First of all I want to say that you chose the perfect title for this piece! It so perfectly summed up what the matter inside related to. 😊

The whole of this, I don't know what to say, story or chapter so beautifully showed the side of the negativity that often surrounds us in a totally different light. In a way that we normally fail to see. We curse, hate and dislike the ones who are bitter and show the same but we never think what caused them to become like this. I'm not talking about the crimes committed around the society. No. I'm talking about normal people having that little pinch of bitterness in them. If we are ever able to know how they had been before, what kind of circumstances they had had to face, how they coped up with it, I'm sure we cannot blame them for the lost pieces of themselves, the pieces that time and hardships eroded to make them rough, sharp and unbending..

Avi, the way you wrote Maya's perspective of her life, I can never dislike her any more! Really well expressed! 👏

Two messages I got from this piece. One, love always conquers. No matter how badly you've been treated by someone, if you keep on showering love and care towards them, your love will win over their harshness! Two, never lose your faith in Almighty. If you just believe that whatever He does is for good, and if you believe that He'll always keep your loved ones under His protective hand, you're not going to be disappointed with what you get! Another message that I learnt is it's never too late to set things straight. One hug, a few loving words and a caring pat on the head can do wonders! This is all it takes to put past the hatred and anger you've held for years at a stretch and set you free.. Thank you Avi for putting across such lovely messages in an amazing way! 😊

I don't think I can say more than this Avi. In simple words, I loved every word of this piece, it brought tears to my eyes, it made me smile and then sigh with relief in the end. Thank you for letting us read this wonderful piece from you! 🤗

And I do want you to write more often and post it too but only when you feel like doing it. 😊

PS: Is purple your favourite colour? 😃

I've always believed that every person is so because of his/her circumstance. Easier said than done, is what I thought before when I was told to forgive and understand the other person. But some incidents, some lessons, some experiences made me see sense and I would give credit to my mother for this, who played a key role in making me learn this lesson, which I believe made me a better person.
When I was reading Maya's perspective, I felt as if reading someone's personal diary. A woman who had no person to love other than her own child, who had not known to show the love, or express it, how can the woman forgive when the happiness of the person she loved the most was snatched? Though Kiran was as much a victim of the ordeal, since she believed it was Kiran's fault, it was natural to hold a grudge, and it was natural to feel envious of the strong relations she saw between the Khuranas. Somewhere she craved for such a support, such love when she was all alone.
And the constant love of the Khuranas was what have made her introspect. But the beauty of this part was that, the realization knocked her when she saw Kiran's dejected face, with forlorn expression, the happiness long gone, her face all worn out. It might have reminded her of her own past. How ironic that the woman who started hating her daughter in law had snapped out of it when she saw the first sign of resemblance of herself in the girl. Maya probably wasn't heartless to even wish her greatest enemy to suffer her destiny. How can she hope Kiran's life to be ruined then?
The reaction of Kiran was icing on the cake, when she broke down but still chided herself for not being strong. And the last phone call was cherry on top. Woh kehte haina you know who your loved ones are only at the time of distress. I am glad to have the re union but am gladder to know that Raj is safe.
Avi, that was brilliant. 👏

Untangling the knots...Maya's Story

It had been a three weeks since the news had reached them that her son Raj and his fellow soldiers were missing. She watched with high expectations as Maan came home tiredly. Every day he had been making the rounds to the army offices nearby trying to get more information from them. From his tired demeanor and dejected form she could imagine that there was no news today either. She watched him trying to console Kiran as he made his way to her and gave her the rundown. It was getting harder and harder to take the lack of news.

She made her way back to her room with her prayer beads in hand. Her fingers tried to move the beads around as she tried to focus on God's name. It was a losing battle with her faith when it came to her son. He was the only one that she had and she was the only one for him. Her thoughts drifted to the past. The early years of his life had been hard on them. People in society generally look down on the weak and those in need. She had been both. She was raised by a far off relation having lost her parents at an early age. While her far off cousin-mama was tolerable, he traveled a lot for work . Her so called mami had made life terrible for her and had married her off to the first reasonable match that could be made. Her marriage was also short lived as she lost her husband in an accident just before her son turned six. Not being too educated, she had to grasp for different menial jobs. Over the years she had become very reserved and unapproachable, working hard, barely able to make ends meet by herself. The only love that was easy for her to show was to her son. Her son had also faced a lot with her in those years. He was a bright loving and happy child but in the playgrounds those with new shiny toys and new things were the most popular and so he was generally left alone to play. She loved him like nothing else. Her life revolved around him and his around hers until the day he saw Kiran for the first time.

