He cherished for a moment all the time he had spent at Hogwarts. This would be the golden period in his life, he thought. 'First thing's first,' thought James, 'I have to impress Evans this year." His mind went back to the middle of last year, his 6th year, to one of the innumerable times when beautiful Lily Evans had screamed her head out at him.
but again...he thot that he reacted in the best way possible....snivellus had insulted him yet again....so he had cursed him in the worst possible manner....it was unfortunate that lily had to pass through the corridors at that moment....
Shaking his head and laughing slightly at the memory, James's mouth curved into a grin as he spotted a familiar mob of shoulder length black hair and mischevious midnight blue eyes over by the back of the train.
"Hey Padfoot!" he yelled, beckoning to one of his best friends.
''yeah prongs?'' ,james's best buddy yelled back....
''do you see what i see? what say ? shall we have some fun??'' james asked...
''nope....dont wanna spoil my day back to hogwarts by luking at snivellus...maybe some other time. we are gona have loads of time with us...'', sirius said with a mischevious grin...
"I know mate, but whoa it's our last year, can't believe it," answered James, a hint of sadness.
"Yeah well we'll make it the best," vowed Sirius, with a gran thumbs-up gesture. "By the way, you seen Remus?"
"Nope, not yet," replied James, shaking his head, "Hey, there's Wormtail!"
"I still can't believe you've been made Head Boy Prongs! I thought for sure that Moony would get the badge!" exclaimed a short pudgy boy with reverential eyes, after he had waddled over to the two friends.
James grinned proudly, "Thanks Wormtail, but you're right. Remus deserved it more than I did."
"Hey, Remus would be happy for you," Sirius comforted, "Besides, when one of us earns something, it's practically like we all earned it."
The three friends beamed as they noticed Moony walk towards them from the back of the train silently. Even from the distance, dark circles were clearly visible underneath his eyelids, casting a dark shadow over the cheerful group.
Moony slowly approached the group , the dark circles under his eyes clearly indicating that a full moon had just passed.
"James...good one there huh..!!?? Head boy..!!" said Remus.
"Thanks Moony..." said James.Then a sudden thought struck him and him face lit up.
"Hey Moony, if you wanted...I could ask Dumbledore for you to become Heady Boy instead-" James started before was abruptly cut off by Moony.
"You'll do no such thing. Do you think I'm not happy for you?"
"No Moony i'm sure you are...!! and as padfoot so rightly pointed out when one of us earns something, it's practically like we all earned it." said James.
"Well..sometimes padfoot also talks sensible things..!!"grinned Remus,earing a smack and and a "Hey..!! that is so not true..!!" from Sirius.
remus shrugged and said, "well, let's get on the train. james wouldn't want to miss his first day as a headboy!" he winked at james mischievously and hi-fived sirius, who laughed with him.
"what happened?" said james, confused.
"what happened?" said sirius mocking him and then asked him, "don't you know who is the head girl? you are gonna have duties with her!"
"And Moonyyyy..!!! you're forgetting something else...!!!" wined sirius like his animagus form.
"Too rite you are padfoot...of course dear jaime here is gonna have to share a dorm with her as well..!!!!" said Remus and winked at James.
"Well..then may be in a month or two when you'll feel like telling who she is..." scowled James and went to search a compartment.
"Well u'll find out for yourself James..are might i say you are going to love it..!!" said Sirus,following him.
Meanwhile....
"WHAT??!!" shrieked Lily, "Remus is not Headboy? Tell me you're kidding, Alice!"
"Nope," said Lily's long term best friend and fellow Gryffindor 7th year, Alice Prewett, who exchanged a wink and smirk with her boyfriend of two years, Frank Longbottom, "He told me himself, and he also told me who the head boy is." She shook her head and smiled when Lily demanded to know who it was.
"You'll find out yourself soon, Lillykins," Alice said with a grin.
Having finally found a compartment to themselves,the mauranders as they so fondly called themselves made themselves comfortable.
"Moony..do u realise what this means.?" asked Sirius.
"What .?" asked Remus puzzled.
"This." said Sirius pointing an accusing finger at the newly pinned badge on the front of James' robes.
When nobody said anything,Sirius sat upstraight and said in a tone as he was making them understand that two and two make four "This means there will be no maurander pranks this year..!!!"whined Sirius.
Remus rolled his eyes, Peter looked confused, and James said seriously, "No more Marauder pranks? Are you kidding???! Of course there are going to be pranks this year, you idiot. It's our last year! We have to do something big, something that will ensure that us Marauders will never be forgotten!"
"In case you're forgetting, Prongs, you're Head Boy this year, so you'll have to be responsible. And that means you have to take points off of us if we do pranks.......or possibly give us detentions," said Remus matter of factly.
"are you kidding? i'm not gonna go around taking points or giving out detentions..." said James.
"but you cannot afford to do any pranks either... you are the headboy!" said Remus n Sirius nodded.
