Chapter 9

Geet came back out of her nightmare with a shuddering gasp to find Dadi holding her close in her arms and rocking her back and forth, cheek to cheek tears flowing out of both their eyes.

"Muzhe aur Miri ko bachane ke liye meri aai uss khayi mein kud padi uss rakshas ke saath aur main kuch nahi kar saki. Sirf dekhte reh gayi. Anita masi aur Rajesh bhaiyya ne mere samne dam tod diya aur main kuch nahi kar saki dadi kuch nahi kar saki.

"Jab meri ankh khuli to main Sawantwadi ke kisi hospital mein thi. Ek lady constable Miri ko mujhse alag karne ki koshish kar rahi thi. Aur Miri jor jor se chikhkar mujhe chipakar, mujhe mamma utho mamma, nahi main mamma ko cholkar nahi jaungi kehkar pukar rahi thi. Mujhe sirf do cheezon ka ehssas tha uss waqt, mere pair me ho rahi aag aur meri gardan par girne wale Miri ke garam asu. "

Maine lady constable ko ishara kiya ki woh Miri ko mujhse alag na kare, shayad main unse kuch had tak keh bhi payi saari ghatnao ke bare mein, aur dobara apne hosh kho baithi.

"Iss baar jab ankh khuli to Miri mujhe chipakar so rahi thi aur kamre mein Baba aur Brij maujood the. Baba mere balo ko sehlate hue ro rahe the aur Brij zor zor se chillakar kisi se baat kar raha tha."

Geet remembered the pain in her baba's eyes. And the first words that had come out of her mouth were,

"Aap mere Baba nahi? Woh Rakhsah mera pita tha? Aap ka khoon nahi daudta meri rago mein, balki uss uss rakshas ka…." Geet broke down unable to continue any further.

" Ek hi raat mein mere aur Miri ke liye saare khoon ke rishte khatam ho gaye. Kyun baba, kyun, "she sobbed.

Mohinder couldn't see his daughter, for she was the daughter of his heart if not blood, in this piteous state. He'd lost his wife but he would not let anything happen to his daughter. She was his only his.

"Nahi meri bacchi tu meri beti hain Tu tere aai ki aur meri beti hai. Sirf hum dono ki. Jab tu paida hui thi teri aai ne tujhe mere hathon mein rakha tha uss waqt tune apne nanhe se haath se iss baba ki ungli ko pakda tha. Uss din se iss baba ne tera haath kabhi bhi nahi choda. "

"Tu mera khoon nahi meri jaan hain. Mere jigar ka tukda. Woh dekh tera bhai tere liye saari duniya se ladhne ke liye khada hai. Apne boss se kehkar air ambulance ka bandobast karaya hai. Hum do ghanto mein wapis Delhi mein honge."

When the police had called them a few hours ago Mohinder and Brij had dropped everything and caught the first flight to Goa which had the closest airport and then hired a car and raced to the hospital in Sawantwadi where Geet was admitted. On getting there they had gotten bits and pieces about what had happened and pieced everything together. The police had received an anonymous tip and been alerted to the incident. They had reached the crime scene to find a young woman with a gunshot wound in her thigh and a child in her arms whom they had shifted to the local hospital. The bodies had been recovered.

Mohinder had tearfully claimed his wife Anita and Rajesh into his custody and spat on Subhash Rao's dead body.

"Agar tu mara nahi hota to aaj main tujhe yahi zinda gaadh deta. Par mujhe fakr hai apni Rano par jisne aaj tujh jaise shaitan ka vinash karke apni bacchi ki jaan bachane ke liye khud ki jaan daav par laga di. Isliye nahi ki woh uska khoon tha, par isliye kyunki woh usse apni jaan se bhi zyaada pyari thi. Arey rakshas tu yeh kabhi nahi samjha ki, kahin toh khoon bhi paani hai, aur kahin, khoon se kahin zyada, pyaar aur isiliye tu nahi main pita hoon uska sirf main. "

Mohinder gave a final look at the dead man and went back to his daughter's side

Brij came to Geet and lifted a sleeping Miri out of her arms.

"Tu fikar na kar piddi. Tujhe kuch nahi hoga. Tu bilku thik hai piddi bilkul thik", he told her in a voice that had a faint tremor in it.

