Chapter-20

Gulaal had been packing some of her clothes in one of her bags. She looked ready to cry. Of course Gulaal was very happy for Roopa and she was glad that she would be able to spend some time with her family but it meant staying away from Kesar and Gulaal did not think that she would be able to do so, "teen hafte uske bina main kaise rahungi?lekin main kuch bol bhi tho nahi sakti.kya kahungi?sab ke saamne yeh tho nahi bol sakti na ki main Kesar ke bina nahi reh sakti", she thought with mounting frustration and threw the saree which she had in her hand on the bed carelessly. She sat down on the bed with a thud and tears started flowing freely. Just then the door opened and Kesar walked in closing the door behind him quietly. Gulaal looked at him with tears in her eyes and called out in a small voice "Kesar….."

Kesar folds his arms in a defensive mode and says petulantly, "tho tum mujhe chodkar jaa rahi ho". Gulaal tries to interrupt, "Kesar….." ,but Kesar doesn't give her the chance to talk and he continues "haan tum tho shaayad mere bina reh logi lekin mera kya?main kaise jee paaunga tumhare bina. Abhi- abhi tho maine pyaar ke ehsaas ko mehsoos kiya tha aur tabhi tum mujhse door jaa rahi ho". Gulaal rushes across and hugs him and says tearfully, "aisi baatein mat karo Kesar, main bhi kahaan reh paaungi tumhare bina.lekin main kya karun kaise keh sakti hoon ki mujhe nahi jaana.aakhir meri behen ki shaadi hai na Kesar".

Kesar who had been feeling very angry suddenly feels all his anger drain away and puts his arms around her, holding her tightly "mat jaao Gulaal.yeh ghar tumhare bina bahut soona ho jaayega.aur main tumhe dekhe bina nahi reh sakta". Gulaal forgets her own pain and tries to comfort him by saying ,"Kesar,tum aisa mat socho na.main hamesha ke liye thode hi jaa rahi hoon.bas teen hafton ki baat hai,woh tho bas aise hi nikal jaayenge.aur phir main kahin door tho nahi jaa rahi.tum jab chaho mujhse milne aa sakte ho na".

Kesar moves back and looks at her tearful face which now had a small shy smile. Kesar looked at her with mischief in his eyes "acha tho tum chahthi ho main roz koi na koi bahaana banaakar tumhaare ghar aaun tumse milne ke liye". Gulaal lifts up her eyes and nods her head silently and says hesitantly, "haan,ab tum hi tho keh rahe the na ki tum nahi reh sakte mujhe dekhe bina,isliye kaha warna mujhe koi problem nahi hai". Kesar laughs out loud "Gulaal,tum na bas bholi dikhti ho lekin ho nahi". Gulaal smiles back widely and they both forget their sorrow momentarily.

Kesar stops smiling and says in a serious tone, "Gulaal,main jald hi Motaba se baat karunga hamaare baare mein. Main jaanta hoon ki woh hamein apna aashirwaad zaroor denge.unhe yeh jaankar bahut khushi hogi ki tum hamesha isi ghar mein unki beti bankar rahogi aur phir tum kabhi mujhse peecha nahi chuda paaogi.tum jahaan jaaogi main tumhara peecha karta hua chala aaunga aur agar kisine kuch bola tho main sabke saamne haq se tumara haath thaam ke bolunga ki tum meri patni ho". Gulaal gives him a dreamy smile and mutters "patni". Kesar holds her face and says affectionately, "haan Gulaal, patni.main tumse shaadi karna chahtha hoon Gulaal.tumhare saath apni poori zindagi guzaarna chahtha hoon.apna har sukh,dukh apni har choti badi khushi tumhare saath baantna chahtha hoon. Gulaal,kya tum meri patni banogi?"

Gulaal looks at him wide-eyed and smiles softly. She nods shyly and falls into his arms. They both feel the happiness envelop them. Suddenly Gulaal pulls back with a serious expression on her face "lekin Kesar,kya hum yeh baat thode dinon ke baad Motaba ko bataayein?ghar mein abhi abhi sab ek bahut bade sadme se ubhar paaye hain.shaayad humein thoda aur intezaar karna chahiye".

Kesar: "mujhe tho lagta hai ki is baat se sab ko khushi milegi.lekin tum kehti ho tho main wait kar leta hoon.lekin sirf tumhaare waapis aane tak.jaise hi tum apni behen ki shaadi ke baad ghar aaogi bas main Motaba ke saamne apni baat rakh doonga.theek hai". Gulaal smiles at his impatience "haan baba theek hai,jaisi tumhari marzi.ab jaldi se meri help kar do.mujhe kitchen mein bahut saara kaam baaki hai".

