Not just that her mother in law is staying with her and putting up wth her whims and fancies regarding rituals and stuff when it should be the other way round.

That way this name change drama is getting to be irritating. Where was the necessity to bring lawyer to change bahu's name?

When bahu is not willing to change her name how can amma bring the lawyer? it is going to backfire on her.

A little bit of consideration would help amma so much in life. she is used to getting her own way in everything.

Most Indian MILs try to control their sons with iron hand and after son gets married, MIL bullies, insults, berates the wife/ DIL all the time to keep her in her place so she doesnt get any importance in her son's life.

DIL is competition for the MIL...competitor for the son's affection and attention. The whole concept is rather sick but then desi mentality is sick most of the time.

This is true, I didnt make it up 😆...heard it in my ultra traditional Sasural ...they would say, "Maa dekho tomar jonney daashi (daasi) enechhi"

Anyway like I was saying, the relationship between Indian MIL and DIL is like that between a snake and a mongoose, either kill or be killed.

Either the MIL tortures and insults the DIL OR in certain cases, some modern DILs do the reverse!

I have a aunt who is highly educated , a dentist by profession . She recent got married to a surgeon who is from a very 'modern' family ( at least by the outer look they seem modern ) .

After the marriage , her MIL did all her best to put aunt down , trying all her means to create rifts between her son & his newly wedded wife . She was even found eavesdropping at night outside the bedroom of the newly weds . AND , the MIL is a working lady with quite high education herself .

So...we should think once again whether we have actually become modern or not ? Love & mutual respect is a reflection of an individual's personality & not always his/her education quality/monetary status etc etc .