He only ever called her Piddi, when he felt overwhelmed by something, or was really nervous, or trying to console her. Her aai had always loved sharing that story. When Geet had been almost 3 years old aai had left Brij to watch over her for a moment and gone to the neighbor's. Geet had taken a tumble and started howling. Little Brij had been trying to get her to stop crying by making different sounds and calling her different names, but nothing had worked until he had unknowingly said the word Piddi. Geet's water works had stopped abruptly at that word and she had giggled. The moment he said something else she'd start ed crying again. This had continued till Brij had finally figured out that calling her Piddi was what tickled her, and so he had kept on calling out to her, "ole Piddi, meri Piddi, nunnu Piddi, motu Piddi" and so on until aai had returned and seen Geet giggling away with tears clinging to her lashes. When she had heard the whole story from Brij she had a hearty laugh and had shared the story with anybody who cared to listen.

Hearing him call out to her by that name now made her heart ache. Her brother was scared. She held out her hand to him which he instantly grabbed.

"Bhai—yya she called out hesitating on the bhaiyya. She nodded towards Miri and then looked at Brij, Aaj se main Miri ki mamma hoon, aap uske mama banoge naa?"

Though Brij did not know the complete story behind what had happened he had a fair idea. The fact that Geet was not blood related to him was not news to him, he had known about it a long time ago. He had even forgotten the reason behind his knowing that, because he never thought about it. In his mind she was and always had been his little sister. Now the hesitance in her voice at calling him bhaiyya and asking such a question hurt and for a moment he felt choked up could only nod his head vigorously. He finally got himself under control.

"Oye, agar tune usse apni beti banaya hai to main to mama automatically ban gaya na. Yeh mera haq hai, to phir yeh mama banoge ka kya matlab hai." His voice was gruff but the hand that wiped the smudge of dirt from her face was very gentle and trembled slightly.

She came back to the present and looked sadly at Dadi.

"Mujhe to laga tha aai ki maut ke saath mere saare rishte khatam ho gaye par jab maine zindagi ki dor phir se thami mere saath ek pita tha, ek bhai tha ek beti aur ek behen jaisi dost."

She paused for a moment and then looked at her leg.

"Jab hum Delhi wapis aaye to mujhe pata chala ki mere pair ki haddi yane mera Femur bone goli ki wajah se puri tarah se shatter ho chuka tha. "

She continued in a mocking tone, "Dr ne kaha ki main lucky hoon kyon ki meri femoral artery ko goli nahi lagi thi, agar lagti to shayad main zinda nahi bachti. Phir operations ke baad operations chalte rahe aur mujhe dedh saal wheelchair mein guzarna pada. Mera dayina pair titanium rod aur screws ke sahare pe khada hai. Dikhne mein badsurat hain par kaam chal jaata hain. Par kabhi kabhi dhoka de jaata hai aur main apne aap ko sambhal nahi pati hoon aur apna balance kho baithti hoon. Kabhi kabhi jab bohot stress ho jata hain tabhi bhi gaddari kar jata hain. "

She remembered how Adi bhai used to make up new shers and drop in to share them just before going to work and on his way back from work, how Pinky bhabi used to make sure at least one of her kids was with Miri all the time. While the kids were coaxing Miri to play with them, Pinky used to stay beside Geet hours on end and drool looking at different recipe books and tell her, "

"Geet tujhe aaj kaal mere aur Pari ke haath ka jala kata khana padh raha hai na? Tu jab thik ho jayegi tab yeh wali dish hume banake khilana thik hai?"

How bald Manchanda uncle used to drop by and sit at her feet and ask Geet to pick the whites out of his scant remaining hair. "Geet tu to waise bhi bekar hai, chal meri kaali ghani zulfon mein se yeh safedi ki chamak hata de. Main shyam ko atey atey tere liye golgappe le aaunga. Par khabardar jo tune ek bhi kala bal nikala. Har kale baal ke liye ek golgappa minus."

She had just wanted to be left alone to wallow in her misery, but they had refused to let her be. And then there was Pari. Pari who had adored Geet's aai and who'd shared a deep bond with her.

Pari's mother had walked out on her husband and daughter when Pari was hardly 5 years old. From the day Geet had brought Pari home, back in their high school days Pari had found a mom in her aai. Aai had been waiting eagerly for the day when Brij would ask Pari to marry him and she would permanently become a Handa. Pari and aai had a relationship where they mercilessly teased each other while sitting cuddled up.

"Aai kai lazalu porga aahe tujha. Ajjibat aplya bapavar gela nahi.Mohinder bauji kai hero aahet. Tula kashi palvun anli bagh Sawantwadi hoon sanglyanchya naka khalun. Ani tujha porga, mhanun tar mi nirlajj pane tyacha haat lagna sathi tuzhyashi magun ghetla ahe"

(Aai what kind of a shy baby son have you got? He is nothing like his father. Mohiner bauji is a hero. Look at how he stole you right under everybody's noses and brought you here from Sawantwadi. On the other hand is your son. That is why I've shamelessly even asked you for his hand in marriage.)

