Beautiful update. Maan explaination about his past opened the door to know all characters nicely. He is one briliant candidate. Waiting for next.

Chapter 2

It was early in the morning and I was on the terrace witnessing the first streaks of Sun paint the sky when I saw her next.

That's the first time I had looked at her, I think.

In her veranda stood a tulasi plant in a tall square granite planter. The granite pot was like a small temple with scriptures engraved on all its sides and it contained an alcove where I had often caught sight of a small clay lamp flickering by.

I had seen her come stand in front of the planter with a puja thali (plate) in her hand.

She had been wearing a Salwar Kameez, the color of the dark forest. Her hair for a change had been left loose and the wet and the wild curls had hung past her waist.

I had walked to the balustrade in a daze.

Why? The reason eludes me.

Perhaps, I had wanted to observe her more closely. There was an inexplicable pull that I had felt then.

Looking below, I saw her cup the tiny, shiny brass in her right palm and offer water to the sacred plant. Her left arm had just touched her right one.

The sleeves of her suit were short and her arms were bare, my mind had registered.

I watched as she lighted the incense sticks waving them in the air and the smell of sandalwood diffused in the air.

Then she had circumabulated the tulasi plant thrice.

Marigold flowers and some prasad, she had offered to the holy Basil.
Then touching the leaves of the plant, she had brought her hand to touch her forehead.

Later when I had concentrated, had I seen a small red Kumkum dot on her forehead.

Her hands joined together she had turned to face the sun.

The dark curls that framed her face were such a contrast to her olive skin.

I could see her lips whispering inaudible prayers.

And then she had opened her eyes.

And it seemed we were caught in time.

She looked at me. I looked at her. We both had looked straight at each other.

I could hear the cawing of the crows, the twittering of house sparrows.

A school van's horn had blared somewhere.

A pressure cooker had whistled somewhere.

"Geet Geet .."

Her Mami was calling her perhaps.

"Maan.."

My grandmother was calling me too.

I was yet to take my bath. I had another mock test today. I should leave early for the class

And yet I stood rooted at the spot.

There was something about this whole situation. This, us, standing motionless and looking into each other's eyes.

This must be a vision I had conjured up

"Geet," the voice was clearer and closer now.

Rano Aunty was coming out.

It was then she had broken out of the momentary dream and had picked up the thali and walked away without a backward glance.

The dust had begun to dance in the sun and I had found myself trying to comprehend what had just taken place.

I had never been this confused.

But all of it had been forgotten when I had started answering my test.
I had forgotten all about her existence until the evening when I had found her waiting outside my house.

She stood in front of the entrance gate framed with the flowers of bougainvillaea.

Her hair had been again tied back severely and her eyes were hidden behind the glasses.

It was a windy evening and her square printed cotton dupatta occasionally fluttered with the wind.

Her fingers twirled a pink drooping, fragile bougainvillaea flower.

"Good evening," I greeted her, " Did you need anything?"

"Aapka bahumulya samay (Your precious time)," she answered.

Part 1

Maan's family and his bond with everyone...as a grown up, he can now comprehend his father's love behind the disciplinary and strict demeanor..a well done outset.
and some very well raised questions too..excellence and moving ahead in any profession or stream is what matters and not the profession itself...and then calling someone poor thing for being orphan, though the intention may not be bad or out of pity but not an appropriate expression either..

and the update got me stuck at this - I had a mother too...
he lost his mother at the age when he did not even understand the meaning of love of a mother, neither the loss of it..her image in his mind is what everyone has told him about her...a combined feeling of that of a void created by her absence and that of getting used to it.

and Geet's entry was dhamaal..

while Maan was getting his protective side up looking at her timid, shy and nervous appearance, she almost trolled him with her hindi..😆

seems she will stir up his otherwise calm life..
