There was a family in our neighbourhood in Kolkata, the mother was extremely dominating, a complete shrew... the son was slightly effeminate and totally tied to his mom's apron strings.
The mother got her son married to a nice normal girl, then she didnt let them sleep together, like Ammaji she used to interfere in every matter of the couple, she would eavesdrop and refused to give them any privacy. The girl got sick and tired and left that house, she sent divorce papers.

My best friend in college, her first marriage was the same case, her MIL was crazy, when she got angry, she used to throw things at my friend, once she threw a cutting implement (called bonti in Bengali) at her which could have killed her.
My friend feared for her life and left that house, she got a divorce after a long court case as the MIL was refusing to return the jewelry given to my friend by her parents.
Anyway later she got remarried to an armyman and has 2 kids now. But now her SIL bothers and insults her a lot although her hubby is nice.

India mein yeh sab Ghar ghar ki kahani hai. What they do show in serials is not very unreal or untrue! Indian MILs can be the worst witches on earth!

Agreed... though serials over-dramatize stuff, they do depict the Indian truth in several cases.

What an amazing discussion going on here. I like every point of every members.

In this show they are showing a good MIL- Dadiji, an Egoistic and dominate MIL-Ammaji, an understanding yet modern bahu-Sagarika and Modern, arrogant and mean Bahu - Rani. So let us see how this drama unfolds.

What kind of life is it to marry like that and get "divorced" and marry again ? Better not to marry at all.

That is why nowadays girls call their MILs "baggage" and want to live alone with just their husbands.

Then any misunderstanding would be just with their husbands. If that too happens then it is too bad.

Why do they show in TV serials the "second" marriage is "happier"? what if that too turns out to be bad?

Everyone deserves a second chance at happiness. Just because the first marriage is dissolved thru no fault of hers, a woman has to stay single all her life? Ultimately its HER decision if she wants to take the risk again. In most cases Ive seen 2nd marriage is more successful as by then the girl is more cautious and chooses her husband more carefully...
I always advise my daughter and niece that when its time for them to get married, they shd choose a boy with a nice, kind, civilized mother...if the mom is nice the son will also be nice.

That is what I am saying. This is not trial and error method . This is a matter of one's life. Marriage has to be a one time thing.

And every person should do their "research" before they make the leap.

Marrying in haste and repenting later is not very wise.

I have heard of one relative who got married. the marriage broke for apparently no reason. There is a kid involved. and the kid is with mom

The guy is not married again. there is divorce case going on with the girl asking for hefty alimony.

A family is broken apart and both partners have to find other partners.

there is kid in between and heavily the guy is losing money.

What did he do? Either no one is telling or there is nothing really. Yet the girl is not willing to live with him . All she is asking for is the money.

It is not an easy thing to marry and break the relationship . There is so much pain involved.

Still people marry again sometimes it works out sometimes it does not .

What is the point in all this? In laws better not play a part in this kind of break ups.

It is better to live separately away from parents if all these problems are going to crop up.

@ bolded well said Moms have to be nice for sons to be nice.
