"Every Indian woman can relate to my role"
Sayantani Ghosh TV actressViresh Verma

She is young, chirpy with a winsome attitude. She made her presence felt with her remarkable role in Kumkum. From modeling to Bengali cinema to the commercial Indian television Sayantani Ghosh has come a long way. Here she talks about her debut as female lead protagonist in SaharaOne Television serial Ghar…Ek Sapna, her experience as an actress, her passions and interests ...

Q. Tell us about your role in Ghar…Ek Sapna.
I play the central character called Kakul, the daughter of a very powerful politico business figure of Bihar - Om Shankar. Kakul is a very positive girl, vivacious, innocent and most importantly the apple of her father's eyes. She's a girl with small town values, and dreams of a big and happy family after marriage. Being the youngest in the family, Kakul has grown in an over-protected environment and has never been in love before. Her innocence leads her to fall in love with Samman for whom she was merely the object of flirtation. But the fact that Kakul belongs to such a family, ensures that he has to pay a huge price for his not so-honourable intentions. Samman has to marry her and is forced to take her home with him. But she realizes that there is something missing in her marriage, a complete home that she had dreamt of. As she takes upon herself to bring together the pieces of her shattered dreams and the various problems she encounters all along is worth watching for the viewers.

Q. How did you bag the lead role of Kakul?
I was out shopping with my mother one day when I got a call saying there are auditions happening for a lead protagonist for the new show on SaharaOne Television being made by Ajai Sinha, who is so popular in the television industry. I gave the auditions, took the screen test and the rest is history. Getting to portray a meaty role, a character, which every Indian woman can relate to, was a great experience. Moreover, the story has a key role for every member of the family without even the slightest flavour of a saas-bahu drama. Hence there was no way I could have refused this offer.

Q. Can you tell us something about your background?
I am a graduate in English from Kolkata. Since my parents were particular about my education, I made it a point to complete my graduation. Though it wasn't planned, I moved to arts faculty. I won the Miss Kolkata title in the year 2003. Then I did couple of advertisements and have also acted in Bengali films with top banners. Prior to Ghar…Ek Sapna, I worked in the serial KumKum.

Q. Is there any memorable moment on the sets you want to share with the viewers?
Yes. I got a compliment recently from my team members. From my crew to producer, all feel that I look beautiful in all my scenes shot in the night. They have decided that all-important scenes have to be shot in the night.

Q. How has your life changed after doing a daily soap?
My life has certainly become very hectic. There is lot of work happening as far as television is concerned and I am happy in a way. This show is one of my best platforms to prove my acting prowess. With so many professionals on the sets and the excitement of playing the central character, all my tiredness vanishes. All I want to do is to give my best during every shot.

Q. What are your other interests apart from acting?
I am a trained Bharat Natyam and Mohini Attam dancer. When in college, I was very much a part of dance dramas in Kolkata. Everyone in my family - from my father to aunts and cousins are trained singers. So, somewhere, I too have inherited those genes and sing well. I even play the synthesizer.

Here lies the responsibility of a director who should be alert and known to remind the viewers what they should know. I think, small screen's primary job is not only to entertain but also to educate, said Ajai Sinha who has already won the critics award for his path-breaking soaps. Many small screen directors have taken a beating in the face of loud melodies dramas. But Ajai Sinha is trying to bring in something new and refreshing to the small screen viewers. Ghar Ek Sapna for Sahara One!

Looks like it's raining shows on Sahara One. After launching three major prime time soaps, the channel is now gearing up to woo audiences with a love story Ghar Ek Sapna.

Sayantani Ghosh

Produced and directed by Ajay Sinha, the show promises an interesting star cast, considering it's his next venture post the superhit Astitva Ek Prem Kahani on ZeeTV. Shayantani Ghosh plays the lead protagonist in the show and some of the other actors in the show are Alok Nath, Himani Shivpuri, Resham Seth, Harsh Chayya, Vineet Kumar, Upasana Shukla and Ujjwal Rana.
The story revolves around two families (from Bihar and Mumbai) and how clashes crop up between them.

Resham Seth plays a Bihari girl in the show and affirms that "We are two sisters in the show, I play Trisha and Shayanatni plays Kakul. I am the teekhi, clever, well educated, outspoken, bold and proud, newly married sister while my younger sister is the soft spoken, sweet girl who is very protective about me."

Vineet Kumar plays the influential father to Resham and Shayantani.

