Mumbai=rude???

Mumbai……… the rudest city! Recently a survey held by Reader's Digest, one of the best-selling general interest magazine in the world, concluded Mumbai as the rudest city in the entire world. The survey was based on grounds like dropping papers to ascertain helpfulness, 'thank-you' responses from the customers and how often someone held a door open for others.

But then, we believe that's only one part of the story. Mumbai, the city that never sleeps, has people who struggle to make both ends meet - jam packed trains with people teeming out, dug up roads at every nook and corner. So when do they have the time to be sweet or polite? Rather what is their definition of being rude?

Riya V Anandwala quizzes television stars on what they think about the survey and whether they really think Mumbaikars are the rudest.

Gaurav Chanana

Gaurav Chanana-"People in Haryana are a little rude"

Though I am not from Mumbai, I have lived here enough to judge the city and its crowd. By no means, I think Mumbai is rude. It is a very subjective matter. There cannot be centralized or universal rules for cities, you see.. And the grounds on which the survey was conducted are not appealing enough. According to me, Haryana is a little rude, but then that's the way they talk, so no point generalizing!

Vipul Gupta

Vipul Gupta-"The parameters of the survey are not justified"

The parameters on which the survey was conducted were quite vague. It's more of society based than anything else. For example, here in India, we touch elder's feet and that's a sign of respect, and the same doesn't happen elsewhere, so what will you say to all that? I think the parameters on which the survey was conducted is not justified. And the same goes with Delhi too; the auto rickshaw guys are very sweet and at the same time helpful too! I have traveled quite a bit, and in my eyes Singapore though not rude, was not warm and friendly either.

Barkha Bhisht

Barkha Bhisht-"In my opinion Delhi is very rude"

I have been staying in Mumbai for around two years now, and I don't think that it's even a per cent rude. When I came here, I didn't know anyone, and people here were so friendly. Outsiders take offence because; people here demand their own space, which is quite normal. In my opinion Delhi is very rude. The people there are not at all friendly. They thrive on a particular culture and don't easily accept others.

Gurdeep Kohli

Gurdeep Kohli-"Many of my non-mumbaikar friends say that Mumbai is rude!"

Well, I am a true mumbaiite! But many of my friends and colleagues say that 'people here are very rude to talk to, in our town, everyone has an open heart.' Even Arjun says the same, as he is from Delhi. And I quite agree to them, as people here are always on a run. They are forever running behind money, and think that it's going to fly away. In my opinion, London is the rudest of all. Even in their airlines, the stewards and hostess never trade a smile.

Ajay Gehi

Ajay Gehi-"In my opinion, US has a very biased attitude"

I don't think, Mumbai is rude but yes, it's certainly business minded. There have been many cases where their attitude has been tested, and trust me, they are really helpful. In case of 26/7 floods, or talk about the series of bomb blasts,people have gone out of their way to help others. So how are they rude then? In my opinion, US has a very biased attitude, and they consider Indians as a second or third rate country, which is quite rude!
