India, Mumbai bound?

This is a show that seems to have a lot of promise. It is based on a call centre and its workings -- that itself is a subject that has not been explored as yet on Indian television.

After making urban shows like Lipstick and Remix, one would have expected Rose Audiovisuals' show, India Calling to open in an urban metropolis. But the first shot took us to Jalandhar in a village that looks at Mumbai with wide eyed wonder.....

Chandni, the main protagonist does not only wear a Bunty Babli salwar suit, but her dreams too are inspired by the big screen diva, although, she dreams small. She wants to go to Mumbai to find out what the city is all about, before she gets married. Mansi Parekh delivers an effortless performance as Chandni, although she has to be consistent and show that extra zing to attract viewers, who are spoilt for choice at 9:30 pm on weekdays.

Another surprise package is Russhad Rana, who does a good job as the scorned groom to be, but surprisingly, he doesn't waste any time finding another bride for himself. Well, to be fair, Russhad's character looked more interested in Chandni than her elder sister from the beginning of the show.

There are many people who where of the view that the show started on a very slow

pace...well, the pace was definitely slow, but to give credit to the makers, this seemed necessary with the anticipated hustle bustle of Mumbai that's sure to come next week.

In the last scene of last week, we meet the male lead, Vipul Gupta, who in turn, meets Chandni in a scene that is reminicent of the train scene in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge.
All in all, the start of this show is a little different from the trademark Shrishti Arya show, but once the scene shifts to Mumbai, we are sure to see much more of her modern trendy woman...whom we have grown to love!

One more thing...Chandni could have done without those irritating side curls, or were they a crucial part of her image??

Nigaar's double whammy!

She had surprised everybody with her powerhouse performance as the diabolic Sheetal Singhania in Zee TV's Lipstick, now she is all ready with two new shows that are going to be aired at the same time on the same days!

Double bonanza: Nigaar making her presence felt

What more could an actor want. Nigaar Z Khan has Star One's India Calling and Sony's Ek Ladki Anjani Si lined up at 9:30 pm, Monday to Wednesday starting 21 November. In both the shows she plays the negative lead!

"I am excited, here I am competing against myself. I hope viewers will watch both-- you know catch the repeats maybe!" laughs Nigaar, who plays Kamini Khanna, the powerful owner of India Calling in the Star One show, and Laila, an insecure woman who is passionately in love but insecure about its outcome in the Sony show.

"She is my favourite actor. She is brilliant in what she does and the best part is that she is very hardworking. When she first did Lipstick, she didn't know how to speak in Hindi, our director advised her to read Hindi newspapers aloud! And she did...now look at her! After Lipstick, Nigaar's look was copied, in this show again, she will make a fashion statement" says producer Shrishti Arya.

Nigaar with Mansi Parekh and Vipul Gupta on the sets of India Calling

Although India Calling is launching on 14 November, Nigaar will make an appearance on 21 November. She plays the pampered, all powerful owner of a call centre, who treats her brother-in-law, Aditya, (Vipul Gupta) like her own son.

Did she know that her shows were competing against one another at the primetime slot? "I had no clue! I knew that India Calling was being aired at 9:30 pm, but had no idea that Ek Ladki...will be aired at the same time! But they are two very different characters -- while Kamini is completely negative, Laila is a shade of grey!" says the actress who's keeping her fingers crossed.

Nigaar's bouquet of work

* Made her small-screen debut as Sheetal in Lipstick (Zee)

* Featured as Anjali in Jeet (Star Plus), Geeta in Saathiya — Pyar Ka Naya Ehsaas (SaharaOne) and Shyla in Hum 2 Hain Na (Sony)

* Played Anjali in Prratima (SaharaOne)

* Did cameos in Siddhanth (Star One) and Rihhaee (Sony)

*Has also done a play called See No Evil, Hear no Evil!

FATHER FIGURE: Anang Desai in India Calling
Khichdi's lovable Babuji now has a new calling — as Dadaji. Anang Desai now enters Star One daily, India Calling, as the grandfather of Aditya (Vipul Gupta), the owners of the call centre where the action unfolds.

"Aditya does not have a father, so he and his brother are looked after by me. I play the patriarchal figure at home, as well as at the call centre," informs Desai.

I'm not THAT old!

After the success of Khichdi and Instant Khichdi, Desai has been slotted into grandfather's roles. "In Khichdi, my character's name was actually Tulsidas Parekh. But everyone called me Babuji, and the name stuck even off-screen," he says.

"I know that now everyone wants me to play these older characters. But I am not so old yet. I can also play an older brother, or a middle-aged man," he rues.

Gujarat se Punjab tak

Desai also features in the Zee daily Reth, in which he plays the father-in-law of the protagonist, Jia (Deepa Parab). In India Calling, Desai is a typical Punjabi dadaji.

"I appear in kurta-salwars, and have less grey hair than Babuji does. The character has Punjabi mannerisms, so, it is distinct from Khichdi's Gujarati setting." Desai is slated to make an appearance from tonight's episode.