Kesar helps her in the packing and when it is over complains,"Gulaal yeh tum hamesha mujhse help leti rehti ho lekin badle mein mujhe tho kuch bhi nahi milta yaar.at least ek chota sa…..". Gulaal doesn't let him complete the sentence instead she says "kya Kesar chota sa I love you,woh tho tum bhool hi jaao.main nahi bolne waali" and leaves the room before he could get a hold of her. Kesar is amazed at her quick thinking. He had been about to ask her for a kiss but she repeated his own dialogue from the kitchen. He laughs out muttering "Kesar beta,tu tho gaya kaam se.yeh tho tujhse bhi ek kadam aage nikli".

Soon it is evening and Revji and Poonam decide to take leave "Soma,bahut dinon ke baad itna samay saath guzaara.bahut acha laga.puraani yaadein taaza ho gayi.aur samay kaise guzar gaya patha hi nahi chala.par ab ghar jaana chahiye.aaj Yogesh bhi kaam ke silsile mein baahar gaya hua hai aur Roopa akeli hai aur woh besabri se apni didi ka intezaar kar rahi hogi".

Motaba: "haan Revji tumne theek kaha. Aaj sach mein bade dinon baad dil khush hua hai.puraani baaton ko yaad karte waqt ka patha hi nahi chala.hamein aise hi milte rehna chahiye.aur haan agar shaadi mein kisi bhi tarah ki madadh ki zaroorat ho tho batha denaa.hichkichana math".

Gulaal takes the blessings of Motaba, Panba,Jamna Kaki and Giga Kaka. Revji,Poonam and Gulaal step out of the house and are about to get into the car. Gulaal keeps looking around for Kesar who she finds is suddenly missing. She did not want to go without saying goodbye to Kesar. Suddenly she thinks of something, "baapji main apne kamre mein kuch bhool aayi hoon.bas abhi leke aati hoon". She rushes off upstairs to the roof top and finds Kesar standing there. She calls out "Kesar,tum yahaan kya kar rahe ho?main tumhe neeche doondh rahi thi.main jaa rahi hoon aur tum mujhe bye bolne nahi aaye". Kesar turns around and looks into her eyes with sadness "woh…main tumhe jaate hue nahi dekh sakta.isliye". Gulaal feels Kesar's pain as if it is her own and runs to him. She shyly holds his face in her hands and looks into his eyes "I love you Kesar", she gives him a quick peck on the lips and runs off downstairs. Kesar is stunned and he looks on with a surprised smile as happiness fills his heart. He watches as Gulaal looks up at him while getting in the car and he waves slowly. She silently nods her head and gets into the car. Kesar feels as if a part of him was going away with Gulaal but he knew that this was only a temporary separation and of course he would see her tomorrow in the office. That thought gave him comfort as he walked towards his room.

It was night time and Talli decided to try her luck by taking dinner to Dushyant. Through out the day Dushyant had refused to see her or speak to her and this had hurt her a lot. She had made his favourite sabji specially for him taking care to put less oil and spice and thinks with a smile,"maine Dushyantji ki fav alugobi sabji banayi hai.shaayad ise dekhkar unka jo gussa hai woh kam ho jaaye aur main unse pooch bhi loongi ki maine aisi kaun si galti kar di jiski wajah se woh mujhse itne naaraz hain". Talli goes to his room with a smile but it disappears as soon as she sees Jamna Kaki come out with a tray full of empty dishes. She looks at Talli and the tray in her hand "arre beta,usne tho kha liya.patha nahi aaj woh zid kar raha tha ki mere haath ka bana khana hi khaayega.isliye main khud aa gayi.agar mujhe patha hota ki tu kuch banaane waali hai tho main pehle hi tujhse keh deti". Talli forces a smile on her face "nahi,koi baat nahi.yeh main waapis le jaati hoon.aap woh tray bhi mujhe de dijiye.waise bhi kitchen mein hi jaa rahi hoon tho main rakh doongi". "theek hai beta.yeh lo.",Jamna Kaki gives her the empty tray and goes off.

Talli looks at the closed door and can't stop the tears from flowing down her face ,"Dushyantji aap aisa kyun behave kar rahe hain mere saath.maine kya kiya hai?mujhe tho kuch samajh nahi aa raha hai". Dushyant had heard the whole conversation between Talli and his mother and muttered to himself "Talliji main jaanta hoon ki main aap ko bahut dukh pahuncha raha hoon.lekin aap ke liye yehi acha hai.mujhe maaf kar dijiye."

