CHAPTER 13. EATING AND DANCING!
After Daadima left for her house, Geet's days got filled with nothing but training; albeit a bit slower than usual! No one wanted Geet to collapse again, you see! In the morning, it was Maan teaching her all about accents and manners while the noon went with Annie who taught Geet how to hold her Saree or Duppatta. Since her childhood Geet knew only one way to wear a duppatta and one way to wear a Saree. She did not know that there were different ways to hold a duppatta. And she definitely did not know that Sarees can be worn ulta pallu, Bengali style, Marathi style and so many more styles, names of which Geet had forgotten. Annie wanted Geet to know how to hold herself so that if any party they attend has a theme attached to it, Geet could easily blend herself into it without feeling self conscious.
The evenings were spent with Dev playing games. But that did not mean it was always fun. Dev taught her to play chess and scrabble. She understood why he was playing scrabble with her; it was to improve her vocabulary in fun way. But she did not understand why he wanted to play chess with her. And when she questioned Dev, he answered with something that shocked Geet, "Talking to socialites is like playing chess!", he had told her, "You have to think about their next two questions before you answer their current one! Because they love to trap people into their own words and taunt them with barbs wrapped in sugar coated sweetness."
Geet had stared at Dev in shock for a while wondering whether he was serious or joking. And once she realised he was serious, Geet, for the first time, felt trepidation towards her mission. Raksha karna unn chudailon se Babaji! (Please protect me from those witches, Babaji!) She had prayed that night and next day she played the chess so diligently that even Dev was shocked by her dedication.
Soon one week passed since Daadima's visit and Maan called Geet into his study. It was Sunday and Geet's off day from all kinds of training so she was surprised by this summons. She entered the room softly and blinked owlishly at the table in front of her. The table was filled with food and had two chairs placed surrounding it. Maan was already seated in one and he signaled her to take the other seat. Geet sat in that seat in confusion which only built up when Maan stood up and tied her upper body to the back of the chair with a ribbon. She looked at the ribbon and then at Maan incredulously. Now what kind of game is this and how is it going to help her?
Maan looked at her and asked her to copy him. Geet gulped and then nodded. Maan proceeded to pull out a napkin from the side and spread it on his lap. Geet giggled and when Maan frowned she asked, "What scary thing are we going to eat that you placed a napkin in your lap? Are you scared that you will spill the food?" Geet giggled at her own joke but Maan was not amused.
"Geet!", Maan roared making Geet shut up and looked at him with her whole attention, "We are not playing some game here! You will have to eat in the parties too! And while most of the parties have buffet food some parties do have a formal style of eating. I want you to learn that too just to be on safer side!"
"But I know how to eat like that!", Geet announced and she was right. She had learned that on the first day she arrived when she noticed Annie eating with knife and fork. Geet had tried to copy her style and soon got used to eating in that manner instead of eating with hands.
"But can you eat without bending forward?", Maan asked and Geet frowned. She huffed and with determination speared the hara bhara kabab in front of her with fork. She looked at him triumphantly but her expression deflated when while putting the fork into her mouth, the kabab fell into her lap. She looked at her lap and then at Maan who was trying her best to not laugh.
"Hasiye! I know you want to laugh! Go ahead! Laugh!", Geet sniffed and folded her arms just as Maan unable to hold it in, burst out laughing. Geet glared at Maan but he ignored it and continued to laugh. Geet huffed in annoyance and then she narrowed her eyes at the kabab as if it had personally offended her. She pulled out the napkin and jerked it in a harsh manner. Placing it in her lap, she forked the kabab and tried to feed herself without bending. Of course, as she was not trained in eating with fork, her kababs kept on falling on her lap. And of course, Maan did not help but made matters worse by laughing at her attempts.
Muttering about how she wished to stab arrogant tycoons with the same fork, Geet stabbed the next kabab with brute force making the kabab fly out of her plate and hit Dev who was just coming into the room. Geet gasped while Maan chuckled. She gave Maan a glare and turned back to Dev, "Sorry Dev!" She squeaked.
Dev rubbed his forehead where the kabab had hit him and whined, "Geet! If you wanted me to come and eat with you, you could have just invited me! What was the need to hit me with food?" Maan let out another chuckle making Geet send another glare his way before she smiled apologetically at Dev, "Galti se hogaya! It was a mistake!"
Dev looked at her innocently, "I understand Geet! I totally understand your urge to play with this food!", he bit the kabab and made a face, "Its not that tasty! But throwing at me is wrong Geet!" Geet's jaw dropped open, "But maine galti se kiya!"
