Yes the covid situations might have turned things around, but it's been this way since the very beginning. They barely brought artists/celebs from the 90s + 2000s or 2010s. Our generation do have amazing talents....we just need to give equal appreciation to them.
There are too many reasons as to why this doesn't happen.
Firstly, the creative team does not make good decisions. Firstly they used to focus these shows on actor guests...now they've finally (and thankfully) switched to musical guests.
Secondly, They love repeating their ideas. If I am not wrong then everyone had forgotten about RD Burman in the 90s....then 2000s onwards there's been a surge of popularity for him. He has given great songs, but I always say there are so many more artists. That would even avoid repetition of songs and themes. Lets be honest, would RD Burman and Shankar-Jaikishan special have the same songs? Of course not. This year they also did Kalyanji-Anandji special, for me it was the best episode of the season. Anandji himself brought so much to the show, it was so damn enjoyable.
I remember watching Jatin-Lalit special last year, it was so much fun. I had even made a post where I mentioned having a Nadeem-Shravan special and calling Shravan...but that won't happen now. Other than these two jodis, the 90s had Anand-Milind (who did 1000+ songs in 9 years), Dilip Sen-Sameer Sen. Call them too. Because if the channel calls singers and actors the songs will repeat...both actors and singers are dependent on composers.
Then thirdly, a very important thing to note is that music directors till the 90s have done too many memorable songs, easily 100 can be listed. But the channel has to make sure songs don't repeat. And this is the problem with the post 2000s batch, they dont have 100 songs. I had written the same thing about Ajay-Atul special, they are supremely talented but have only 10-15 songs which are then recycled.
Post 2010...everything went downhill, and now I dont even listen to any new songs. Coz there were more misses than hits. So a post 2010 special with anyone is iffy.
Fourthly, another major point to consider is that the previous decades have much more volume of supreme music, I dont say that coz of nostalgia. I would enjoy Raat Ke Humsafar (Shankar-Jaikishan) as much as Ye Dil Tum Bin (Laxmikant-Pyarelal) as much as Aye Mere Humsafar (Anand-Milind). These are great quality songs and had a universal appeal to them, people of all demographics can enjoy them.
Post 2000s another issue is that the youth would enjoy it but seniors, not so much. Like for example: my grandmother grew up listening to the likes of OP Nayyar, but she loved Jatin-Lalit's melodies equally, so there's no 'apna zamaana was better'. However I dont remember her enjoying most songs post 2000s, barring a few numbers by Sajid-Wajid, SEL and Pritam. The keyword being here few.
And the quality of older songs get proven when after 20-70 years of being released, they are still saleable, marketable and share a huge fanbase.
