Chapter04
An adventure alone
Hermione teetered and clutched a long, hard, pole-like thing and tried to right herself. Her head felt very dizzy all of a sudden. She sat down on the floor and it crunched beneath her. She sat there for a while, closing her eyes and putting her head in her hands. It took her nearly fifteen minutes to recover from the shock of the journey. Now, she opened her eyes and looked around. She was sitting on a floor of leaves, mud and grass. The thin, long thing which she had clutched turned out to be a small, young tree. She squinted in the darkness and tried to gather her bearings. Yes, she decided, she had undoubtedly landed up in the Forbidden Forest. She had been in the creepy forest far too many times with her friends, for her not to recognize it. However, the revelation of a known place did nothing to ease her fears. On the contrary, they increased ten-fold. The Forbidden Forest was hardly a place to go for a walk in the day, much less at night.
'What a fine mess I've gotten myself into! All thanks to that wonderful locket,' she thought ruefully.
Hermione now cautiously touched the locket. It was cold as ice, as though it had just been taken out of the freezer. There was nothing to suggest that just a quarter of an hour before, it had been hot as hell. Hermione peered at it in the darkness, lit only by the light of her wand. Outwardly, there was no change in it but on closer inspection, the metal decidedly looked colder and eviler, Hermione thought. She shuddered, and then tucked it inside her shirt. She now looked around for a potential path towards the Hogwarts Grounds. All around, the trees loomed up, tall, dark and menacing and identical to each other. Every where, Hermione saw the same image of tall, grey-black tress fading away into the darkness.
'Ron would have probably run in the first direction he saw,' the thought came unbidden to her mind. Then almost automatically she thought, 'And I would have told him, "Don't be stupid Ron', use the Four-Point Spell!" Then she slapped her head, of course the direction indicating spell would come in handy now! What had happened to her brains! As she did the Four-Point spell, her wand spun in her hand, until finally coming to rest, pointing out the north direction to her. That meant that she was in the south-east part of the Forest. She looked carefully at the paths, leading away through the Forest and decided to take the one on her left; it looked much better than the others anyway. She walked cautiously, the leaves and twigs crunching below her feet, trying not to wince as the thorns and brambles brushed against her skin. She jumped at any sound she heard, as she imagined it to be the sound of some terrible monster. The moonlight could be seen only in patches through the trees, such was the density of the greenery around her, though it looked more black than green in the darkness of the night. Eventually, she relaxed as she got accustomed to the nightly sounds of the creatures of the forest. She hoped that she was going in the right direction because she did not fancy meeting any of the Forest's inhabitants. Everything was quite now, other than a rustling sound here and there, some whining sounds and her own heart hammering madly in her chest and the crunching sounds of the leaves.
For how long she carried on walking like this she really didn't know, as she did not have her watch with her. For her it felt like an eternity, walking in the eerie darkness of the forest, feeling totally alone, hoping that she was going in the right direction, praying that she wouldn't meet anything in the forest. However, after about an hour, though it felt much longer to her, she had to admit that she was lost. She wondered whether she was going around in circles because everything looked the same to her. And she was tiring very quickly. Her throat was parched with thirst, her stomach grumbling for food. The clothes which Dumbledore had patched up for her were again torn in places, her shoes worn out; her hair had become a wild, tangled mess. All in all she looked like some wild cave-girl.
Finally, she sat down at the base of a tree and once again put her head on her knees. Her head was also pounding due to all the stress it had gone through recently. As she was thinking about how much she wished for a nice, cool drink right now, she felt a weird sensation on her hand, and it was moving forward, from her hand towards her elbow. She looked at her hand and shrieked loudly, quickly standing up. She shook her hand vigorously and then looked at the thing which had fallen down from her hand. It was hairy, little spider, now making its way towards a tree. The sight of the spider sent shock-waves throughout her body. It was not the spider which scared her but the implications of seeing it there. She waved her wand around the area, so that the wand light made an arc through the darkness.
For a while, she saw nothing and she sighed in relief. But then she saw it, the dark thing line of spiders, weaving their way through the wilderness.
"Oh damn," she cursed. How could she have been so stupid as to walk right into Aragog's lair? She now felt really panicky; she had heard so many things about Hagrid's hairy spider friend from her two best friends, especially Ron, that she had thanked herself that she had never met him. She flashed her wand at the spiders again; they seemed to be going in a certain direction. That was all she needed to rush away in the opposite direction. She ran as fast as she could, crashing through the trees and bushes, forgetting her thirst and hunger momentarily, all she wanted was to get away from the lair before some of the bigger spiders detected her presence.