Dev shook his head in disappointment, "You should not lie, Geet! Lying is bad!"
Geet's face crumbled, "But sach mein it was a mistake!"
When Dev seemed to not believe her, Geet felt like crying. Her best friend thinks she hit him purposely!
She was about to start crying when both men burst out laughing. She looked up at them and her sadness turned into annoyance, "You were teasing me Dev! I expected this from Maan Sir! But et tu Dev?" She huffed and throwing the napkin on the table and removing the ribbon that Maan had tied, she stormed out of the room leaving a guffawing Dev and Maan behind her.
And once again the training started but with Annie taking over from Maan when it came to eating techniques. As the day of the party came near, Geet alternated between nervousness and excitement. Annie had already decided what Geet would wear, so that was one thing Geet did not have to worry about. But that did not mean Geet was worry less. She still worried about many things; like falling flat on her face while walking on her heels. She may be used to walking on heels but if she fell it would be very awkward, as a waitress falling on her face won't generate as much embarrassment as guest falling would create and Geet wanted to avoid that.
And then there was the worry of embarrassing people with her eating habits. Maan was not surprised to see Geet practicing her table manners at odd hours. Once Maan had woken up around midnight for water and was shocked to see Geet eating imaginary food in the kitchen. Maan had asked her about it and she had replied that she could not sleep so she was practicing. After that nothing surprised Maan when it came to Geet and her determination to get everything right.
Finally the day before the party came. Unlike the past few days, Geet was very calm today; because she had practiced her best and given her every bit of energy and dedication to her training. Now Geet had left everything on her Babaji! She was carefree and flouncing around the Khurana Mansion eager for the next day. And that is when Maan summoned her to the main hall. She frowned. Last time he had called her like this was on their off day and he had taught her table manners. Today was also off day and Maan was again calling her. She looked up and prayed to her Babaji that it was not some new thing for her to learn. She did not think she will be able to learn anything new in such a short time.
Unfortunately for Geet, her fears came true as Maan indeed wanted to teach her something new.
"Aao Geet!", Maan invited her as she reached the hall. Annie had gone to meet Daadima today, and tell Daadima everything that happened here according to Maan, while Dev had gone to some business meeting. Hence only Geet and Maan were present in the whole house and the servants of course!
Geet neared Maan in nervousness and her nervousness built up when Maan smiled at her softly. Smile? Raksha karna Babaji! "Geet! Today I am going to teach you how to dance!", Maan announced. Geet's eyes widened and she wanted to blurt out that she knew how to dance but kept quiet as she remembered how last time Maan had mocked her eating style. She remained silent as Maan played soft music and raised his hand.
Geet swallowed and grasped his hand. Maan placed one hand on his shoulder and other he held in his hand. He slowly swayed and Geet's eyes rose to look into his eyes. Maan smiled again, "This is how upper class people tend to dance. You must have seen it!" Geet nodded, remembering those days of being waitress when she used to see guests dance from the kitchen. Maan continued speaking, almost reading her thoughts, "Those days you saw it happening, tomorrow in the party you will be doing it!" He suddenly twirled her and she squealed in excitement. Maan chuckled at her reaction and then sternly said, "Don't squeal like this tomorrow Geet!" Geet nodded vigorously and they continued to sway.
After few minutes, Maan started doing slightly tougher moves. He spun her in and out, Geet stumbling along but slowly getting used to it. He dipped her while swinging her and when he pulled her up she came a bit too close to him. Her eyes widened at their closeness and both stilled. Maan's eyes stared at her intensely. Lost in her eyes Maan's hand on her back slowly slipped up and caressed the skin on her neck. Geet felt electrified and took in a sharp breath. She swallowed but remained still her eyes caught in his. Suddenly the music stopped and Maan came out of the trance. Geet also realised what happened and she pulled away from Maan harshly. Maan brushed his hand over his hair as both looked away. Maan cleared his throat and Geet looked up.
"Let continue! We have to get you ready for tomorrow!", Maan mumbled and Geet nodded but neither of them looked at each other's faces. Maan played the music and they again took their positions but they were stiff and awkward and any stranger would see the tension between them. They started to dance but Geet, uncomfortable to dance with now stiff bodied Maan, started to stumble and suddenly her leg tangled with his and both fell down. Geet had closed her eyes when she fell and now she opened her eyes only to come across Maan staring at her intensely again. He was above her with his body half covering her body. His one hand was on her thigh and her skin burned even though her thigh was covered by her salwar. Maan slowly moved ahead making Geet's eyes widen. As he bent closer to her, her eyes fluttered close. He moved closer and she felt his breath on her lips. Her tongue darted out and she licked her lips. She heard him give out a groan at her action and that only encouraged her urge to kiss him. She lifted her head eager to feel his lips on hers when a phone played on the background shattering the silence surrounding them.
