Actor Kiran Karmakar talks about life after "Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii"

ENDEARING Kiran Karmakar
As an actor he is extremely engaging. And that seems not just because he is so talented. Well-known tele-actor Kiran Karmakar seems to imbue every role he enacts with his calm, demure self. Take Om in the Star Plus super grosser, Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii. In a designer saas-bahu serial from the 'K' factory, Karmakar managed to create a space for himself in the viewers' mind. Not just by following the dictates of the director but with his personality that he so dexterously pumped into the character. Interact with him and you know what one is talking about. Minus arrogance, minus any great projection of his success, the Mumbaiite comes across as a simple person, quite effortlessly reminding you of Parvati's Om. "Finally, we all are here to work," is how he sees his success in telly-land. Though the role of Om brought him accolades, he chose to get out of Kahaani... some time back. "I chose to leave the role because I feel every character has a certain life span, and if we take it beyond that, it fails to become convincing to the people," says Karmakar. In return, the actor says he got time to do many other things. "If I had continued with Kahaani... I would not have got the time to do a role in the Star Plus serial Thodi Si Zameen Thoda Sa Aasmaan or the play Chand Lamhe with talented people like Javed Siddiqui," he says. Also, Karmakar will now be seen on the SaharaOne soap, Ghar... Ek Sapnaa and yet another new serial to begin in August-September. "Shooting for Ghar... Ek Sapnaa will start in a day or two. It is not a permanent role. I will be seen for about 25-30 episodes," he states. Karmakar will play Shekhar, a 35-year-old IT professional whose marriage is being arranged to the already existing character Devika. "Shekhar has a lighter side to him, but having grown up in a family where his mother dominated the scenario, he likes women of imposing attitude," explains Karmakar. Visibility matters Though he had worked in Doordarshan serials before satellite TV discovered him, Karmakar is currently not quite keen to be seen on the national network. "Now, most of the series on DD are copied from cable TV. Most times, the quality of production, make-up, etc. is not up to the mark. So, if you have to be doing these serials, then you'd better be seen on private channels. After all, viewership of these channels counts. As an actor, visibility matters to me," he shares his thoughts quickly, frankly. And you know he has a point there.