Aai would laugh at that and say," Eh mazhya porala jast tras dilas na tar bagh mi lagna nantar dusht sasucha avtar dharan karun tula bhayankar chalnar tuzhya jevnat vish ghalun tula marun taknar."

(If you trouble my son, after marriage I'm going to transform into one of those evil mother-in-laws and torture you. I'm going to poison your food.

"Aai tu mala zar sasu banun chalnar tar mi tula mazhya hatcha jevan ghalnar ani mala vishachi hi garaz lagnar nahi." Pari would wiggle her eyebrows at aai wickedly.

(Aai if you torture me as a mother –in- law, I'm going to torture you by feeding you food that I have cooked and I won't even be needing poison.)

They would banter back and forth trading insults, on lazy evenings with Pari cuddled up to aai on one side and Geet on the other with Geet laughing herself into fits of hysterics.

"Zar baherchya kuni ammhala baghitla tar tyanna vatnar aha kitti god, don muli ani tyanchi aayi agdi premane kurvalun baslya aahet. Tumche vishache baet zar tyane aiklet tar tumha doghinna saral vedyachya ispitalat nheun sodnar."

(If any outsider see sees us he's going to think how sweet, two daughters and their mother are curled up ever so lovingly together. But if your poisonous plans fall on his ears he is going to drop you both at the nearest mental asylum)

"Prayatna tari karu de kunala magh amhi amche khare rang dakhavto," they would both bite out in unison only to realize that they were just getting mad at an imaginary foe put in their minds by Geet.T hen they'd both turn towards her and roll their eyes at her as if she was the crazy cookie which would have Geet, yet again dissolving into paroxysms of laughter.

(Just let them try, then we'll show them our true colors.)

Geet smiled at the memories and smiled some more remembering the atrocious food Pari had cooked during the days when she herself couldn't. But she didn't care. Pari had been with her through it all. She had moved in with the Handa's for the first six months. She had spent hours massaging Geet's body when she refused to care for herself in the first few months and focused only on Miri.

She had cried together with Geet, while reminiscing over all the wonderful memories of aai. Geet would wake up screaming night after night after a horrible nightmare. Miri would wet the bed every night and wake up sobbing. Pari, Miri and Geet all 3 had slept in the same bed with Miri in the middle. Pari would soothe Geet and while Geet patted Miri back to sleep, Pari would rock Geet to sleep in her arms. She had slowly bonded with Miri who refused to leave Geet's side for more than a few minutes at a time. She had slowly managed to coax small smiles out of the little girl and Geet which had gradually turned to wider smiles and slow laughter as the zest for life gradually returned to the Handa house. Pari had practically put a hold on her life for those 6 months and lived for the Handas. Geet thanked God every day for sending a Pari in her life.

Exhausted both mentally and emotionally, Geet now straightened out on the sofa and laid her head on Dadi's lap, hugged her waist, turned her face into dadi's stomach and cried with great gasping sobs.

"Aaj itne dino baad aise lag raha hai jaise meri aai mere paas baithi hai dadi. Aaj aapki gaod mein let kar phoot phoot ke rone dijiye dadi. "

"Aai, aai aai aai", Geet kept on calling out, over and over again.

Dadi's heart wrenched seeing the deep sorrow in this young girl's heart who was trying to burrow inside her to escape her pain. She hugged Geet closer, loosened her braid and started drawing her hand through Geet's hair gently.

"Ro le bete ro le.Apne dil ka sara dard iss dadi ki goad mein utar de. Par bete yeh dadi janti hai ki tu bohot himmatwali hain meri bacchi. Itna kuch hone ke baujud apni himmat nahi hari. Jiski bhi zindagi mein shamil hoti ho vaha khusiyon ki bahar lati ho."

"Doosron ke liye apne baare mein soche bina ladh jati ho. Isiliye to uss din, Dev ke school mein mere liye un auarton pe gussa ho gayi. Tab to mujhe tum janti bhi nahi thi. Mujhe aur mere Dev ko to jaise phirse zindagi jina sikha rahi ho. Tumhare saath in teen mulakato mein hum jitney hanse hai, shayad pichle paanch saalo mein milakar utne nahi hanse."