Sudha had seen the interaction between Talli and her mother in law. She notices Talli's tears and it pains her to see Talli in so much pain. She thinks to herself "maine kitna samjhaaya ise lekin woh maan hi nahi rahi thi. mujhe pehle se hi patha tha ki Dushyantji ke saath yeh badthi dosti Talli ko zaroor dukh pahunchayegi.main abhi jaake Panba se baat karti hoon isse pehle ki baat aur badh jaaye". Sudha goes to Panba's room with a look of determination on her face.

Panba had been resting after a very busy day when Sudha just bursts into her room.

Panba: "arre Sudha,kya hua itni pareshaan kyun lag rahi ho?"

Sudha: "panba main aapse Talli aur Kesar ke baare mein baat karne aayi hoon.mujhe patha hai ki shaayad yeh baat karne ka sahi samay nahi hai.lekin main aur intezaar nahi kar sakti.main yeh jaanana chahthi hoon ki kya aap ne kuch faisla liya hai is bare mein".

Panba sighs and says in a low tone: "Sudha,main is baare mein abhi nahi soch sakti."

Sudha persists "nahi Panba,main samajh sakti hoon.lekin yeh meri behen ki zindagi ka sawaal hai aur main is maamle mein laaparwaah nahi ho sakti".

Panba: "theek hai.agar tumhe jaanana hi hai beta tho sun lo Maine is bare mein kuch socha hi nahi hai. aur sach kahoon tho Vasant ki maut ne mujhe meri galti ka ehsaas karaa diya hai. meri zidd ki wajah se maine apne ek bte ko kho diya ab main aisa kuch nahi karna chahti jis se main apne doosre bte ko bhi kho doon".

Sudha: "par Panba aap ne tho mujhse vaada…….".

Panba: "haan beta main jaanti hoon.main Kesar se is bare mein baat karungi lekin main us par apna faisla nahi thopoongi.main uski marzi ke khilaaf kuch nahi karungi".

Sudha angrily asks: "lekin Panba agar uski pasand Gulaal hui tho, tab aap kya karengi?kya aap Gulaal ko Kesar ki patni ke roop mein sweekar karengi?"

Panba thinks for a moment with a frown on her face: "haan".

Sudha is stunned by Panba's response and replies edgily, "tab tho mera aap se baat karna bilkul bekaar hai na Panba.aap aaram kar lijiye main chalti hoon". And with this Sudha leaves the room. Panba tries to stop her but controls herself thinking "kya kahungi usse.sach hi tho keh rahi hai.maine use bhi tho dhokha diya hai. uska mujhse naaraaz hona galat nahi hai.lekin kya karun main Kesar ko kisi bhi haal mein nahi khona chahthi."

On the other hand Sudha thinks to herself "ab tho mujhe hi kuch sochna padega,nahi tho Talli kabhi Kesar ki patni nahi ban paayegi.mujhe Gulaal se koi problem nahi hai.lekin agar woh Talli ke raaste mein rukaawat banti hai tho main har mumkin koshish karungi ki us pathar ko hamesha ke liye raaste se hataa doon".

Unaware of all the drama happening Gulaal is blissfully happy in her room talking to Roopa. Roopa's constant chatter and excitement brings a smile to her face "arre bas, bas,thoda saans tho le.main ab kuch dinon ke liye yahi hoon na tho aaram se baat kar sakte hain". Roopa hugs her and says "main jaanti hoon didi.lekin kitne din ho gaye aap se baat kiye hue.main bahut khush hoon didi ki aap mere saath rahengi meri shaadi tak.patha nahi phir kabhi aisa mauka mile ya na mile". Gulaal gets emotional and replies "dekho tho ab tum khud ro do gi aur mujhe bhi rulaa dogi.chal jaldi se yeh bataa ki tu sach mein is rishte se khush hai na.agar tere mann koi bhi doubt hai tho batha de…." Roopa interrupts "nahi didi,main sach mein bahut khush hoon.bas yahi ek dukh hai ki shaadi ke baad mujhe aap sab se door jaana padega". Gulaal looks at her and says wistfully "lekin Roopa, agar humsafar sacha ho tho parivaar se door rehke bhi unki kami kabhi mehsoos nahi hogi". Roopa is about to ask her something when Gulaal's phone rings. Gulaal looks at it, sees the name and a wide smile spreads across her face "Roopa mujhe yeh call lena padega.bahut zaroori hai.main tujhse kal baat karungi",Gulaal leaves the room in a hurry leaving Roopa to wonder as to whose call it was that brought a sparkle in her eyes and a wide bright smile that she had seldom seen on her sister's beautiful face.