"correction: i cannot afford to be caught while doing anything wrong!" said James with an evil smile. "well, if you'll excuse me now, i have to go to the prefects' n headboys' compartment... i have duties, you know... responsibilities!" he added n went out with the same evil grin on his face. he was so curious to know who this new head-girl was...
"I'll come with you, as I too am a prefect," Remus said, standing up and following James out the door. Sirius and Peter were left alone to amuse themselves until their other two friends returned.
Lily tapped her foot impatiently, her face set in a scowl and trying to avoid the curious glances of the new prefects. The new Head Boy was late -- she wondered who it was. It had to be someone who had no sense of time and duty. How dare he be late to his first meeting? If he didn't come in another two minutes, she would start the meeting herself. She could affort to lost any more time. But just then, the compartment door opened and she gasped as she saw who it was.
lily couldnt believe what she saw james potter was the head boy how could this happen she thought to herself.
the world was completly upside down for her she absolutly detested this guy and now she was supposed to work with him.
she thought to herself maybe he had changed and then cursedherself for even bringing that thoght into her mind. Then with a sigh she said"lets begin this meeting"
Both Lily and James started the meeting, issued 'patrolling the corridors' schedules, read the rules for taking off points, and ended the meeting one hour later by Lily stating, "The first official meeting will be tomorrow at 5 PM in Professor McGonagall's classroom. Alright then, meeting adjourned!"
"So....Lilykins!" James said when they were alone, winking at her, "You know.....we do have to plan the Hogsmeade trips and I was thinking....one month from now sounds delightful, and I am free, so...."
"First of all, Potter," Lily snapped, whirling around to face him, "I am not going out with you! Alright? So leave me alone! And second of all, we still have to meet with Professor Dumbledore before planning anything!" With that, she flipped her hair and left the compartment with her nose in the air.
"ooh i love when she does that" said james with a chuckle.
"james will you stop doing that you are head boy now you have to be serious with your job and you have to respect others" said remus
ahh mooney wud you quit it its our last year in Hogwarts I am just enjoyin myself wud you relax a bit be like me and padfoot"
"yeah whatever i cant relax bcoz the full moon is in 4 days i hope everything goes well now that i am a prefect" said lupin with a deep sigh"
come on now we will headoff to our other friends they must be waiting for us" said james with a playful tone.
"Aargh! He drives me so crazy!" Lily growled as she dropped to her seat back in her own compartment. Alice looked up from the wizard's chess game she was playing with their other best friend, Mary MacDonald, and raised her eyebrows.
"Now what happened, Lills?" Mary asked, winking at Alice. Mary, a small plump girl with brown hair and bronze eyes, was a Half Blood and also a seventh year Gryffindor. She, Lily, and Alice were the best of friends since their first year, and knew everything about each other.
"uhh that james potter makes me so crazy. who made him the head boy something is definitely wrong. he makes my blood boil. He is so incompetent. Firstly he was late for the meeting and then then he was flirting with me and also he wasn't at all sorry for his delay" lily growled.
"its ok just don't pay him any attention"mary said
"how am i gonna do that I am head girl and we have to make decisions together" lily said
"just talk about work and then ignore him" said alice with a warm smile on her face her .
and with this lily's mood completely changed
"Prongs, I think you should be a bit different around Lily this year," Remus said as they entered their own compartment. Sirius and Peter looked up.
"Different? Why does he have to be any different?" Sirius asked incredulously, "It's Evans's loss if she doesn't like him."
"Jee, thanks Padfoot," James said wryly, sighing as he flopped onto his seat, "But what do I do Remus? She hates the sight of me!"
"Deflate your head a bit," Remus offered, "Stop ruffling your hair when you're around her, stop picking on the Slytherins when you see her, especially leave Snape alone, etc etc..." When he saw James's expressions, Remus said, "Come on James, Snape is Lily's best friend! She's not going to give you a chance if you constantly pick on him."
"Really?" James asked despondently, sighing.
"Yes, really" replied Remus, in a tone of an exhausted parent. The friends then settled into comfortable conversations about the upcoming year. James however, was silently thinking that maybe Remus was right, maybe he did need to change, for Lily to notice him. That thought set his resolve.
After some hours, the sky outside turned dark and the Hogwarts Express began its entrance into Hogsmeade Village. A voice rang out through the train telling everyone that in five to ten minutes, the train would stop. The Marauders quickly began to change into their robes and pack all the lunch cart treats away. Ignoring Sirius's snickers, James pinned his Head Boy pin onto his robes and told his friends, "Well, I suppose I have to patrol the train corridors and make sure everyone's set."
"Ay ay, Captain, er - Head Boy!" Sirius said with a mock solute. James swiped at his head playfully but missed because Sirius dove to the floor in a fit of laughter. Shaking his head, he left the compartment to look for Lily.
Where is he?! Lily angrily thought to herself. Why would Professor Dumbledore do this to her. On top of dealing with NEWTS this year, she now had to deal with that rule breaking, prank loving , inconsiderate, obnoxious dimwit ....
