Chapter 26: Abandoned
[Past]
“What do you mean he doesn’t want to see me?” Geet asked blinking as her mind struggled to process what Anil had just relayed to her.
“I told him you were here, he doesn’t want to see you”.
Dread filled her. She had expected anger, maybe resentment as she hadn’t come around to see him but this? That wasn’t something she had been prepared for. He had refused to see her when he was in the wrong? When he had cheated and embezzled?
“I need to see him” she repeated.
“He knows you’re here, Geet. And he doesn’t wish to see you. I’m sorry” Anil responded looking apologetically at her. “His case would be called shortly, I need to go” he said and walked away without another glance.
Geet stared blankly as she tried to make sense. “He doesn’t want to see me?” she whispered to no one in particular but Maan heard. He closed the distance and placed his hand over her shoulder.
“C’mon, Geet. Let’s go”.
“If he doesn’t want to speak to me, then fine. But I’m going to stay here, Maan. I need to hear his defence. I don’t want to believe he is capable of all this”.
“We don’t expect nasty surprises by those closest to us but they disappoint us the most” he replied softly.
“I need to be here” she responded fuelled by determination.
Maan nodded albeit reluctantly and escorted her to the court room where his case was going to be held.
Geet sat in the gallery with Maan beside her. Her eyes drew to Arjun as he was led into his seat, she inched forward hoping he’d look up at her, acknowledge her. He didn’t. He didn’t care right now.
The prosecution wasted no time laying out their case before the court as the session started. Geet swallowed hard and was filled with anxiety hearing the prosecutor throw words out of ‘falsified financial records, offshore accounts, money trails, embezzling funds’.
She shifted uncomfortably when a forensic accountant was called to the stand.
"Our investigation traced large sums of money funnelled into offshore accounts registered under Mr. Singhania's name” he explained, displaying the documents on a large screen. "These transactions coincided with the financial downfall of several associated businesses, including those that had invested in his company”.
Arjun sat rigid in his seat, his expression unreadable, but Geet noticed the way his fingers curled into fists.
"And to clarify, was Mr. Singhania the sole person with access to these accounts?" the prosecutor pressed on, his voice becoming louder and clearer for the court.
The accountant nodded. "Yes. The accounts were set up under his personal credentials. There is no indication of external interference”.
A murmur rippled through the courtroom.
Geet’s breath hitched. She turned to look at Arjun, hoping to see some sign, some sort of reaction that would tell her this wasn’t true. But he remained impassive, his jaw clenched.
Maan watched everything unfold before him. He hadn’t expected things to get this far. He had only wanted to separate the two and ensure that Arjun was no longer going to be in Geet’s life. However, he couldn’t regret his actions. His goal was to obtain Geet and only Geet. He couldn’t think about the consequences that his actions might bring into his life.
He listened as the prosecution continued presenting his case and soon called a former colleague from Arjun’s company to the stand. The former employee seemed hesitant and nervous and finally responded to the prosecutor’s questions.
“Mr Singhania was always a great boss, but things changed when there were financial issues in the company. We were working hard and suddenly there’s changes in the finances and he couldn’t explain where this influx of money came from really… It didn’t make sense”.
Arjun’s defence attorney objected, attempting to discredit the witness as a disgruntled employee. But the damage was already done.
More financial records were presented.
A series of emails were read aloud, messages that hinted at knowledge of funds being shifted, vague instructions that could be interpreted as cover-ups.
And yet, Arjun’s defence had little to counter.
Maan’s team had done an excellent job of setting everything up perfectly.
