Okay my school work decided to be the B-word over the start of this week, for no reason i can fathom, except some anti-miracle which suddenly brought to fore godforesaken amounts of pending paper work.

But now its past me - finally!

Reemz/Nur - GK scene it is then? Reemz, I like the idea of going alternate very much. And not strictly speaking, but can we have some semblance of round about hour when we'd stick around online sooner or later so one of us doesn't just make the post and that's that? Gulaal used to air at about 9, and Reemz you can't make that hour, neither can I for at least a fortnight - is say another 2 hours to that (11 IST) good in general? like something here and there but 11 as average?

On a side note - although I know Star Player shall be ever the unrelenting thing, I shall try and upload the HD-est quality of the scene I have and paste the link - if it works - on the thread. But this is probably like a minuscule chance anyway!

Onto lesser matters?!?! - Nur, I watched the first episode of that show, and it was such a turn off that I wasn't even curious to visit the forum - like it didn't even occur to me like that! And I actually had not seen Gulaal's first episode at that point, which i saw a couple days later courtesy Srushti's posts, and I can't even begin to brag about the difference. For some reason, I'd always thought that the initial phase of Gulaal was somewhat cliche - just as you say about GV a couple - and the entire girl finds water in desert idea wasn't a seller for me. To be honest. I never knew anything about the show - cause this is not even a production house that churns out that insane amount of trailers where in you know the story whether or not you're watching! So watching old episodes - especially the pre Vasant death time, where he did have precedence over Ali's Kesar version, I wasn't betting on it - but was I wrong! I haven't been able to be in awe enough of the DOP's work in this show, and it's all the more amazing in the beginning episodes. Again, even though GV have a typical dupatta scene, Gullu makes a waltzing filmy entry as Srushti puts - perhaps viewing all this in retrospective is what makes it all different for me. I've always said I don't know what watching this show beginning to end would have been like - including the very debatable DV phase! But the one thing that has stood enormously with this team is - as Reemz says - they have let the show do the talking, not the TRPs, not the promos, not the hawt scenes... they've just made sure the cast and crew is made up of people where everyone knows there work really well - and in the end, Gulaal has come out as one of a kind. Simple as that - when you think about what has gone into making such a masterpiece.

I don't want to be judgmental or arrogant - but really people call for it, when they go around talking about 'giving' the newbies a chance! Come to think of it Neil is such an old guy in the industry. AND he's had only 5 months run on this show, which might as well be a settling time for half the actors to get their make up and appearances in order 🥱 We'll be watching the old GK scenes now, and it will be evident how much Neil has grown with every episode - as an actor, as a performer, and of course as a character in his layers. His subtlest of nuances in expression have found a plethora in variety... its been a constantly expanding process - but as we discussed once before, he was never a put off to begin with. The idea of bringing a new face on TV - for god sake - is giving talent a chance, digging it out and honing it, not (as was said on Navya forum once I think?) finding a 'face' that fits the role and then begin acting lessons from scratch with the show ON AIR! I cannot for the life of me believe that there is dearth of genuine talent in terms of acting in a country where from hails the second largest movie making industry in the world! I personally think Indian TV doesn't actually hunt the acting grounds - aka theater places - to get their faces. They're running after the faces - not just good looking ideally, but 'faces' that suit a character (remember what they said about Soumya playing Navya?!) The idea is to find the 'talent' - looks ka kaam to make up artist ka hota hai anyway!

And this discussion/debate can go on endlessly. Technically, the production houses/channels/show makers don't have the priorities right. And they are grooming - not just this age of TV industry which is so bland and mediocre - but also a vast audience base which prefers to not think. And the process goes round in circles. A mediocre show becomes a hit, more makers adopt the ideology; more shows like that ensure more audience watches such stuff... the rare exceptions get sidelines by makers and audience alike... Its a sad state - and Reemz, I had to tie my hands virtually to not give in to the temptation to 'comment' on DABH forum where people were even COMPARING that show with Gulaal. Yes, maybe the TM started off the debate, and it wasn't in accord with IF rules... but honestly, anyone who can even deem the possibility of comparison, forget equality, between these 2 shows - clearly has no perspective about quality. And this is not about difference of opinions. This is plainly about settling for less, because perceiving 'more' is not everyone's cup of tea. But don't we live in a world where Stephenie Meyer and Justin Beiebers (however that last name is spelled) acquire their own enormous fan bases?! No. Its not about matter of opinions or choices at all. It is about sidelining quality for lack of it. When I was a kid, and wanted to read Nancy Drews and Hardy Boys and what... Sweet Valleys?!, my teacher promoted (even insisted) reading 'good literature'. And even if I was reading cliche love stories - at least it was Austen and Charlotte and Bronte at the age of 11 or 12. Quality is an acquired taste - and it needs the right prompting. Maybe that idea has altogether changed!

Anyway - we're doing the thread tonight then? Reemz you kick off the first scene - yayyy, sikka will be back! 😆 Anyone find it odd Gullu didn't welcome her beloved Kesuda in her beloved blue uniform?! 😲

Jzee, honestly I understand everyone's sentimental about every phase related to Gulaal pre and post leap but I will stand by my view that the GV scenes in the very beginning were mega cheesy...no matter how beautiful the cinematography, the piyu mhaari bg score...romance to me is NOT a girl falling off a ferris wheel about 50 feet in the air and some dude catching her.

