"Every Indian woman can relate to my role"
Sayantani Ghosh TV actressViresh Verma
She is young, chirpy with a winsome attitude. She made her presence felt with her remarkable role in Kumkum. From modeling to Bengali cinema to the commercial Indian television Sayantani Ghosh has come a long way. Here she talks about her debut as female lead protagonist in SaharaOne Television serial Ghar…Ek Sapna, her experience as an actress, her passions and interests ...
Q. Tell us about your role in Ghar…Ek Sapna.
I play the central character called Kakul, the daughter of a very powerful politico business figure of Bihar - Om Shankar. Kakul is a very positive girl, vivacious, innocent and most importantly the apple of her father's eyes. She's a girl with small town values, and dreams of a big and happy family after marriage. Being the youngest in the family, Kakul has grown in an over-protected environment and has never been in love before. Her innocence leads her to fall in love with Samman for whom she was merely the object of flirtation. But the fact that Kakul belongs to such a family, ensures that he has to pay a huge price for his not so-honourable intentions. Samman has to marry her and is forced to take her home with him. But she realizes that there is something missing in her marriage, a complete home that she had dreamt of. As she takes upon herself to bring together the pieces of her shattered dreams and the various problems she encounters all along is worth watching for the viewers.
Q. How did you bag the lead role of Kakul?
I was out shopping with my mother one day when I got a call saying there are auditions happening for a lead protagonist for the new show on SaharaOne Television being made by Ajai Sinha, who is so popular in the television industry. I gave the auditions, took the screen test and the rest is history. Getting to portray a meaty role, a character, which every Indian woman can relate to, was a great experience. Moreover, the story has a key role for every member of the family without even the slightest flavour of a saas-bahu drama. Hence there was no way I could have refused this offer.
Q. Can you tell us something about your background?
I am a graduate in English from Kolkata. Since my parents were particular about my education, I made it a point to complete my graduation. Though it wasn't planned, I moved to arts faculty. I won the Miss Kolkata title in the year 2003. Then I did couple of advertisements and have also acted in Bengali films with top banners. Prior to Ghar…Ek Sapna, I worked in the serial KumKum.
Q. Is there any memorable moment on the sets you want to share with the viewers?
Yes. I got a compliment recently from my team members. From my crew to producer, all feel that I look beautiful in all my scenes shot in the night. They have decided that all-important scenes have to be shot in the night.
Q. How has your life changed after doing a daily soap?
My life has certainly become very hectic. There is lot of work happening as far as television is concerned and I am happy in a way. This show is one of my best platforms to prove my acting prowess. With so many professionals on the sets and the excitement of playing the central character, all my tiredness vanishes. All I want to do is to give my best during every shot.
Q. What are your other interests apart from acting?
I am a trained Bharat Natyam and Mohini Attam dancer. When in college, I was very much a part of dance dramas in Kolkata. Everyone in my family - from my father to aunts and cousins are trained singers. So, somewhere, I too have inherited those genes and sing well. I even play the synthesizer.
