A New One 3 part story

AT WORK WITH ME

PART 1

I was as always waiting at the railway crossing, this happened every day; at exact 8:30 am the gates closed; mostly I would be here at sharp 8:29 and the gates will close after me, but sometimes I missed the gate with few seconds, today was one of those days.

I looked around, the trucks were seen on both the sides and I sighed and waited for the train to arrive. At last it came and what was this? It stopped mid way and then there was no ending, the other train was due at 8:50 and if this train chose not to move then the crossing will finally open at 9:25 and we had to report at work at 9:20 sharp.

I cursed hose extra five minutes I have given to read those FF updates on IF. Only if I had resisted the charm of reading them then, I would we safely sitting in my cabin reading them now. My office was just 5 mins drive from here.

Well to my luck the train moved and the gate keeper opened half the ledge of the crossing to let the small vehicles cross, I dearly waved at him thanking him and accelerated to the office.

I reached at 9:00 am and smiled at the attendant and signed the register, he gave me a glass of chilled water and that was too welcome on this hot humid monsoon morning. I thanked him and went to my cabin.

I returned downstairs to collect my form 16A from the accountant and as I were leaving the lobby where the registers are kept someone pushed me, I was startled and closed my eyes cursing the attacker, I waited for the fall but it never happened, the same person held me and I could hear him saying sorry.

I straighten myself, gave him a strict glare and headed to my cabin, on way I asked the attendant, "Who is this stupid man?"

The attendant sighed, "New recruitment, Madam"

I thought for a while and asked, "Which department?"

He said, "Yours"

I grinned devilishly, "Wow, first day and he messes up with her head, good"

After 15 mins someone knocked my cabin

"Yes"

My attendant was there, "Madam the director has called all the heads in his cabin"

I nodded and picked up the files, "Today the sweeper has not cleaned the window glasses, get hold of him and ask him to do his job properly" with that I left for the meeting

As usual we were informed that new recruitment's have been done is all the departments and after the introduction session, they will be send to their respective departments. The heads have to make them aware of dos and don'ts and give them work as per their CV.

In my department 3 recruitment have been done, I read the names and wondered who was he out if these three. I went through their CV's. All were my seniors it seemed they all have good industrial experience and were here as their respective firms needed to give them a disciplinary lesson.

The first one, Arjun Rathore, is a or say was a CEO of ABC firm, but had a bad habit of drumming his pen during the meetings and because of that many clients get irritated.

The second one, Dev Malhotra, is a MD of XYZ firm; he was always late for work.

"This may be my target" I thought

The third one, Maan Singh Khurana, is a MD of KC; he has temperamental problem, he is unable to hold his anger.

Now you may be wondering who I am, well, it's none of your concern at present.

Finally my secretary called me, "Hello, Ms. Handa they are here"

I smiled; I really enjoyed this work of training the masters, "Are they all dressed up as they should be?"

"Yes Madam"

"Ok send them together"

I settled in my chair.

There was a knock at my door, "Yes come in"

There came the three, dressed in pale sky blue half sleeve T- shirt and navy blue track trousers, with a sling bag hanging on each of their shoulders.

"Introduce yourself" I commanded

The first one, a well build man rising up to 6'2" in height, and had a yellow sling bag said, "I am Arjun Rathore CEO ABC firm"

"tch, ttch, no Arjun, here you are not a CEO of any firm, but you are just ARJUN, a HR an PR trainee" I said

He smiled at me sheepishly. I asked the second one to start, he was also a big man rising up to 6'1" and had a orange sling bag

"I am Dev Malhotra, I mean Dev, a HR & PR trainee" the second one said

"Good, you are a fast learner Dev" I appreciated him

He just nodded, he was not that man, but the third one was.

He also was good looking, no he looked like a Greek God, I looked at him minutely, he was not as tall as the other two, he rose up to 6' only, his muscles were bilging out of his T shirt, I frowned, and he looked as a man who did a lot of exercise. He had a red sling bag

"Introduction Mr. Khurana" I said after waiting for him to start

"I am Maan Singh Khurana, and remember I am not Maan but Maan Singh Khurana, and I don't believe that this training is a good idea" he said

"Well, this is for us to see or your respective people in charge who have sent you here to see" I said firmly

This man really had a bad temper I can smell; I wondered was he the person who said sorry to me downstairs and he did not look like someone who will apologize easily.

"I do apologize when I am wrong", he said

I was startled by hearing him say this, did he read my mind

I gathered myself and distributed them work according to their flaws.