Later, she would say that it was the height of her stupidity. She now had no sense of direction whatsoever and was blindly running across one tree to the other, till finally, exhausted; she fell down on the soft, brown earth which was now devoid of any leaves. For a moment she just lay, face down in the mud, panting with exertion. Then, coughing, due to the dust that had gone in, she got up. She tried to cast the water spell now but could only gasp out the incantation, which was of course ineffective.
"Aguamenti," she said again, this time with more clarity, now that her head was clearer and she had caught her breath. Clear water rushed out and she pointed her wand at her face. She gulped down the water, which felt wonderful to her parched throat. Then she blinked, as the spell was extinguished. She looked around herself; she had run into a sort of clearing in the forest. The clearing was devoid any of the huge, looming trees that filled most of the forest. There were only a few bushes here and there.
She had just thought that the clearing was better than being in Aragog's lair, when she heard a heard a howl nearby which made her blood freeze. Her wand fell down, as she got up in alarm. As she leaned down to pick it up, something came running into the clearing, its yellow eyes glowing. Hermione froze, her mouth opened in a silent scream as she gazed at the creature, which she had seen only once in her life.
Moony, the werewolf gazed at her, its yellow eyes hungrily looking at her.
"Foodsss, real good foods for us," it thought, its mouth watering already. Hermione was paralyzed with shock, her mind numb with fear. She could see no hope for herself now; she was just going to die or if she survived, it would be worse.
Moony growled hungrily, now moving forward stealthily, until it was halfway towards her. Its silent movement stirred her now into action. She took a step back, still trembling horribly. As the werewolf now prepared to leap at her, she shouted the first spell that came into her mind at that moment: The Stinging Hex. It went and hit the werewolf right in the middle. As the werewolf stopped and howled in pain, Hermione whirled around and ran as fast as she could in the opposite direction. However the werewolf got up instantly and started running after her. She pirouetted and faced it once again, breathing heavily.
Now it was clear it wanted to get its game as fast as possible. She shrieked as it leaped towards her, getting out of the way, just in time. The werewolf's jump had taken it crashing through the trees and yet it was up in an instant. But that instant was enough for Hermione to sprint away, as fast as she could in the opposite direction. She was halfway through the clearing when the werewolf started running towards her. Yet, her speed was no match for its speed and it quickly covered up the distance between them. She fired another hex at it but it must have only grazed it as the werewolf only stopped momentarily before continuing the chase.
'The trees, if only I can reach and climb one of them…' she thought desperately. However, a snarl from the werewolf made her turn around once again. It was now only five paces away from her. She pointed her wand at it, took careful aim and cried out the Stunning Spell. Then without looking whether the spell had hit its target or not, she ran towards the trees. Apparently her spell had missed its mark, as she could hear the werewolf hot on her trail. She could hear it behind her, breathing heavily.
She had now reached the trees and was just thinking which one would be the easiest to climb when her foot caught in one of the long, hard roots and she fell down roughly on the ground. She looked back; the werewolf was looking triumphantly at her, its eyes blazing. Then, quickly it jumped. She screamed her loudest scream and covered her head by her hand, anticipating its sharp, pointy teeth on her hand any moment.
But the blow never came. For another animal had jumped, at the same instant on the werewolf. She looked up and stared at the battle now going on before her. A huge, white stag had leapt at the werewolf and was now fighting furiously with it, the werewolf snarling angrily. Before long, a huge black dog also came; panting heavily and it joined the fray. She gazed at the battle raging on between the three of them, mesmerized until she felt something slither on her toe. Looking down, she was surprised to find a dark colored rat, bigger than most. And as she looked down curiously, it bit her.
"OUCH" she cried out and shook her leg to free it of the rat, but found that it was already gambling along to watch as the dog and the stag controlled the angry werewolf.
Hermione then realized that the rat had been trying to tell her to get a move on and run away. And she did just that, running away in the direction that the three Animagi had come from. As she kept running, she realized that she knew the path; Hagrid had taken them walking along this path many times. It would now just be a twenty minute walk and she would be out of the dreaded forest. But she was too nervous and too full of energy to walk, so she kept running. She saw the sky first; it was just getting lighter though the moon had not waned.
As she charged out of the forest, still running till she was a good two-three feet away from it, she felt as though she had freed herself from some invisible ropes which had bounded her down. She very much wanted to sit down for a while as each and every particle of her body cried out for rest. Yet she did not stop and kept on going till she reached the Entrance Hall. She was just thinking of sitting down there, when she heard voices coming towards her. She quickly changed her path and took the best short cuts she knew towards the Gryffindor common room. The Fat Lady gaped at her when she stumbled, wearily in front of her and muttered the password.
"Where have you been, young lady?" she said half-scolding, half kindly. Hermione shook her head and climbed through the portrait hole. Then she dragged herself up to her dormitory where she crashed into her own bed.