India Calling, produced by Goldie Behl and Shrishti Behl Arya, of Rose Audiovisuals, is about Chandni (Manasi Parekh), a small town girl who arrives in Mumbai to land up in a call centre. "I was also part of Goldie's film, Bas Itna Sa Khwab Hai as well," says Desai.

Talking about Instant Khichdi being back after a break, he says, "I don't know what is happening on that front."

After Khichdi and Instant Khichdi, will Readymade Khichdi follow? "We have not been told when the show will be back," laughs the actor, who will also be seen on the big screen in Ujjwal Chatterjee's film, Utthan.

Anang facts

1. He is a National School of Drama alumnus.
2. Made his debut on TV with Raj Se Swaraj (Doordarshan), and on the big screen as freedom fighter J B Kripalani, in Richard Attenborough's Gandhi.
3. Was seen as King Kyoti in Princess Dollie Aur Uska Magic Box.
4. His wife Shashi is a homemaker; he has two sons, Nachiket (studying in N M College) and Tanuj (who is in Utpal Shangvi School).

India's calling - Vipul

Vipul Gupta is the prospective next best thing on Indian television.
Catch up with the hunk who is beginning to have a fan following in
the very first week.

STAR One is known for coming up with distinctive ideas and diverse
shows, and India Calling is one of them. A new entrant on STAR One,
the show has a youthful feel to it. The story so far has been based
on a girl Chandni, played by Manasi Parekh, who moves to Mumbai in
search of her sister and works in a leading call centre, called India
Calling. Furthermore, the story focuses on her encounter with Aditya
Khanna essayed by Vipul Gupta, who owns the place.

Even before the character makes an entry on the show, the promos
being aired have already created a fan following for Vipul Gupta.

Coming from Delhi, Vipul is not new-fangled to the razzmatazz of
entertainment. A well known model from Delhi, he completed his MBA
and worked for a call centre G E Capital. An ambitious man that he
is, he decided to come to Mumbai to make it big. Apparently, the
industry has welcomed him graciously.

A prominent face in the advertising world, Vipul modelled for a list
of prestigious brands, including Mc Dowels, Indian Oil and Airtel.
However, seems like he always had a strong inclination towards
acting, as simultaneously he was dabbling with theatre.

As far as his first break on television is concerned, he considers
himself lucky, as he did not have to go through the long queues for
auditions. The makers of the show spotted him in the Lakme commercial
and called him for a screen test. He cleared the audition and landed
the role of Drone in K Street Pali Hill, aired on STAR Plus. After
that there was no looking back.

Multi-tasking seems to go well with Vipul, as apart from television,
he is also working in movies. Playing the main lead in the movie
Anjaan, he is excited about his role. The movie is set to release on
25 November.

Talking about his character Aditya Khanna, in India Calling he says,
the character is an outright brat with a heart of gold. His motto in
Aditya's life - if you have it, flaunt it, but do not harm anyone.

As far as the similarities between the character and Vipul are
concerned, he feels since Aditya is a very contemporary character, it
is not difficult to identify with him. Speaking about the way his
career has turned out on television, he sounds pleased. He prefers
doing quality work to a clutter of shows.

As we wind up, we wish him luck and hope that he has a successful
stint with whatever he does in the future and his new show India
Calling does have India calling for more!

India calling Ayub after Kasshish
By: Tushar Joshi
December 1, 2005

Ayub Khan as Vishesh in the serial
After the end of Ravi Rai's Kasshish, Ayub Khan has joined the team of Shrishti Behl Arya's India Calling (Star One).

As Vishesh Khanna, Ayub will play the role of Chandni's (Nigaar Z Khan) husband. He is Aditya's (Vipul Gupta) older brother, and also the owner of the call centre.

Positive character

Commenting on Ayub's role, Shrishti says, "Ayub is a terrific actor and fits in perfectly with the role I have. Vishesh is a businessman, who has a pleasant personality and a positive outlook towards life. He's a dynamic character who will sparkle like a ray of sunshine whenever he comes on screen. I think it's the first time we have such a personality on a show, who is forward thinking, yet enigmatic."

When asked what drew him toward India Calling, Ayub says, "I liked the intensity of Vishesh. Other than that, working with Shrishti and the prospect of having a show on Star One was alluring as well."

Ayub Khan and Nigaar Z Khan in India Calling
Get Shorty!

The actor says this is the first time he will be working with Nigaar Z Khan, "She plays my wife, and I haven't worked with her before. In fact, I keep calling her Six Feet Two Khan, since she's so tall! I have just started shooting for the serial, and my character will evolve as the show progresses."

He adds that there are some similarities between India Calling and Kasshish. "Both shows have very good stories and strongly etched out characters." Apart from India Calling, Ayub will also be seen on the big screen in Prakash Jha's Apaharan, releasing this week.

"I am looking forward to the audience's reaction to my role as Kaashi Pandit. It was great working with Ajay and the rest of the cast."

This granny is the busiest in town!

