AT WORK WITH ME
PART 1
I was as always waiting at the railway crossing, this happened every day; at exact 8:30 am the gates closed; mostly I would be here at sharp 8:29 and the gates will close after me, but sometimes I missed the gate with few seconds, today was one of those days.
I looked around, the trucks were seen on both the sides and I sighed and waited for the train to arrive. At last it came and what was this? It stopped mid way and then there was no ending, the other train was due at 8:50 and if this train chose not to move then the crossing will finally open at 9:25 and we had to report at work at 9:20 sharp.
I cursed hose extra five minutes I have given to read those FF updates on IF. Only if I had resisted the charm of reading them then, I would we safely sitting in my cabin reading them now. My office was just 5 mins drive from here.
Well to my luck the train moved and the gate keeper opened half the ledge of the crossing to let the small vehicles cross, I dearly waved at him thanking him and accelerated to the office.
I reached at 9:00 am and smiled at the attendant and signed the register, he gave me a glass of chilled water and that was too welcome on this hot humid monsoon morning. I thanked him and went to my cabin.
I returned downstairs to collect my form 16A from the accountant and as I were leaving the lobby where the registers are kept someone pushed me, I was startled and closed my eyes cursing the attacker, I waited for the fall but it never happened, the same person held me and I could hear him saying sorry.
I straighten myself, gave him a strict glare and headed to my cabin, on way I asked the attendant, "Who is this stupid man?"
The attendant sighed, "New recruitment, Madam"
I thought for a while and asked, "Which department?"
He said, "Yours"
I grinned devilishly, "Wow, first day and he messes up with her head, good"
After 15 mins someone knocked my cabin
"Yes"
My attendant was there, "Madam the director has called all the heads in his cabin"
I nodded and picked up the files, "Today the sweeper has not cleaned the window glasses, get hold of him and ask him to do his job properly" with that I left for the meeting
As usual we were informed that new recruitment's have been done is all the departments and after the introduction session, they will be send to their respective departments. The heads have to make them aware of dos and don'ts and give them work as per their CV.
In my department 3 recruitment have been done, I read the names and wondered who was he out if these three. I went through their CV's. All were my seniors it seemed they all have good industrial experience and were here as their respective firms needed to give them a disciplinary lesson.
The first one, Arjun Rathore, is a or say was a CEO of ABC firm, but had a bad habit of drumming his pen during the meetings and because of that many clients get irritated.
The second one, Dev Malhotra, is a MD of XYZ firm; he was always late for work.
"This may be my target" I thought
The third one, Maan Singh Khurana, is a MD of KC; he has temperamental problem, he is unable to hold his anger.
Now you may be wondering who I am, well, it's none of your concern at present.
Finally my secretary called me, "Hello, Ms. Handa they are here"
I smiled; I really enjoyed this work of training the masters, "Are they all dressed up as they should be?"
"Yes Madam"
"Ok send them together"
I settled in my chair.
There was a knock at my door, "Yes come in"
There came the three, dressed in pale sky blue half sleeve T- shirt and navy blue track trousers, with a sling bag hanging on each of their shoulders.
"Introduce yourself" I commanded
The first one, a well build man rising up to 6'2" in height, and had a yellow sling bag said, "I am Arjun Rathore CEO ABC firm"
"tch, ttch, no Arjun, here you are not a CEO of any firm, but you are just ARJUN, a HR an PR trainee" I said
He smiled at me sheepishly. I asked the second one to start, he was also a big man rising up to 6'1" and had a orange sling bag
"I am Dev Malhotra, I mean Dev, a HR & PR trainee" the second one said
"Good, you are a fast learner Dev" I appreciated him
He just nodded, he was not that man, but the third one was.
He also was good looking, no he looked like a Greek God, I looked at him minutely, he was not as tall as the other two, he rose up to 6' only, his muscles were bilging out of his T shirt, I frowned, and he looked as a man who did a lot of exercise. He had a red sling bag
"Introduction Mr. Khurana" I said after waiting for him to start
"I am Maan Singh Khurana, and remember I am not Maan but Maan Singh Khurana, and I don't believe that this training is a good idea" he said
"Well, this is for us to see or your respective people in charge who have sent you here to see" I said firmly
This man really had a bad temper I can smell; I wondered was he the person who said sorry to me downstairs and he did not look like someone who will apologize easily.
"I do apologize when I am wrong", he said
I was startled by hearing him say this, did he read my mind
I gathered myself and distributed them work according to their flaws.
Arjun was given a task to type 100 pages, 10 pages at a time without break and after every 10 pages he would drum his pen for continuous 10 minutes and then take a 10 minutes break.
Dev was asked to say good morning to each and every person on the floor with a difference of exact 2 minutes.
Maan was asked to go to the terrace and fill the 100 liters drum with water, with the help of 100 ml mug. The drum was kept at a distance of 100 mts from the tank.
As the day went ahead Arjun found it really difficult to go with drumming the pen and many times he drummed the table with his fingers, his success rate was 10%
Dev also was not in time, he many times wished 2-3 persons in 1 minute and at times did not wish anyone for 5-10 mins. His success rate was only 3%
Maan surprised me, he complete his job with losing patience and temper, not even once did he shout on the people hampering his work, he very patiently completed his work, his success rate was 100%
I wondered what his problem was; it was not related to work pressure, as I can see that he handled it very nicely.
I asked them to leave and come tomorrow at sharp 9:20 am
So by now you would have guessed who I am?
Yes I am a counselor and as this is story is posted on GHSP forum, no doubt that I am Geet Handa.
What I found strange in the pattern of these three trainees is that while Arjun and Dev started showing improvement after a month's exercises, Maan Singh Khurana or let's say MSK did not even show his flaw, he was always patient and hardly lost his temper. He always was in control on his mood swings. I did not understand how to cure something that did not exist.
After 2 months they were called
"so your 2 months are complete, you two have showed a relevant improvement and where as Maan, I mean MSK, I still am puzzled about you. Well, I have discussed with the director and other s, from tomorrow you 3 will come 3 alternate days here, i.e. on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. And for rest 3 days you will join your respective offices." I said
They nodded. Arjun and Dev looked thrilled while MSK showed no expression.
On Monday I disguised and went to Arjun's office and found that he many times was not able to resist drumming.
On Tuesday I told what I have seen and he was a little embarrassed
On Wednesday I went to Dev's office and found that though he was on time for his work but was late for his meeting
On Thursday I told him and as expected he was embarrassed
On Friday I went to MSK's office, and to my surprised found a different MSK there, I stumbled upon a scary secretary of his, she was almost in tears.
I talked to the people around and found that Maan was a perfectionist and he could not tolerate anything less then perfect.
I came back and reported to the director.
Arjun and Dev were relieved and were asked to report only on Saturday's
and I discussed Maan's case with the director. I now knew what I had to do.
I took a copy of the contract and told the director what my next step would be.
the Director almost laughed his head out listening to me, "Geet only you have the guts to tame the tiger"
I smiled and started implementing my work plan.