Geet's eyes opened in a flash while Maan took a sharp breath. He looked away only for his eyes to fell on his hand on her thigh. Memories of Geet in the bathtub and her long legs attacked him and he got up with a jerk. "That's it!", Maan mumbled without even looking at her direction, "This is enough for today! You can go now!" Saying this, Maan walked out of the room as if devil was right behind him. Geet blinked in surprise. What had happened here? She blinked again. He was about to kiss her. Her hand went to her lips. And she had wanted to kiss him? Hey Babaji!
Geet stood up, confusion written on her face. She did not know what to say or do and fidgeting with duppatta she ran out of the hall too. Reaching her room, she flung herself on the bed and simply stared into distance as her mind relived the moment of almost kiss.
An hour passed and Geet still could not understand what had happened here. Maan about to kiss her was surprising to her but not as surprising as her own reaction. She had wanted Maan to kiss her. But why? The answer came to her right away. She was attracted to him. She chuckled at that. In this whole world, she could only find Maan the arrogant to start falling for. Hey Babaji! Then she remembered that Maan was about to kiss her too. She let out a laugh. You are also attracted to me Mr. Khurana!
Geet wondered what would happen now. She already knew how Maan was going to deal with it just by his reaction. I have learnt enough about you Mr. Khurana to read your reactions. And I know now that he was going to ignore it. I can guess that just by the way he ran out of the room. What's that phrase? Ah yes! He ran out of the room like a bat out of hell. Geet imagined Maan with black wings flying out of the room and Geet's giggling turned into laughter.
For a while, Geet continued to laugh but then as she sobered, her thoughts went back to her problem. So its official! Maan Singh Khurana is going to run away from this attraction. And why wouldn't he? After all, I am just a waitress! Why will he allow his feelings to grow for me? She shook her head. But how am I going to handle this? She wondered. Should she ignore it just like Maan? But then she was not like Maan. She wore her heart on her sleeve unlike Maan who locked all his emotions and dealt with life by thinking and not by feeling. But I am not like that! How am I supposed to handle this?
Geet was beyond confused. Finally, she gave up and decided to make this decision after the party. Till then she decided to avoid thinking about her situation. And who knows, after a while I might get over this attraction. She shrugged and looked around for distraction from her thoughts and her eyes fell on the TV and its remote. She grinned. Yes! Music! She switched the TV on and sitting on her bed in front of the TV she browsed through music channels. Finally she reached a channel where Katrina Kaif was jumping around singing songs.
Uff Mere Dil Mein Thodi Khaali Si Jagah Thi
Uff Tu Ne Aake Bin Kiraaye Yeh Jagah Li
Kuch Keh Bhi Na Saki
Yeh Kaisi Babasi
Yun Chupke Chupke Aaya Bin Bulaaya Mehmaan
Uff Mere Dil Mein Thodi Khaali Si Jagah Thi
Geet grinned as she enjoyed the song. She started dancing with the music still sitting on the bed while Katrina danced in the TV.
Humko Na Khabar Kab Kaise Aaya Woh
Oo Oo Oo
Dil Se Khus Phus Ka Farmaaya Woh
Oo Oo Oo
Humko Na Khabar Kab Kaise Aaya Woh
Oo Oo Oo
Dil Se Khus Phus Ka Farmaaya Woh
Oo Oo
Suddenly the Katrina in the TV got replaced. Geet blinked and blinked and then in confusion she scrubbed her eyes and looked at the TV. But nope, there was no change. In place of Katrina stood Geet dressed in the sample chudidaar she had worn two weeks back. And then Geet of the TV started dancing to the song while the real Geet gaped.
Ho... Uff Mere Dil Mein Thodi Khaali Si Jagah Thi
Uff Tu Ne Aake Bin Kiraaye Yeh Jagah Li
Kuch Keh Bhi Na Saki
Yeh Kaisi Babasi
Yun Chupke Chupke Aaya Bin Bulaaye Mehmaan
Uff Mere Dil Mein Thodi
Uff Mere Dil Mein
Uff Uff
Mere Dil Mein Thodi Khaali Si Jagah Thi
As the music started Maan entered the TV screen and started dancing with the Geet in the TV. Geet's jaw dropped open as Maan spun Geet around and around. The real Geet stared in shock as Maan dipped Geet and then pulled her up. But unlike earlier, when being pulled too close both Maan and Geet had moved away awkwardly, when the Maan and Geet in the TV got too close, Maan cupped Geet's cheeks and pulled her close to kiss her. The real Geet hid her face in her hands in embarrassment. After few seconds, she suddenly felt someone hug her from behind. Pulling away her hands, she opened her eyes and looked down at the arms hugging her and then she looked up in shock. She twisted only to see Maan grinning at her. Her shock only increased when Maan started singing the song.