Resham Seth: Playing the bold elder sister

Alok Nath plays the dominating father to Harsh Chayya, Ujjwal Rana and Piyush. "I play this strict, forth right man who has made his riches and is proud of it. I took up this role as it promises to be different along with a good atmosphere on the sets. And of course, the money is also good. We are shown as the biggest family in town whose younger son goes to Bihar to get married and falls in love with a girl out there. The story is then about how the girl comes into the modern family and the trouble begins," points out the veteran actor who is currently also doing Sanskar on Doordarshan.

The actors have begun shooting in Rajpipla(Gujrat) for the on going sequence, post which they start shooting in Mumbai from November 9.

Also the primetime daily show goes on air on 4 December.

Sahara One's Ghar Ek Sapna!

Sahara One is geared up with a slew of shows lined up for a grand launch this December. The channel has churned out family drama's in the past and this time around is all set to launch a love story titled Ghar Ek Sapna which will be directed by ace director Ajai Sinha post the success of Zee's Astitva- Ek Prem Kahani.
The show has an interesting star cast which includes the likes of Alok Nath, Harsh Chhaya, Himani Shivpuri, Barkha Madan and Kavita Kaushik with a fresh face of Sayantani Ghosh who plays the protagonist(Kakul).

The story revolves around a girl who marries the man she loves and trusts and how she adjusts in the new house and the new city after her sudden marriage.
"I've done Samay and Hasratien in the past and this isn't a new genre for me and very hopeful it will be one of the top grosser's for the channel. I am the pioneer of this genre and make such stories work on any channel," says Ajai Sinha, the director of the show.
We ask the main protagonist of the show how what made her take up the role
"I play Kakul who has a Bihari background but at the same time she's very modern in her values and well educated. She goes for a friend's wedding and that's where a guy falls for her and flirts around with her. Finally due to circumstances she is forced to get married to this guy. She comes to Mumbai to her husband's house but because the family is against her as they had other plans for the son of the family, the girl doesn't get her due and falls prey to the tricks of the family. It's this girl's journey to make the house into her home and get everyone to accept her," says the pretty young thing who has worked in Kumkum's new generation previously.
Here's hoping this sapna rakes in more TRP ratings for the channel.

She's one helluva' headstrong girl-the demure-looking Shayantani Ghosh(Kakul in SaharaOne's Ghar Ek Sapna)-whose porcelain beauty conceals the strong personality within. Sample this-the girl, who had got a dream break in the post-leap Star Plus' Kumkum, actually staged a walkout when she felt that the role was going nowhere. "I have always followed the dictats of my heart. Even as a child, when my parents wanted me to become a doctor or an IAS officer, I followed my heart's calling and joined movies-something not so common for a middle-class bengali girl staying in Kolkata."

Talking about why she walked out of Kumkum, Shayantani explains, "The serial might be very popular but it was not doing anything for me as an actor. I was promised a very meaty role to begin with but then, slowly, it trickled down to making me a mere showpiece and i was not going to take that lying down. So, quit the serial unheeded of all the well-meaning advice. And i have no regrets at all. Had i still been sticking around in Kumkum, I wouldn't have got Ghar Ek Sapna."

Shayantani is very excited about the serial. "Kakul's a fun-loving girl, growing up in a male-dominated family of Bihar and the story depicts the travails she faces when she dares to fall in love. The character and her life-graph are so far removed from mine, which is what motivated me to accept the role."

Shayantani is not a stranger to the glamour world. This aspirant-journalist, who modelled during college-days, is a name to reckon with in the Kolkata film-circle. She has to her credit, successful Bengali films like Raju Uncle, Naayak and Shopno. Although the actor won't mind a role in a Bollywood pot-boiler, she's sure that she'd want to do only meaningful roles. "Rani Mukherjee and Mallika Sherawat, both are successful actresses, but I'm definately not interested in Mallika's kind of success" Shayantani proclaims. Talk about being head-strong.

" I like to dance when I am not working"

Shayantani Ghosh could have made it big in Kolkata but the actor chose to pursue her career in Mumbai. The Bengali beauty has four regional films to her credit before she landed in the city of dreams and bagged a meaty role in Star Plus' Kumkum. And now lady luck seems to have beckoned on Shayantani who is all set to play the main lead in Ajay Sinha's new family drama, Ghar Ek Sapna for Sahara One.

Kavita Shyam caught up with this upcoming talent.

What brought you to Mumbai considering you are from Kolkata?
I am born and brought up in Kolkata and my parents always wanted me to finish my basic education and then take up a profession of my choice. I started with modelling and then went on to do a few short films in Kolkata. I have done four Bengali films (opposite Prasanjit) in a row. I'd come down to Mumbai for fun and someone spotted me when I'd gone for an audition and got selected for Kumkum.

