Chapter 21

Gulaal picks up the call as soon as she leaves the room, "Kesar tumne kitni der kardi bulaane mein.main kab se wait kar rahi thi tumhare call ka". Kesar laughs and replies "main tumhe call karne waala tha ki tabhi Motaba ne mujhe bulaa liya kisi kaam ke silsile mein.abhi tak unhi ke saath tha.isliye late ho gaya.ab maaf bhi kardo". Gulaal smiles, "theek hai.maaf kiya".

Kesar: "acha ab yeh bataao ki tum kya kar rahi thi? mere baare mein soch rahi thi na".

Gulaal: "dhat.main tumhaare baare mein kyun sochungi?main tho bahut busy thi Roopa se baat karne mein".

Kesar: "acha,busy thi. haan isliye tho mere call ka itni besabri se wait kar rahi thi",Gulaal is embarrassed but before she could say anything Kesar continues "chalo yeh batao kal ke interview ke liye tum tayyar ho na".

Gulaal is touched by his concern: "haan Kesar main poori tarah se tayyar hoon.tum bilkul chintha mat karo".

Kesar: "arre mujhe koi chinta nahi hai kyunki mujhe yeh yakeen hai ki jis tarah se tumne mujhpar jaadoo kar diya usi tarah tum sab interviewers ko bhi flat kar dogi".

Gulaal blushes: "Kesar…..tum bhi na".

They continue talking until the wee hours of the morning. Gulaal had no idea when sleep overtook her and she slept with the phone still in her hand. Kesar understood that Gulaal had fallen asleep. He whispered a good night, gave her a small kiss over the phone and with a peaceful smile on his face, closed his eyes and fell asleep.

In the morning when Gulaal woke up, she had a small smile on her face and then she realized that her phone is still in her hand. "kab aankh lag gayi.patha hi nahi chala". She looked at the time and rushes off to get ready. She had to reach the office by 9. She takes the blessings of Revji and Poonam and Yogesh drops her off at the office. Gulaal walks in haste and finds that some of the candidates are already waiting. She gives her name to the receptionist who notes it down and asks her to wait for her turn. She keeps looking around for a glimpse of Kesar and soon finds him coming towards the place where she is waiting. She smiles but he does not look at her at all. Kesar comes to the receptionist, asks for a file and tells her something. After that he just walks off without even sparing a glance in her direction. Gulaal is highly surprised and slightly hurt by his behaviour but before she could think anymore she overhears a conversation between two girls sitting behind her.

1^st girl: "woh kaun tha?kaafi handsome hai.chalo agar yahan naukri mil gayi tho timepass tho ho hi jaayega".

2^nd girl: "arre aisa sochna bhi math.woh Mr.Kesar Patel hain.agar tum yahan job karogi tho woh tumhare boss honge.samjhi".

1^st girl: "tho aur bhi acha hai na.boss ko pata liya tho office mein aasani ho jaayegi aur kya patha Mrs.Kesar ban ne ka chance mil jaaye".

Gulaal hears their quiet laughter but she is not amused at all. Her nails were digging into her arms and she really wanted to yell out that Kesar is hers. Suddenly the receptionist calls out to her and she comes back to reality. She looks at her arm which is now hurting and is surprised by her possessiveness. She goes to the receptionist who gives her a file which she had forgotten to give before. She goes to her place and sits down with a thud.Her mood undergoes a complete change.she had been happy and excited when she entered the office but now she is feeling frustrated and hurt. Firstly Kesar did not even look at her and now the girls talking about her Kesar-all of it just irritated her. She quickly opens the file and there is nothing inside except for a few blank pages and she is just about to tell the receptionist that she has made a mistake when she she comes across a small card with a cute teddy bear on it wishing her luck. She smiles and opens the card. And inside there's a small message in a familiar handwriting

"Gulaal,kal raat ko kehna bhool gaya tha "Best of Luck".main jaantha hoon tumhe iski zaroorat nahi hai.par phir bhi rakh lo.arre kuch aur kehna tha mujhe…kya tha woh…haan yaad aaya…. Love you Gulaal".

The small smile on Gulaal's face just widens as she finishes reading the card. She quickly controls her self and looks forward but is not able to stop smiling at all. Kesar peeks out from his cabin and the smile on Gulaal's face fills him with joy.