Kiran with her waist length hair, deep dimples in both cheeks and sweet, shy, smiling nature had won her son over at first sight. He was madly in love with her and when he saw the approval in her eyes for him, he was over the moon. He begged his mother to meet the Khuranas and arrange for a wedding immediately. She had to curb her son and his enthusiasm and with a great fear in her heart she had gone to meet the Khuranas. Coming from a very modest lifestyle, she was shocked by the grandeur of the Khurana household. Despite being so rich, they were nice loving people and had agreed to the wedding if Kiran was happy with Raj. The Khuranas had accepted Raj as one of their own and Raj and Maan had developed a deep bond.

The year that followed was of complete joy for all. Raj would go out of his way to show his love for his wife and Kiran who was equally crazy about him tried to spread it to her also. Those were the happy days. Kiran who was from such a wealthy household and who had servants at her one call had accepted her and her son whole heartedly jumping into the fray and tackling all the needs of their little household. She was always there for Raj and the care that she gave him made a special place for her in Maya's heart. All she wanted was her son's happiness. If she shut her ears to the besura singing that husband and wife did while cooking together, she was not to be blamed. If they danced around like lunatics when they heard a bhangra she averted her eyes. There was a gladness that had settled in her soul and for once Maya was happy with her lot in life. Never knowing how to sweeten relationships she had tried very hard to adapt to this new entry in their life. At times resentful, at times awkward she had struggled along with Kiran for her son's sake. She still remembered the day her son had found out that he was going to be a father for the first time. He had carried her across the hall overjoyed with this new happiness. She had been thankful to God that all her work was being rewarded with happiness for her family.

Then came the news of Kiran's father's death. Kiran had returned to work to help her flailing family. Raj had supported Kiran although he knew she was pregnant. He had been proud of her being a good daughter to her mother and a good sister to Maan. Maya found it difficult to take. She could not help compare her and her son's struggles to Maan and his mothers at that time. Maan who did not have to struggle because his sister sacrificed for him and worked. She envied Mamta too who had such a strong daughter that she never had to fight like she, Maya had to. Then came the fateful moonless night when it had all come crashing down. When Raj's first child was lost she completely lost all feeling for Kiran. She had no pity for her no sorrow for her. Kiran had put her own family before her son's child. This she could never forgive. For all the love he gave her all the sacrifices that he made for her, Raj had not come first for Kiran and as a mother she could not forgive Kiran that. No matter how much she tried to pray and contain her anger against Kiran the initial motherly feelings that she had felt towards her were lost. Raj had consoled Kiran and cared for her in his own gentle way. Maya had not found it in her to do that. The insecurities that she always had now turned into anger. The Khuranas and their life style, their affluence was all because of her son and her sacrifice. Since that day she had great pleasure in testing their patience to the limit. It was fitting punishment for them.

Somewhere a door shutting got her out of the thoughts of the past. Her hands fumbled with the prayer beads in her hand, her other hand over her eyes as if to wash the anger that she always carried within her away. She wished desperately to be granted some light in her life. In all that she had done it was only her son's welfare that she wanted. Silently and resignedly she prayed.
Over the past three weeks as her anger towards Kiran and her family had increased it was as if their love and care had increased at double that rate. Kiran who was a dutiful daughter in law tried hard more than ever to please her. Mamta offered her support unflinchingly at all hours of the day and night. Maan, who she was most angry with, went to the army office and even though he was such a high ranking member of society pleaded with every person from the lowest ranking official to the colonels to get information about Raj. Even Geet, who she had dismissed off as childish and flaky had sat by her reading from the Ramayana when her tear soaked eyes would not allow her to read. Aarav and Aaravi were kept totally unaware of all that was going around them. When she saw Aarav now she thought about her son when he was little. She was glad for the Khurana's being around. Aarav would never have to grow up alone while Maan and Geet were around.

She had watched her daughter in law over the past three weeks. She was trying to bravely raise her two children, keeping her faith in God and trying to take care of herself and Maya. Gone was the smiling, dancing, laughing Kiran who her son had fallen in love with. She looked tired, haggard and withdrawn. There were dark circles under her eyes and she looked like she had not eaten nor slept much over the last three weeks. She watched Maan, Geet and Mamta form a circle of love around Kiran and her. Despite all the tensions, the Khuranas had managed to retain a sense of calm and faith amongst them, not wanting to scare the children. Over the past few days, they had done everything feasible to take care of her and her family.