"POTTER!!! Where have you been!!!? We're almost at the station and we still have final patrols to supervise plus get the first years together for the trip across the lake!" Lily all but screamed when she saw him walking down the corrider.
"Sorry Lily, I lost track of time. I can do the patrols if you like, while you organize the first years, so we can save some time." James said as sincerely as he could. The change of tactic took Lily off guard who had expected an off beat remark from Potter, after her tirade.
"Sure, that sounds good." Lily said uncertainly, as she gave a quizzical look as James walked down the corrider to supervise patrols.
Shrugging it off as nothing, she silently walked over to where all the first years were gathering; some nervously, others chit-chatting excitedly. Lily cleared her throat awkwardly to get their immediate attention.
But just then, Hagrid's loud booming voice broke through the crowd of first years and beckoned them to the long line of boats. Lily grinned as Hagrid waved at her and called out, "How r'ya Lily?"
"I'm fine Hagrid, hope you're alright? See you at the feast!" Lily shouted back. Hagrid waved and left with the children.
Through the crowd of older students, Lily spotted Severus, murmuing to his friends Avery and Nott. Her nose wrinkled as she saw Nott and Avery's sneers and leers at the younger girls. "They're disgusting," she thought, shaking her head, "What does Sev see in them?" Just then, Severus caught her eye and he reddened slightly, biting his lip before reluctantly turning his back to her. Lily sighed sadly but perked up as Alice and Mary came closer to her.
"Let's find a carriage, shall we?" Mary asked, linking her arms with Lily and Alice's.
Meanwhile, the little exchange between Lily and Snape did not go unnoticed. James, who was also heading towards the carriages with his friends, also noticed the reluctant exchange between the two, and made a mental note, to find out what that was about. As both Lily and James settled into their resepctive carriages with their friends, they both had the same thought, this was going to be a very interesting year.
"So, either of you have any idea about the big 'welcome back' prank we're going to do this year?" Sirius asked Remus and James. Peter usually did not have any ideas about any of the pranks. He only listened and volunteered to help out, so Sirius ignored him. But he didn't notice Peter's face darken when he ignored him.
"Can't," said James, pointing to his badge, "Remember?" As Remus nodded approvingly that James was taking his new responsibility seriously, Sirius's mouth dropped open in horror.
"Can't? Can't! What are you bloody talking about?" he yelped. James and Remus rolled their eyes and Sirius continued, "We've had a welcome back pranks since 2nd year every year! We can't stop now, not in our final year!"
"I've turned over a new leaf Sirius. I've decided to try to be good and responsible this year. Besides, I think we should retire the pranks. I think we've done everything that can possibly be done. We need to get serious now. This is our final year, we need to think about life after Hogwarts."
The friends all fell silent as there thoughts turned to the situation that the Wizarding World was facing. Peter's however were taking a very different turn from that of his friends.
He nervously rubbed his left shoulder and flushed when he found Remus's scrutinizing eyes on him. "Are you okay, Pete?" Remus asked with concern.
"Yes - yes I am," stuttered Peter, "I just hurt my shoulder over the summer but I'm fine now."
"You want me to take a look at it?" asked James, "I could heal it for you before we reach the school."
"No!" said Peter panicking, "I mean - I mean, no thank you. I'm fine."
"Ookay," said James, his eyebrows raised.
"I still think we should do a prank," Sirius whined from the corner.
"Alright Sirius, but nothing that will cause people too much humiliation. Just something for fun," said James.
"But how about Slytherins?" Sirius asked excitedly.
"Hmm...." said James, but when he saw Remus's raised eyebrows, sighed and replied, "Alright alright, no Slytherins."
"You guys suck," Sirius said.
"If you cared about me at all, you would understand," James replied in a very Remus like tone that immediately caused Sirius to shut up.
sirius was wounded, his best friend had stpd doing pranks just for a girl. he wondered whethr or not he wd gt james bk to his old self, where thy wd practise pranks on slytherines just for the fun of it! but sirius had respect for james and this is wt stpd him from saying much.

Eventually, the long procession of carriages reached the school and stopped in front of the large entrance door. It was opened by Professor McGonagall and she ushered them into the entrance hall.
"The Sorting Ceremony will start momentarily. Take your seats in the Great Hall and make yourselves look dignified and respectable for the first years," she said, her eyes falling on the ruffled looks of the Marauders and some other students. Sirius sniggered and James couldn't help but join in. Them, looking dignified and respectable? What a joke! Lily shot them an exasperated look and turned back to listen to Professor McGonagall with attentive eyes. Soon, they all went into the Great Hall and took their seats at their respective tables, waiting for the first years.
Slowly, the noise level in the Great Hall started to rise as more students filed in and took their places. James looked around and caught random conversations with "I hope Mc Gonagall is easy on us this year" and "I wonder what the Sorting Hat has to say this year". Soon enough however, much to Sirius' relief, for he was starving at this stage, the procession of first years made their way into the Hall, following an indomitable looking Professor Mc Gonagall, who held the Sorting Hat in her hands.