So why did you quit Kumkum so soon?
I was selected for Kumkum to be a part of the generation leap. But I ended up quitting the show after two months as the character changed and it was different from what I had started as. I took a break for two months and later was offered Ghar Ek Sapna.

What is your role like in this new show ?
I play the main protagonist Kakul who has a Bihari background but at the same time she's very modern in her values and well educated. She goes for a friend's
wedding and that's where a guy falls for her and flirts around with her. Finally due to circumstances she is forced to get married to this guy. She comes to Mumbai to her husband's house but because the family is against her as they had other plans for the son of the family, the girl doesn't get her due and falls prey to the tricks of the family. It's this girl's journey to make the house into her home and get everyone to accept her.

Do you relate yourself to the character?

Like every girl I also dream of having a nice family life with a caring husband. So somewhere I connect with her. So there are a lot of similarities between the real and reel Shayantani.

What after Ghar Ek Sapna?
I am going to take each day as it comes. I've done films and now doing television lets see how it all works out in future. Definitely Hindi movies are in my mind but I am doing television as it provides good women oriented shows. While commercial films don't have much scope for women besides just being in the background. And parallel cinema seems to provide much more creative satisfaction.

Tell us about your personal life?
It's just work for now and have no time for anything else and am working very hard for my show. I like to dance(Bharatnatayam and Jazz) when I am not working. For now my minds in Mumbai while my hearts in Kolkata as I have all my people out there.

Ujwal Rana and Sayantani Ghosh

Actress Sayantani Ghosh, aka Kakul, and Ujwal Rana, aka Samman, in Ghar Ek Sapna had a tough time shooting a dream wedding sequence in the show. Both the actors shot in ankle-deep water continuously for nine hours. As a result, Sayantani ended up suffering from severe body ache.

Sayantani recalls, "It was a dream wedding sequence, shot in a pool of water. We were supposed to take the saat phere in water. We started shooting at around 10.30 pm and finished by 7 am. It was really difficult. I was shivering, standing barefoot in the ice-cold water. However, we had no option but to complete the sequence."

Sayantani says, "I was wearing a heavy wedding sari. And since we were shooting in ankle-deep water, my sari got drenched and became heavier. Moreover, during the break, we were not allowed to go to the make-up van as it would spoil the continuity of the scene. Later I had severe body ache and my feet were almost numb."

Actor Ujwal Rana says, "I know, it was a pain shooting the whole sequence. But I am happy that everything turned out well finally."

The entire cast and crew of Ajai Sinha's show Ghar Ek Sapna have come back with a strange story from their shooting at Rajpipla Palace, near Bharuch in Gujarat. The palace, according to the unit members, is haunted! They even claim that during their seven-day stay in the palace they experienced some spine-chilling experiences.

When contacted, director Ajai Sinha said, "The whole unit was traumatised with the spooky goings-on at the palace. But it was Sayantani, the lead actress of my show, who was the worst affected by the incident. Her room was in one remote corner of the palace. Although I didn't witness anything uncanny myself, the entire unit said that they heard women wearing anklets walking around the palace in the night...

Sayantani Ghosh gave us a first-hand version of the ghost story. She said, "We were put up in a palace, which was nice and comfortable, except for the spooky noises. On the first night, I didn't pay much heed to the noise. But the noise continued non-stop throughout the night. Initially, I thought it was one of the crew members, who was playing a prank on me. But when the same noise, of a woman walking, along with the tinkle of payals, was repeated the next day, I got scared. Since then, I started shooting even during the nights to avoid going back to the palace. Now I am glad to be back in Mumbai."

Is Ram Gopal Verma listening? Perhaps he can shoot his next spine-chiller there…

Bus, yaar: Buffaloes run amok on the sets of Ghar Ek Sapna

Director Ajai Sinha, who has just returned after a shooting stint in Bihar for his serial Ghar Ek Sapna, has an interesting story to narrate. The director recalls an incident that could have actually resulted into a fatal accident.

Darshan Dave
Ajai says, "We were shooting a chase sequence, where Darshan, who plays Sujit in the serial, was supposed to chase a bus with his jeep. There were three other co-actors with him in the jeep. We had hired six buffaloes for the scene to make the backdrop look real. The buffalos were tied up in one corner when we were shooting the sequence. Darshan was driving the jeep, chasing the bus. Suddenly he saw the buffaloes on the road, one of them charged at him in a fury while the other jumped right into the jeep. A scared Darshan hopped out just in time. Thankfully, he didn't get hurt."

When contacted, Darshan said, "It was a horrible experience and I am still in shock. One of the buffaloes almost climbed on to the jeep while the other one charged at me with its horns. If I had not jumped out of the jeep, I would probably have been dead by now."