While the prayer beads rolled on in her hand, her thoughts still lay scattered. After a few minutes Kiran came into her room with her medicine. She took it from her carefully scanning her face. It was like looking in the mirror of her past. Somehow her face reflected the same need that she had herself felt in her days of struggle. Kiran who had always taken care of her and all her demands looked on the verge of collapse. If her son had been here today he would have never let her get so sad and upset. If Raj were here today it would break his heart to see his love in so much pain. It reminded her of the day he had left for his camp. He had told her "I am leaving my heart in your care Maaji, take care of them".

Suddenly the years of anger against this young girl dissolved and the mother in her arose. Gently she approached Kiran. She slowly patted her head. As if a dam had burst, Kiran started sobbing great giant sobs in her arms. She hugged her slowly patting her head. The soothing that she was doing was soothing her own shattered self. It is true that giving of yourself can heal you more than ever and she felt that today. A sense of calm enveloped her. She felt a new resolve within her. Her path needed to change. She had to let the past hurt and anger go. This was her family, her Kiran, her grandkids and as the head of the family she was going to care for them. She held down her own tears as she consoled Kiran, patting her hair gently, giving her a chance to compose herself. As soon as the dam had burst, Kiran's tears subsided gradually and she grew apologetic.

Kiran: "Sorry Maaji, I am sorry"

Maya: "sorry kyun beta?"

Kiran: "I had promised your son I would take care of you and be strong, and today I am becoming weak. It is not that I have lost faith in God, I still have full faith in him. I know that nothing has happened to him, my heart tells me he is fine. I just want to hear his voice, know that he is OK".

Maya just kept patting her head softly and let her speak. Their anxieties were the same. They both loved the same man with all their hearts. He was her son and he was Kiran's life.

Kiran: "Sorry maaji, I need to be better, stronger; I will try not to disappoint you ".

Maya: "Sorry mat bolo Kiran. Tum mera bohut khayal rakhti ho. I have never said this but you are the best person for my son and for me too. Stop crying now. See I am here with you, you don't need to worry. Now wipe your tears before the children see you upset. Look at your Mother, Kiran. Look at Maan and Geet. Since the news has come, no one in the family has had a proper meal. Let's do something for them today. Let's both make a meal for everyone. Let's show them that women in our khandan are strong and caring. For today let us put our fear aside and let our faith in God reign. Maybe somehow somewhere God will pass us in the test we are going through and we will come out successful sooner". She helped Kiran rise and wash her face. Slowly both of them made their way to the kitchen and closed the door.

Mamta, Maan and Geet who were passing by could not believe the scene they had just seen. A peaceful feeling entered their hearts. Maan's eyes were in tears to see the acceptance his Di had finally got back in her family. Geet said a quick prayer to Babaji hoping that this new understanding would always remain in her Di's life. Mamta was too overwhelmed and tears streaked down her face as Maan and Geet gathered in for a family embrace.

As they prepared the dinner plate for "bhog" to be offered to the Lord, the phone rang. Maan who was nearby had Aaravi fidgeting in his hands so he hit the speaker button.

Maan: Maan Khurana here.

Person: I am Lt. Sahni calling from the army offices Mr. Maan. Just wanted to let you know that we have been in contact with your brother in law Raj. Him and his battalion are safe and sound. There was some road blockage and due to some equipment failure they were not able to communicate with us. Please convey this to the remaining family members. Good day Mr. Khurana.

😊Hope you liked it Palin. Thanks for all your writing.

Sorry for typos and grammar mistakes. I tried to proof it as much as my crazy lappy allowed.

frst let me control my tears😭 ...damn they aren't stopping
Avi dear fabulous piece of writing ...as we say there's always a reason behind everything, we nvr tried to unndrstnd y Maya Aunty has so much hatred towards kiran n khurana's ...n aftr reading today's chapter it was all justified ...i mean evry single person has its own positive n negative traits ...its their nature n nature develops within your surrounding, how we nurture it...Maya ji is giving, what she got...
yeah we can say she shud be evn more understandable when she faced so much in her life n shud nt behaved d way she behaved wid kiran ...but dats d point...her perception was different n its her personality trait...all d while she knew kiran is a gem bt her motherly luv n anger is stopping her to accept d fact ...but now i am happy dat she accepted kiran n khurana's whole heartily 😃
nd m grateful to you dat we got to know more abt Raj...he's a lovely person
plz Avi dear do write more... i luvd ur writing😛