The card had improved Gulaal's mood and confidence and the interview goes off without a hitch. She is very sure that she has done well and with that satisfaction she comes out of the cabin. She tries to look for Kesar and finds him very busy in work with some other people. So she thinks it best not to disturb him and decides to go without meeting him. As she is stepping outside the office she gets a text on her cell. It is Kesar's asking her to come to the basement car park. She smiles excitedly and rushes off to the basement. Reaching there she finds it quite lonely and gets a little scared and tries to call Kesar but is not able to get him as the signal is off. She decides to go back upstairs and wait for him. As she is just about to get into the lift a hand holds her arm and pulls her back. She looks back and is relieved to see the smiling face of Kesar.

Gulaal:"tumne tho mujhe dara hi diyaa Kesar".

Kesar: "woh aane mein der ho gayi.sorry".

Gulaa: "main tumse bahut naaraz hoon Kesar.tumne tho meri taraf dekha bhi nahi".

Kesar: "haan I know lekin main nahi chahtha tha ki kisiko bhi yeh lage ki tumhe naukri isliye mili hai kyunki tum mujhe jaanti ho ya tum hamaare parivaar se ho.isliye mujhe aise pesh aana pada.acha ab yeh bataao kaisa tha interview". Gulaal shares the details of the interview with him and her excitement brings a smile on his face.

Kesar: "main tumhare liye bahut khush hoon Gulaal.mujhe lagta hai ki tumhe yeh naukri zaroor milegi.acha ek baar Motaba ko bhi call kar lena.woh bhi jaanana chahenge ki aakhir tumne kis tarah se interview lene waalon ko flat kar diya".

Gulaal hits him playfully and says "kesar,tum na bilkul nahi sudhroge.acha ab mujhe jaana hoga.maine Roopa se vaada kiya hai ki main uske saath dopahar ko shopping ke liye chalungi.tho jaldi ghar pahunchana hoga". Kesar pulls her close in a loose hug and says in a low tone, "main tumse milne ke liye kaam chodkar,sab se jhoot bol kar aaya hoon aur tum itni jaldi jaane ki baat kar rahi hoon. Thodi der aur ruk jaao na Gulaal".

Gulaal: "Kesar,chodo na mujhe.yahaan koi aa jaayega phir tumhe problem ho jaayegi. Main tumse baad mein zaroor milungi.lekin ab mujhe jaane do please". Kesar did not want to let her go anywhere but he realizes that probably Gulaal is right, so inspite of his desire to have her close to him, he leaves her, "theek hai,abhi tho main chod deta hoon lekin shaadi ke baad yeh sab bahaane nahi chalenge.main abhi se keh deta hoon".

They both get into the lift and as it is about reach its destination Kesar holds her chin and makes her look up into his eyes. He slowly kisses her forehead and says, "ab jaldi se jaao before I change my mind". Gulaal gives him a dazzling smile and as the lift opens she gets out and waves at him. He smiles at her as the lift closes.

Meanwhile at home Talli is in her room thinking about Dushyant's sudden change in behaviour towards her.

Flash back

Dushyant:"ab aap jaayiye Talliji. Aur kitni takleef uthayengi.aur agar mujhe kuch chaahiye hoga tho main kisiko bulaa loonga."

"nahi,main aapse baat nahi kar paaunga aur yeh acha bhi nahi lagta ki aap hamesha sirf meri dekhbaal karti rahein".

Present

Talii wipes away the tears fom her face, "yahaan baithkar sochte aur rothe rehne se kuch nahi hoga. Mujhe Dushyantji se jaa kar poochna hi hoga ki aakhir unki problem kya hai mujhse. Talli goes to Dushyant's room and enters without knocking. Dushyant who had been reading a book is shocked to see Talli so agitated and is about to ask her the reason when suddenly she starts talking or rather screaming "Dushyantji aakhir aapki problem kya hai?aap mujhe is tarah se avoid kyun kar rahe hain?agar meri koi baat aap ko buri lagi ho tho bol dijiye aur baat ko khatam kar dijiye.lekin is tarah se aap mujhse kate kate rehte hain tho main bahut hurt feel karti hoon",and to Dushyant's surprise bursts into tears. He gets up from the bed and quickly goes over to console her "Talliji,please aap royiye math.please bandh kijiye rona". His calm voice makes Talli even sadder and her sobs just become more intense. Dushyant hesitantly puts his hand on her shoulder and pats her gently to calm her down. And to Dushyant's utter surprise she just clings to him and starts muttering, "aap mujhse baat nahi karte tho mujhe bilkul acha nahi lagta.aisa lagta hai ki duniya ki saari khushiyaan mujhse rooth gayi hon.please aap mujhe bataaiye ki meri galti kya hai taaki main aage se aisi galti na karoon". Dushyant is stunned for a moment, then he comes back to reality, gently holds her back and makes her sit on the bed "Talliji, aap ki koi galti nahi hai.aap tho bahut achi hain.galti meri hi hai.mujhe pehle se hi aap se door rehna chahiya tha.aap ki vacation chal rahi aur aap yahaan isliye aayi hain taaki aap enjoy kar sake.lekin jab se main bimaar hua hoon tab se aap ka poora waqt meri dekhbaal mein hi kat raha hai.yeh mujhe bilkul acha nahi lagta".

