Long post alert
There was a show called “Seconds Before Disaster” which aired on Discovery channel some 9 years back. So if anyone remembers then my below analogy is kind of in same direction.. Just that I am looking for “Seconds before The Big Heart Change” of Babu Saheb. And if you all are interested in my analysis as to how and what and when actually it all started... then do give this post a read.
So after enjoying what all happened in last 2-3 episodes I finally had time to look back and see what exactly caused the change in Adi and his attitude towards Imlie. In short what exactly was the Turning Point.
I literally had tears watching Adi being emotionally broken seeing Imlie hurt and on the verge of dying but all the narrative arc till then dint sit well with me. I thought of Adi’s character to be under developed or may be poorly written that how come the man who was shooting daggers from eyes till 2 episodes back is now crying buckets for the very same girl.
And after some pondering I thought there must be something that must have happened in the last few episodes (which must be tiny in size but had a big impact on the whole narrative) that my eyes missed while looking for the big things.
So I went back and started my rewatch from episode 55 and 56. And as I was right I caught that Tiny yet Big moment immediately. Which for me was the TURNING POINT in Adi’s heart/feeling/attitude change.
And here it starts...
In epi 55 after having the dinner Imlie’s friend helps Adi in washing his hands. Then Imlie comes and offers him Towel, which he clearly rejects, wipes hands on his shirt and walks off.. Leaving Imlie with her infamous expressions.
After that Adi sees the room decorated and lashes out at Imlie which she defends pretty well. She finally blurts that he is not the only victim of all the marriage fiasco but she is too. This must be the first time his brain got the taste of his own medicine (the blame). The brain who was so self conscious all this time to even think about Imlie’s situation.
Epi 56 she saves Adi during the riot. And there she mentions how she had to save him as the whole family must be worried about him, especially Malini didi. And they go back home. Scene fades.
And finally the next scene which starts with the close up shot of Adi washing hands (close up shot simply means to let viewers know this is something important for you all to see) and its Imlie this time pouring water for him. After washing she again offers him Towel (but with apprehension in eyes) and this time He takes towel (with a pretty dramatic background music, again its to emphasize this is something important happening) wipes his face, and about to give it back to her while looking at her. She looks at him and says Thank you Babu Saheb… and Babu Saheb responds Thank YOU.
Both go in their direction and the scene fades to black.
So this 4 scene sequence is the Turning point for me.
Scene#1 marks as to who was Adi at the start of the sequence.
Scene#2 emphasize as how first time Adi had to face the Truth that Imlie is also a victim and is going through so much suffering (may be more than him). She is much weaker than him in terms of social status and age but still she is Brave enough to fight this battle all alone without blaming him for anything.
Scene#3 where she finally shows how brave she is physically. And how much worried she is about the family, not him (as her forced husband). This time he figures out she is not the selfish girl he used to consider her. She is still firm on her stand that she will not take what Malini’s.
Till this time Adi’s misunderstanding, misjudgment about Imlie started to fade away (gradually if not fully).
Scene#4 This is the last scene to confirm the Big Change in Adi. And there can't be a better way to juxtapose the first scene.
Again emphasize on How Adi accepted her in his life as a person at least if not wife. He acknowledges her presence around him and its not going to bother him going forward.
And finally after solving the puzzle the rest of the happenings (Adi being concerned about her, worried about her) all made sense to me.
So now over to you all. Let me know what you all think of my loooong analysis. Do you have any other inputs which I might have missed.