This is one granny who has her task cut out! Her date diary is full and she enjoys the thrill of it all! Meet the busiest granny in town -- Himani Shivpuri. She is on at 9:30 Monday to Wednesday on Star One and Sony, playing granny to the channel's newest entrants, Chandni in India Calling and Anu in Ek Ladki Anjaani Si.

"I am very tired but I enjoy what I am doing. It is a coincidence that both my shows are on air at the same time and in the same time slot!" says the lady who is presently in Jaipur shooting for JP Dutta's Umrao Jaan.

"I am juggling my films along with my dailies and moreover, I am a workaholic so it does not matter," points out the actress, who has started writing a novel for kids, but has no time to finish it.

Himani, who became a household name with her character, Devaki in Humrahi

Himani as Chandni's best friend in India Calling

was advised by her friends and family not to pursue TV, but she stuck to her resolve and undoubtedly her characters particularly in shows like Zee's Astitva will be remembered for a long time to come.

"My character in both the shows is not of a typical grandmother. They are so different from each other that it's a challenge doing both at the same time," says an excited Himani, who is also slotted to appear in another Star One show, Ye Dil Chahe More, soon to appear on air.

Himani Shivpuri as the cynical granny inEk Ladki...

This actress has come a long way from being a 'one serial at a time' motto to being the busiest artiste her age. Although the lady has very little time for herself, she makes it a point to see that she gets her 30 minute jogs three times a week!

As the actress signs off, she says, "I have just two hours of sleep everyday, but that's life and I like doing things differently!"

Telly BABES
Around them revolves the fate of four new serials. A candid chat with the leading ladies who could be tomorrow's icons
T HEY CAME, we saw, and they may soon conquer the viewer's hearts too -- providing a welcome respite from the Tulsis, Parvatis, Romolas and Camillas of the television world. Four new girls and four new shows recently went on air and they all stand to gain, if their shows do well, their tales and tribulations manage to hold the couch potatoes night after night and if they manage that much needed 'TRP' pull. We speak to Kanchi Kaul (Ek Ladki Anjaani Si), Manasi Parekh (India Calling), Ami Trivedi (Kituu Sabb Jaantii Hai) and Chandana Sharma (Yeh Dil Chahe More) about the characters they play, their USP, their take on prime time competition and finally given a chance who would they like to play Tulsi or Jassi? Read on to find out what our four spunky TV betis have to say: Kanchi Kaul She is: Anu Sachdev of Ek Ladki Anjaani Si Plain Jane or Spunky Senorita: "She is a spunky and free spirited girl with an unpredictable life story." USP: "The show is fastpaced, has loads of drama and is very entertaining. I think the way my character deals with her uncanny situations is what will define the serial's USP." Like Anu? "Yeah, when she yaps and talks, she's just like me. The only thing uncommon between us is that I haven't gone through any artificial insemination." My take on the Tulsis and the Parvatis: "I don't know about others, because my competition is with myself." Tulsi or Jassi: Jassi because she is young, fun loving and a cool chick. Manasi Parekh She is: Chandni of India Calling Plain Jane or Spunky Senorita: "Well, Chandni may come across as a simple and plain girl but she's very spunky. She's definitely not a Sati Savitri and takes up for what she believes is right." USP: "That Chandni will always remain Chandni. She will dress the way she is -in salwars and her parandis and won't become fashionable or go through any makeovers." Like Chandni? "I am very similar to her but what's different is I don't wear patriotism on my sleeve like her." My take on the T ulsis and the Parvatis? "I think these new shows can bring about an evolution in TV programming. Five years ago, Ekta Kapoor brought about a genre change with saas bahu serials, which became successful. Similarly, the current lot of shows can probably bring about a positive change in terms of look and content." Tulsi or Jassi: "A mixture of both. A little bit of Tulsi by my side, a little bit of Jassi in my life." Ami Trivedi She is: Kituu of Kituu Sabb Jaantii Hai Plain Jane or Spunky Senorita: "She is definitely not a plain Jane. She is a middle class girl, who I'm sure lives in every family." USP: "The fact that she is easy to relate with, is grounded in reality, and has aspirations like any other girl of her age." Like Kituu? "Yes, very much." My take on the T ulsis and the Parvatis: "I guess my show has the potential to take on the competition because it's quite dif ferent in content. Moreover, change is always welcome." T ulsi or Jassi: "Jassi definitely, because as a character she's more interesting, simple and real." Chandana Sharma She is: Tara of Yeh Dil Chahe More Plain Jane or Spunk y Senorita: "Definitely spunky with loads of attitude." USP: "I think her attitude is what's important. She gets into many different situations, sometimes sticky, funny and weird, but she also knows how to get out of everything. She doesn't panic." My take on the T ulsis and the Parvatis: "Be it a Tulsi or a Parvati, every character on TV has enjoyed a certain reach and I don't claim to supersede them. What I know for sure is I will ensure that I make Tara a memorable character and give her a place in the history of lovable TV characters." Tulsi or Jassi: "It's a difficult question but I guess Jassi is more my age so I will go for her."