Kya Kya Karaaogi Khwaabon Mein Humse
Khwabon Mein Humse
Geet simply blinked, her mind turning blank as Maan continued to sing for her.
Badloon Main Rang Kitne Khaamakha
Maan got off the bed and grabbing her hand, he started dancing with her, spinning her, dipping her and doing moves she had only seen in the movies.
Uda Uda Banke Gubbaara
Mera Dil Buddhu Bechaara
Haule Haule Tu Ne Pukaara
Jahaan Bhi Wahaan Yeh Jaaye
Maan spun Geet in such a fast way that Geet fell right on the bed. As she realised that she was imagining Maan she giggled at her behavior and went back to watching the video where Katrina was back and started dancing again with the song while sitting.
Chalo Chalo Yun Aankhein Meeche
Dheere Dheere Yeh Tere Peeche
Zara Zara Yeh Kheenche Kheenche
Dekho Na Dekho
Humko Na Khabar Kab Kaise Aaya Woh
Oo Oo Oo
Dil Se Khus Phus Ka Farmaaya Woh
Oo Oo Oo
Humko Na Khabar Kab Kaise Aaya Woh
Oo Oo Oo
Dil Se Khus Phus Ka Farmaaya Woh
Oo Oo
Maan passed by her room just as music started in the song. He blinked in surprise as Geet stood up on the bed and started jumping on it in line with the music while doing some moves with her hand. As he watched her dance, a smile snuck onto his face without him knowing. Shaking his head at Geet's antics, he walked away from Geet's room and entered his study.
Meanwhile in the bedroom, Geet lied on the bed and closed her eyes. She imagined that she and Maan were back in the main hall dancing with each other, but without any awkwardness or fidgeting. Both were at ease and dressed in the sample dress, Geet happily danced with her Maan.
Kehne Ko Toh
Teri Wajah Se Hai
Saara Jahaan
Nayi Jagah Si Hai
Geet smirked as Maan pulled her close by her waist and sang for her.
Kehne Ko Toh
Teri Wajah Se Hai
Saara Jahaan
Nayi Jagah Si Hai
She pushed him away in a teasing manner but Maan was not deterred and pulled her back into his arms.
Sabko Khabar Aur Sabko Pata Bhi Hai
Yeh Jo Hua
Dekho Abhi Toh Chhodo Tum Bhi Yeh Bahaana Toh
Dil Ke Badle Dil Nazraana Do
Oo Oo Oo
Geet smiled shyly at him and shook her head.
Humko Na Khabar Kab Kaise Aaya Woh
Oo Oo Oo
Dil Se Khus Phus Ka Farmaaya Woh
Oo Oo Oo
Geet opened her eyes and grinned at her silly imagination. She sighed dreamily as the song continued, her mind focused on her almost kiss with Maan.
Ho... Uff Mere Dil Mein Thodi Khaali Si Jagah Thi
Uff Tu Ne Aake Bin Kiraaye Yeh Jagah Li
Kuch Keh Bhi Na Saki
Yeh Kaisi Babasi
Yun Chupke Chupke Aaya Bin Bulaaye Mehmaan
Uff Mere Dil Mein Thodi Khaali Si Jagah Thi
Humko Na Khabar Kab Kaise Aaya Woh
Oo Oo Oo
Dil Se Khus Phus Ka Farmaaya Woh
Oo Oo Oo
Humko Na Khabar Kab Kaise Aaya Woh
Oo Oo Oo
Dil Se Khus Phus Ka Farmaaya Woh
Oo Oo
Uff Mere Dil Mein Thodi Khaali Si Jagah Thi
Uff Mere Dil Mein Thodi Khaali Si Jagah Thi
The song ended but Geet was still lost in the almost kiss. It seems I cannot ignore my feelings, Geet mused after a while. Because there was an empty space in my heart and Maan has already taken the space for himself. I am not in love but soon will be. Now I cannot do anything. All I can do is wait for Maan to either make my life or break my heart. Till then I am onto this journey in which I will keep on falling for him.
