Chapter 41

Geet fell exhausted onto her bed. "Pinks, you have killed me," Geet said dramatically.

"What did I do?" Pinky said innocently collapsing on the bed beside Geet.

Geet turned to look at Pinky seriously and said "What did I do? Huh? Just dragged me around Delhi so you could sample all varieties of samosas? Really,Pinky. How do you manage to eat so my much? I couldn't keep up"

"It takes years of training" Pinky replied seriously, "and I have a condition that... makes me eat".

Got eyed Pinky suspiciously ''Go on"

"Well, I have hollow legs... ...honestly, my papa tells me all the time" Pinky said with a straight face.

Geet tried not to laugh, but gave up and let out an enormous chuckle.

"I like it when you laugh" Pinky said. "You haven't done it much since you returned from Hoshiyarpur"

Geet fell silent and thought about her answer. Finally she said, "well I have been missing my family, but you and Uncle won't let me feel sad will you?" Geet said hugging Pinky. In her head, she thought, "I also miss Maan and on some level I am sad about the future with him I left behind."

It was Monday morning and Maan hadn't heard from his detective. "He should have found out something by now" Maan thought "so why hasn't he contacted me? I will ring him".

Just as he was about to ring the detective his phone buzzed.

''Hello" Maan answered brusquely recognising the caller's number as the detective.

''Hello Mr Khurana. I just rang to let you know that we verified that Miss Handa attended the college you told me, but the only address on file was the hostel or an address in Hoshiyarpur. She moved in with a family in Delhi after a few weeks in the hostel, but she never updated the records".

''Damn" Maan shouted, then said "What about Pinky? Any news on her?"

''Well Sir, there was no-one in her class or year by that name, but there are 2 Pinkys listed in the entire college. I will investigate today and let you know Sir"

''Mmm ''Maan replied before cutting the call.

"Where are you Geet? Where are you? "Maan said out loud.

"Where is who Maan?" Daadi asked as she came to see Maan armed with a cup of black coffee. She had only caught the last piece of his self-talk.

"Uh, em, Daadi... no one... I mean I was looking for, for, for my... pen "he said hesitantly looking around the room avoiding Daadi's gaze.

Daadi thought something fishy was going on, but decided not to probe. She didn't want to upset Maan unnecessarily early in the morning. His mood would be off the rest of the day and Adi and the rest of the staff would have to pay!! She didn't need that bad karma.

"Ok Maan! Whatever you say, beta. Will you have some breakfast?"

"No Daadi. I have to run. I have an important meeting and I am already late" Maan said, leaving Daadi to think.

"Kuch to garbar hai" Daadi said looking at Maan's retreating figure. "And I need to find out"

"Pinky quickly, hurry up. We are going to be late" Geet said restlessly waiting by the door and tapping her wristwatch for effect.

"Oh Geet. Chill maar" Pinky said running towards her with her aloo parantha rolled up in her hand. "You cannot even let a girl eat in peace!"

Geet rolled her eyes. There was no point in arguing with Pinky, especially when it came to food!

Just as they were about to leave, Geet stopped Pinky and asked nervously "How do I look, Pinks?" Geet was dressed in a long black figure hugging pencil skirt, with a crisp white blouse and some killer black heels. She had left her hair loose and was wearing some minimal make-up consisting of kajal and pink lip gloss.

"Gorgeous...absolutely gorgeous Geet. You will have all the men running after you and the women seething with jealousy" Pinky replied.

Pinky's reply made Geet more nervous, "Oh no, that was not the look I was going for. I was thinking of a corporate look rather than a woman on the prowl look...I better go and change" Geet said running back into the house.

Pinky held Geet's hand and said, "Geet, even if you wore a coal sack, you would look gorgeous. Now stop this nonsense, we are getting late".

Geet and Pinky were welcomed into Khurana constructions by Rishi from human resources.

"Welcome Geet and Jasmine", Rishi said shaking both their hands. Geet looked at Pinky and mouthed "Jasmine" and both started laughing at each other.

Rishi looked at both of them wondering what had happened, but neither of them volunteered any information, and quietened down looking at the stern look on Rishi's face.

Rishi continued "This morning you will have an induction into the Khurana way of doing business as well as some IT and health and safety talks. MK insists that everyone starting in this company is given the best start. Okay? Follow me." When he finished, he gestured for them to follow him into the teaching rooms on the ground floor.

As Geet and Pinky followed, they missed the dramatic entrance of MK and the crowd of desperate women doing their best to impress him. Maan on the other hand saw 2 women dressed in Western wear, following the human resources director, one short and stocky and the other tall with a great figure from the back. He paused and watched the taller of the 2 women go. She reminded him of Geet, but he put this up to his imagination. "Maan, what would Geet be doing here?" he thought.

"MK... grreat Sssir...yyyou are hhhere. Ttthhe ccclient is waiting. Hhhe was very impressed with our proposal and wants us to take on some more of their ppprojjects." Adi said bringing Maan back to the present. Maan nodded and followed Adi to the conference room to finalise the discussions and close the deal.