Arjun was given a task to type 100 pages, 10 pages at a time without break and after every 10 pages he would drum his pen for continuous 10 minutes and then take a 10 minutes break.

Dev was asked to say good morning to each and every person on the floor with a difference of exact 2 minutes.

Maan was asked to go to the terrace and fill the 100 liters drum with water, with the help of 100 ml mug. The drum was kept at a distance of 100 mts from the tank.

As the day went ahead Arjun found it really difficult to go with drumming the pen and many times he drummed the table with his fingers, his success rate was 10%

Dev also was not in time, he many times wished 2-3 persons in 1 minute and at times did not wish anyone for 5-10 mins. His success rate was only 3%

Maan surprised me, he complete his job with losing patience and temper, not even once did he shout on the people hampering his work, he very patiently completed his work, his success rate was 100%

I wondered what his problem was; it was not related to work pressure, as I can see that he handled it very nicely.

I asked them to leave and come tomorrow at sharp 9:20 am

So by now you would have guessed who I am?

Yes I am a counselor and as this is story is posted on GHSP forum, no doubt that I am Geet Handa.

What I found strange in the pattern of these three trainees is that while Arjun and Dev started showing improvement after a month's exercises, Maan Singh Khurana or let's say MSK did not even show his flaw, he was always patient and hardly lost his temper. He always was in control on his mood swings. I did not understand how to cure something that did not exist.

After 2 months they were called

"so your 2 months are complete, you two have showed a relevant improvement and where as Maan, I mean MSK, I still am puzzled about you. Well, I have discussed with the director and other s, from tomorrow you 3 will come 3 alternate days here, i.e. on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. And for rest 3 days you will join your respective offices." I said

They nodded. Arjun and Dev looked thrilled while MSK showed no expression.

On Monday I disguised and went to Arjun's office and found that he many times was not able to resist drumming.

On Tuesday I told what I have seen and he was a little embarrassed

On Wednesday I went to Dev's office and found that though he was on time for his work but was late for his meeting

On Thursday I told him and as expected he was embarrassed

On Friday I went to MSK's office, and to my surprised found a different MSK there, I stumbled upon a scary secretary of his, she was almost in tears.

I talked to the people around and found that Maan was a perfectionist and he could not tolerate anything less then perfect.

I came back and reported to the director.

Arjun and Dev were relieved and were asked to report only on Saturday's

and I discussed Maan's case with the director. I now knew what I had to do.

I took a copy of the contract and told the director what my next step would be.

the Director almost laughed his head out listening to me, "Geet only you have the guts to tame the tiger"

I smiled and started implementing my work plan.

AT WORK WITH ME

PART 2

I changed MSK's time to report.

I knew that before 8:30 am the crossing closes at 8:15 am. And if something goes wrong the crossing will be closed till 8:40 or so on.

His reporting time was changed to 8:30 instead of 9:20 am

I was at my desk at 8:15 am waiting for the day to start.

I have made a good list of jobs for him.

As expected he was late for his work. As he entered my cabin I looked at the clock, it said 8:30, "You are late Mr. Khurana"

He said "Sorry, I did not know that the crossing closes at 8:15"

I gave him a stern look, "Are you giving me excuse Mr. Khurana?"

He was surprised by my matter of fact serious voice and apologized.

"It's your first mistake so apology is granted but there is no next time in my dictionary" I said

He gave me another shocked look, I could clearly depict that he felt humiliated.

I ignored him and sat down, "here this is the list of jobs you will have to do from today. Read it and ask whatever you have to now or never"

He took the list and read it, "What is this? I am your secretary from today on wards"

I just nodded

"This is not possible; How can I be a secretary of some woman" he frowned

I have learnt that he did not like women folk, he in his past was cheated by some girl and from then on he keeps distance from any female species.

During his time here I have noticed that he hardly talked to me just followed the instructions given and made no effort to interact.

"Yes, and from now you are not Mr. Khurana but just Maan" I said

"I don't agree with this" he frowned

I was prepared for this I forwarded him a copy of the contract, and pointed at clause 10 (b); it said that during this 12 months time he will follow all the instructions given to him. He can be given any work from a peon's to the director's and he will have to do it. His time between 8 am to 8 pm is solely for the company every 6 working days. He will follow the directions of his counselor.

I loved that defeated look on his face; but kept my face straight.

He read the list given to him and gave me a startled look.