Talli looks at him with tears in her eyes and replies "lekin aap ko aisa kyun lag raha hai ki main yeh majboori mein kar rahi hoon.main yeh sab isliye kar rahi hoon kyunki mujhe aap ka saath acha lagta hai aur…..", before she could say anything Dushyant interrupts "yehi tho main nahi chahtha Talliji.aap mere baare mein kuch nahi jaanti phir bhi aapka mujhse yeh lagaav mujhe samajh nahi aata".

"aap ke baare mein main itna tho jaan gayi hoon ki aap ab bhi apne ateet mein jee rahe hain. aap apni zindagi mein khushi tho paana chaahthe hain lekin jab woh aapke saamne hoti hai tho usse door bhaagthe hain. Aur yeh mat samajhiye ki yeh meri naadani hai.main bahut soch samajh kar hi bol rahi hoon.aur yeh aap ko sochna hai ki aap apni zindagi mein kya chahthe hain", Talli speaks her mind and walks out with her head held high leaving Dushyant stunned and confused.

Gulaal and Roopa had come back home in the evening after an exhaustive shopping trip. She is just about to go to her room when Revji calls her over.

Revji: "Gulaal, beta tumhara interview kaisa raha?"

Gulaal: "bahut acha raha.mujhe yakeen hai ki mujhe yeh naukri mil jaayegi.Kesar bhi yehi keh raha tha".

Revji: "beta, tujhe ithna khush dekh kar mujhe bahut acha lag raha hai.tu us ghar mein sach mein khush tho hai na beta, koi tujhse kadvi baatein nahi karta na".

Gulaal: "nahi baapji,main bahut khush hoo.wahan tho sab mujhe apni beti maanthe hain.mujhe kisise koi shikaayath nahi hai.jo bhi kadvaahat thi who kab ki mit chuki".

Just then Roopa calls her over to organize the clothes that they had bought. Revji smiles and says "jaa beta jaldi jaa warna yeh poore ghar ko sar pe utha legi".

After a lot of arguments with Roopa regarding the clothes, Gulaal finally finishes up the task of organizing the clothes in her cup board. She then remembers that she had not yet talked to Motaba. She quickly calls him up.

Motaba: "Gulaal beta, congragulations.mujhe patha chala ki tumhara interview bahut acha raha".

Gulaal is surprised: "aap ko kaise patha chala?", and then she realizes "oh, Kesar ne bathaya hoga na".

Motaba: "nahi beta,maine khud pooch taach ki aur mujhe yeh tumhe bathaate hue khushi ho rahi hai ki tumhe yeh job mil gayi hai.bas do din mein tumhe apna appointment letter mil jaayega aur agle hafte se tum join kar sakti ho".

Gulaal: "kya?itni jaldi".

Motaba: "haan beta,maine unse keh diya ki jithni jaldi ho sake uthna hi acha.aur haan mera tumhare is appointment mein koi haath nahi hai.yeh sab tumhari kaabliyath ki wajah se hi hua hai.mera aashirwaad tumhare saath hamesha rahega beta".

Gulaal feels very happy and ends the call. She feels relieved that she will be able to take part in Roopa's engagement which was going to take place the day after tomorrow. Just then she gets a call and she smiles as it's from Kesar

Kesar: "tho treat kab de rahi ho?"

Gulaal: "tumhe patha chal gaya?"

Kesar: "arre mujhe kaise patha na chaltha.tum bhi kabhi kabhi bahut funny baatein karti ho Gulaal.ab jaldi bataoo treat kab de rahi ho.aur Rewa,woh tho jaise mere peeche hi pad gayi hai.use jab se tumhare job ke baare mein patha chala hai tab se mujhse treat maang rahi hai.jab maine poocha ki main kyun treat doon?job tho Gulaal ki lagi hai.tho woh kehne lagi ki haan job Gulaal ko mili hai lekin faayda tho tujhe hoga na".

