😆 Haha - notice western influences when he sings in the male voice at the end)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Bhil8jZR5E (Sonu mimicking Udit's voice 100%)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=61pgKzU0tfY (impeccable opening alaap ..demonstrates vocal ability through classical training. Notice how he changed the entire tune to a more classical feel. Takes a genius to do that)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c20omdrzKUg ('kal ho na ho' near the end of this vid but notice the difference from the previous vid ' he's singing it rock-style from 4:50 onwards. From Indian classical to rock?? Only Sonu can do this!!! 😉😉😉 Udit is limited in this regard)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gXpLoF2Pitw (more classical ..amazing how he builds the emotions to such dizzying heights at 3:00)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZcJ3zbQr3CI (a qawalli-type number..esp. listen from 5:35 onwards and the end part)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7eSLYNgxDT0 (what can I say? No other singer renders Rafi's songs as well as Sonu except for the legend himself.. prob because the notes are v. difficult to master. Voice quality is always incredible 😃😃😃)

I could keep going on and on with vids of Sonu's singing. What can Uditji sing live? Jadoo teri nazar, Papa kehte hain, or Main yahan hoon yahan? No offense, but my 12 year old brother can sing those better in terms of gayaki than how Udit sings them on stage (minus Udit's voice, which I guess is the main reason why he's still in the industry...if his voice wasn't nice, his singing wouldn't be able to compensate for it ' if Sonu's voice wasn't that great, his singing could still wow people. 'cause honestly, some of the new singing contestants like Mussarat and Harshit kick Udit's butt with their mind-boggling range and vocal modulations). The least Udit could do is add some spice and improvisation to the songs when he's singing them live but that seems beyond his scope and creative ability. I've been to a couple of his concerts with my aunt and they were very disappointing...I nearly fell asleep

Sonu has a stronger grasp of sur and classical taal and raag and his incorporation of western pop/rock-style in Hindi music is impeccable. He is the Mohd. Rafi incarnate, a true ARTIST 😉 (not just for commercial 'hits' like Udit's 'mere mehboob mere sanam' but he has an appreciation for true musical art and is always trying to bring songs like his 'bawri piya ki' or 'Classically Mild' songs to the forefront) His versatility and skill is only to be equated to legends like Kishoreda and Mohd. Rafi saab.

Why do you choose Udit? Because of his voice? There's so much more to a singer than just voice. I rest my case.

To Babumoshaai:

Thats a matter of personal choice. I think Sonu's tone has more of a punch to it - you also have to factor in that Abhas only has a recording of the music in the background while Sonu has a 75 piece orchestra which is a lot louder ..so he has to exert more effort to over-ride the noise. And Abhas wasn't singing 20 of Mohd. Rafi's songs back to back either. In any case, just because you think Abhas was better in one aspect doesn't mean he can do all the things Sonu can. The rest of the vids are a testament to that. Also, it's a lot easier to copy songs someone else has already sung than to conceive the original song. That's why I never rate contestants over playback singers.. unless they're out-of-this-world, like Anwesha (who I seriously think is the next Lata!) 😊

point taken... i hadnt thought abt the scale 😛

but i maintain what i said abt style of singing ... i feel that the puch of sonu is a tad bit too much... abhas is more balanced... aneesk is great too but he underdoes rafis to be safe i think... abhas is the only contestant who can sing rafis songs excellently.

@ at anwesha comment: she and ash were my fav but i think anwesha= shreya and ash = alka... i like ash's voice more but anwesha is streaks ahead in singing... lata is the best female voice.. i like sadhana too

Why don't you all discuss it based on the fact.

As I acknowledged the quality of vocal are base on below criteria:

1. Solidness

2. Rendition Style

3. Phrasing

4. Voice control

5. Feeling

6. Key Range and Pitching

7. Natural in-born quality

Above of all I'm more convenient with Udit voice..so soothing...

I don't know what you mean by 3. Phrasing. Maybe you mean to say Diction? Anyway, Sonu's pronunciation of Hindu, Karnatak, Marathi, Punjabi, etc.. words is always excellent. I think Sonu beats Udit for 3, 4, 5 and 6 and they're tied for 1, 2, and 7. What kind of English do you speak? Solidness??? You can't say whether depth of voice is good or bad - depending on the song, a softer or harder tone may sound better

Sorry, english is not my mother tongue

Yes phrasing mean diction. How clear the words is pronounced at either low or high notes with the right choice of stressing for each diction.

Solidness means..the vocal was projected 100% out to the air. Some singer intend to lost their vocal solidness when they hit the high notes....like something was blocked their voice at the throat.

For me Sonu Nigam Voice has more husky element and Udit voice is more soothing and sweet.