I have got a list from his secretary about his working and have converted the same list to suit myself. The list actually had instructions he had given to his secretary.

"Any questions" I asked

"From where did you get this list" he asked

"Pardon"

"Nothing"

"Ok, now start your work, your desk is there" I pointed at the desk just outside my cabin separated by a glass partition.

He gave me a deadly look and went to take his seat.

His duty as my secretary started, I made his job easy for today and decided to keep lenient for a week, I had 9 months more to tackle with him, and I was in no hurry.

The week went cool as planned. I did not say anything to him, rather gave him no work, he many times smirked at me, I knew he was making fun of me in his mind.

On Monday,

"Where the hell is my coffee?" I shouted on the intercom.

Maan entered the cabin and silently place the coffee on the table, and left.

"Maan, come in" I called him

He came in and stood there

"Take these files and study them and make a brief summary of each, today at 11 am I have a meeting with client of file no CA/HR/01/2012; at 2 pm the client of file no. PR/HR/04/2011 is coming. Make arrangements for both the meetings at 6th floor conference room and also arrange for a dinner meeting with client of file no. PR/CA/08/2013 at our usual restaurant" I said, "You can go now"

He did not move, I looked at him, he gave me a strange look

"What happened?" I asked

"Could you please repeat it, I am not able to get it" he said

"Where is you writing pad?" I asked

"I did not bring it"

"WHY?"

"For the last whole week it was not needed so I thought"

Before he could complete I shouted, "Mr. Khurana, you thought, how convenient of you, now take yourself from here and bring the writing pad" I completed my sentence sarcastically.

He was hurt but went to fetch the writing pad.

I again told him everything at a fast pace, he had a difficulty in writing it, but showed no mercy.

He went out along with the files. I looked at the clock it was 10 am; he had 1 hour to make the summary, arrange the conference hall and everything.

I had already made the summary as I knew that he will not be able to do it.

And as expected he proved me right

At 10:55 I called him, "Maan bring in the summary the clients are on way, they will be here in 5 minutes. Have you arranged for the presentation and informed Pinky that she is the presentation in charge for this meeting"

He was speechless, I have not told him but had it written in the file.

"Who is Pinky?" he asked

"You don't know who is she?" I shouted, "Anyways I will inform her, have you checked the projector in the conference room and arranged for eatables and beverages for the meeting"

He was dumb found.

I have already informed Pinky who was at the conference room preparing for the presentation.

He was about to leave the cabin, "inform the receptionist to show the client in my office and not conference room, you go there and make arrangements" I said

He looked confused, "now don't tell me you don't know where the receptionist sits" I frowned

He looked at me sheepishly, "Maan what have you being doing here the whole week? Just sitting at your desk and snoring and making fun of me"

He was startled.

"Now, go and please take your writing pad with you, let me remind you that you will have to make the minutes of the meeting" I said sarcastically

I knew this would happen so I have made all the arrangements before hand, I have never needed a secretary I did all my work on my own.

The meeting went well, Maan had a great difficulty coping with the speed with which things happened. He was use to doing and now he had to follow us and had no right to interfere.

As the meeting continued snacks were served, Mr. Agarwal frowned at one of the eatables, it was an egg sandwich, he was a vegetarian, I apologized and gave Maan a murderous look.

The eatables were taken away, "Mr. Agarwal, this was what we wanted to tell, if your serve your employees what they do not like or cannot stand, how can you get proper outputs. You have to change your strategy to deal with them" I made up a story.

"Well Ms. Handa you always make things so easy to understand" the client said.

The contract was later awarded to our firm

After the meeting I called Maan, "what was that Maan?"

"I am sorry madam" he said meekly

"We could have lost the deal, just because you chose not to study the client profile before ordering the eatables." I frowned

This was not what I have planned, "If he would have eaten that sandwich, he would have definitely sued us. We would have been crumbled to ground"

"The mistake will not be repeated madam" he said

"If I would have a choice, you would have been fired, but" I shouted

He did not say anything

"Now, go and prepare for the next meeting and please remember the next client is a Japanese and he likes Indian Hara Kababa with Mexican delicacy, and he eats with his hands, so order something which could be eaten by hands without messing up"

Maan did his best and the meeting went ahead with few mistakes

During the coming month he faced many problems, at many times he was not able to cope up with the way we worked, ours was a counseling firm, and our working style was different from his KC.

Here we believed in making our client comfortable and molded ourselves as per his needs.

At one point I found Maan almost pale with embarrassment and once he was almost in tears.