I've liked the show as a whole otherwise...the phase leading up to the DV was one of the more depressing ones but I'd take even THAT over cheesy GV romance scenes...thankfully GV scenes got a bit better after Gulaal came to Talsagra and found water and stuff but all the initial stuff was too cheesy for me to digest...thank god for Kesar even back then...he's one of a kind :P

I feel the show really came into it's own with the DV and then ofcourse heading closer to the leap and ultimately the post-leap era...the REAL story began then in essence.

On a different note, I was a big Nancy Drew/Hardy boys fan too! Did we just date ourselves with this piece of info, Jzee? LOL...anyways, I pity the kids of today...we had MUCH better reading material growing up.

I haven't watched any epi of the new show and frankly have no interest in...I watched Gulaal from the very beginning cuz the promos, the storyline intrigued me enough and the first epi was magnificently shot...I feel quality speaks for itself...although that may not be a practical POV considering today's fast paced times where everyone has to jostle each other to grab attention.

11 IST should be fine for me...I'll probably be OL around that time most days as far as I know.

^^ Lol! Yes I was huge on those for about a year. I read up every single Nancy Drew cae file and mystery, and hardy Boys alike in the span of that time - like every single one! I'd basically gotten into this habit of issuing books by the bulk every week my county library, and then I'd read them by the night after I was 'officially' put to bed 😆 So my mum obviously put 2 and 2 together soon enough and she shared my 'voracity' to 'drink in' books with my teachers and that's when I found someone who changed the path of my life - my grade 5 teacher. Obviously reading Victorian/Regency English as opposed paced mysteries wasn't so quick to grow on me... but then she started balancing out stuff ... and I dunno, eventually, sometime... the whole I love classics fever got high on me 😆 And well, so and on! I have to admit I liked Hardy Boys a whole lot better than the Nancy Drews though, when I compared the two 😆 What do you say?! I loved the boys! 😆 Come to think of it, Nancy was like some American teen version of Indian soaps - the femme fatale! 😆

Okay - point is, when teen shows make it big on TV, no matter how ridiculous, it doesn't make me half as mad, because their audience has that age and liking. It makes more sense to me, anyday, than these so called socially oriented serious themed 'soap operas' which run meaningless repetitive inane mundane dull tracks week after week - and get the high marks! Because their audience is supposed to the at least significantly comprised of 'mature' people. Being judgmental is just inevitable to me then! I have to admit Indian TV has a rather let down history for 'experimenting' with different themes - because the story line loses itself in the face of lesser factors far too soon and easily - so I'm not always 'intriguingly drawn by any concept. I did have a habit of flipping around channels and watching whatever would not just grate my nerves every now and then, and kept myself updated. Gulaal didn't happen for such a long time, because they didn't really go by the flip channels and discover us strategy - which, echoing you, is fair enough, but not practical - but I'm glad I did find my way around here...

As for GV - lol, I'm not defending their case on not being cheesy, at all. But I do think their pairing was meant to unfold hence. Not to 'draw' audience interest necessarily (although that must be part of the idea) but much more because that's how those two characters fit the story at that point. Simple people - a boy and a girl - in that age, chance meet, and fall in love. Life can get complicated, but it can be boringly straightforward too! Plus, I suppose contrasting that phase of Gulaal with her latter years is quite a study. I have to make this reference again, even though there's plenty of detailing difference, but it reminds me of Geet from Jab We Met - except, much much better done, with a far more pronounced and credible history leading up to the change in her character. Gulaal's chirpiness did not die out with Vasant - as was evident from her phase with chota Kesar thereafter - it slowly ebbed away, especially in the decade of his persisting absence... and recovering it hence, was a one tedious process!

And chalo - I'll make way to my morning chores now, but yes, GK post tonight - hopefully Reemz will come and see this and make it... else I will.

LOL I liked both equally in some ways...hey Nancy DID solve all those mysteries and she did have a steady boyfriend, didn't she? How was she a femme fatale then? lol

Anyways, I feel these "teen" novels were still so much better back then than they are these days...and all the teenage "dramas" on TV toh less said the better about them.

I'll cherish Enid Blyton the most though out of all the things I read in my childhood.

As for GV...yes I do get the CONCEPT of what they tried to do with that aspect of the storyline from an overarching perspective but I still don't see the need really to show OTT stuff like the ferris wheel scene which was really pushing it...anywhoo that's just me...ofcourse we all now know that Vasant was supposed to be that brief part of the journey and the tool used to bring Gulaal to Talsagra, to Kesar, to the family.

Gulaal's chirpiness existed before Vasant also...but obviously meeting him, marrying him, being left as his widow buried that chirpiness inside the defensive shell she built to be able to survive.

Ok chalo, will see ya later then!

Oh I cannot go without saying this - ENID BLYTON was my childhood god(dess) ... I shall never get over my love for her work, like never! Every single one of my child hood fantasies had one thing or the other to do with EB's stuff! I wanted a dog like Timothy, I wanted to go to a boarding like the Claire twins, I wanted to go on an adventure caravan trip, have a stately home... blah blah blah! Endless love to Blyton. She is a genius, if there ever was one for the younger years!