Gulaal smiles thinking about Rewa's mischevious answer: "sach hi kaha na usne.aur jald hi treat dena use, apni aur meri taraf se".

Kesar: "aur meri treat.uska kya?"

Gulaal: "woh parson Roopa ki engagement hai.tum,Rewa aur Talli aaoge na bas tabhi de dungi treat tum sab ko ek saath.ithna acha lunch hoga na.tum logon ko bahut acha lagega".

Kesar laughs and says, "theek hai.abhi ke liye tho wohi kaafi hai.baad mein dekh loonga tumhe".

Gulaal blushes and replies: "acha abhi main rakhti hoon.Roopa aa rahi hai. parson milenge.Good Night and Sweet Dreams".

Soon the day of the engagement arrives. Gulaal is in her room getting ready in a hurry as she needed to go and help Roopa afterwards. She did not want to wear any bright coloured ghagra choli so she had opted for a saree in a light peach colour with some beautiful silver work in it. She wears a small silver necklace and matching earrings along with some peach and silver colured bangles. She put on a small silver colured bindi on her forehead which completed her look. Satisfied with her look she rushes to Roopa's room which looked like a battlefield with clothes lying all around and finds her sister sitting in the midst of all the mess crying like a baby. Gulaal makes her way through the clothes carefully and sits beside her sister. "Roopa,kya hua tu ro kyun rahi hai?"

Roopa: "patha nahi didi.bas main aaj pehene ke liye kapde try kar rahi thi aur achaanak mujhe ek ajeeb darr ne gher liya.main ek nayi zindagi mein kadam rakhne jaa rahi hoon.kya main yeh sab sambhaal paaungi?dekho na didi main tho khud apne aap ko aur apne kamre ko sambhaal nahi sakti.main kaise poore ghar ko chalaaungi?".

Gulaal smiles at her sister "bas itni si baat.arre main jaanti hoon ki meri behen agar chaahe na tho is poore desh ko hi chalaa sakti hai.ghar tho tumhare baaye haath ka khel hoga.tum bilkul chinta math karo Roopa,sab acha hi hoga".

Roopa in a hesitant voice: "lekin didi aap ke saath jo……."

Gulaal interrupts her and says "meri baat chodo.main tho Vasant se theek se baat bhi nahi kar paayi shaadi se pehle. Main uski patni tho bani lekin kabhi use jaan nahi paayi.lekin aisa tumhare saath nahi hoga.Baapji ne is baar achi tarah se chaan been ki hai. aur phir tum dono ko yeh mauka bhi mila hai ki ek doosre ko jaan sako,baatein kar sako,ek doosre ki pasand,na pasand share kar sako.tho tumhe darr kyun lag raha hai?"

Roopa smiles through her tears: "nahi didi ab mujhe darr nahi lag raha.aap ki baaton ne mujhe yaad dilaa diya ki main use kyun pasand karne lagi.haan wohi mere liye sabse acha jeevan saathi hoga.thanks didi", and she hugs Gulaal.

Gulaal: "ab chalo bahut der ho gayi hai.tayyar nahi hona hai kya.chal main madadh kar deti hoon". Gulaal helps Roopa get dressed in a beautiful peacock blue Ghagra choli. With all the makeup and hair done Gulaal takes a final look at her sister and says "arre aaj tho bilkul pari lag rahi ho.kahin tumhe nazar na lag jaaye". She takes kaajal from her eyes and puts it behind Roopa's ear. "haan ab bilkul theek hai". just then Poonam ba comes in and takes a look at her daughter and starts crying. Gulaal in an aanoyed tone "baa abhi abhi maine iska rona bandh kiya hai.ab aap rone lagogi na tho phir se yeh rona shuru kar degi aur saara makeup bigad jaayega.waise bhi rone ke liye shaadi aur bidai bache hain na.abhi se hi kyun?" Poonam ba smiles "acha baba nahi roti main tho yeh kehne aayi thi ki mehmaan aana shuru ho gaye hain.aur Gulaal, Kesar,Rewa,Sudha aur Talli bhi pahunch gaye hain.tum zara unka dhyaan rakhna theek hai beta".

Gulaal's heart suddenly starts beating faster as she thinks, "Kesar aa gaya".