" Tumhari beti, tumhare baba, tumhara bhai, tumhari dost, tumhare padosi, main Dev hum sab ka tumhare saath koi khoon ka rishta nahi. Par phir bhi hum sab tumhari taraf khiche chale aate hai kyun ki tum apne dil ko humare dil se jod deti ho. Bina kuch soche bina kuch maange. Tum bohot amir ho beti. Dil ki raeesa ho tum."

Geet suddenly stirred but did not get up. She was feeling a very warm comfort in dadi's lap and she wanted to feel it for some more time.

She suddenly laughed cynically,

"Dadi mein sahi mein raeesa hoon. Kanoonan main karodo ki zaydad ki malkin hoon. Jo bhi aai ke naam pe tha woh sab ab mere naam pe aa gaya hai. Itna hi nahi, aai ki maut ki khabar sunke unke maa baap ko uss rakshas ki sacchai ka andaza hua. Unhone unki saari zayda bhi mere naam kar di hai".

" Woh sari zamin zaydad, dhin daulat jo meri aai, Rajesh bhaiyya, aur Anita masi ke khoon se sinchi hai, jinki maut jis dhan aur daulat ki wajah se hui uski main malkin hoon. Nahi chahiye mujhe woh sab. Kuch nahi chahiye waha ka. Sad jane dijiye wahi pe woh sab. Uske bare mein main sochti bhi nahi hoon. Main uss jagah pe kabhi wapis nahi jaungi. Kabhi bhi nahi."

Then suddenly out of the blue, she had a flashback of that man questioning her ethics. She felt a burst of indignant anger. The anger felt good after all the tears and heartache and she unconsciously blurted out,

"Aur woh Maan Singh Khurana woh sochta hai ki mujhe usse."

Just for a moment dadi's hand jerked and tightened in Geet's hair and Geet gasped and sat up.

"Sorry Dadi galti se mere muh se kuch to bakwas nikal gayi. Bhool jaiye usse."

But no way was Savitri Devi going to let this opportunity pass. The moment she had heard Maan's name on Geet's lips she had been all ears to know more.

"Bete kya hua mujhe bataiye na?"

"Abhi thodi der pehle tumhare babuji ne kaha tha ki Brij uss aadmi ke liye kaam karta hai. Aur uss din hotel mein bhi Maan Singh Khurana ki party thi. Zaroor kuch hua hai. Bataiye bete . Aap iss Dadi ke saath itna sub kuch share kar chuki hai to phir yeh baat kyu nahi."

Geet hesitated for a moment and told dadi about the encounter in the balcony. However, she did not think it necessary to add the part about her brief attraction to that man, since it was no longer true.

Savitri Devi was really mad at her idiotic grandson. How could he misjudge such a wonderful girl was beyond her grasp. However she felt compelled to redeem her grandson's character a little, since he was her grandson after all and his actions reflected back on her.

"Hum unhe thoda bohot jaante hai bete. Waise hume itne bure nahi lage woh toh. Shayad galat faimi ki wajah se bhadak gaye honge."

Geet nodded at Dadi,

"Main janti hoon dadi. Jab main party mein gayi thi to mujhe laga ki kitna accha insan hai yeh jisne aisa charity ball ayojit kiya hai. Dil mein bohot samman leke gayi thi uss insaan ke liye. Socha tha mera sapna bhi batungi uske saath to woh samajh jayega. "

"Par phir jab usne Miri ke bare mein ulta seedha kaha mujhse raha nahi gaya. Main shayad usse apne liye maaf bhi kar jaati kyuki kuch haad tak galti meri bhi to thi. Par Miri ke bare mein aisa kehna to galat tha na Dadi. Phir main chup kaise baithti?"

Dadi patted her hand.

"Aap bilku sahi thi bete. Hum sirf itna keh rahe hai ki shayad aap doobara usse milengi to galat faimi door ho jayegi. Aur woh aapko behter jaan sakega. "

Geet got up instantly.

"Nahi dadi kabhi nahi. Main dobara uss insan ka mooh nahi dekhna chahti."

Savitri Devi decided it was better to keep silent over the matter for now. But she was not giving up. She had made a decision in her mind. For some time now she had been a victim to life's trials and tribulations and lost herself in grief. But this young woman was the one who had shown her the right path. She needed Geet in their life. She wanted the music that this girl brought to their life. She was not blind and had seen the attraction that her older grandson, the blind idiot, Mr. Maan Singh Khurana felt for this girl in the few words he had spoken about Annapurna. She knew Dev needed her on different levels, the least of which were her professional capabilities. She herself wanted to feel alive again, and she definitely felt that around Geet and her daughter.

Savitri Devi came from a long line of politicians. She had never been a stay in the kitchen kind of woman. In fact all her life she'd been a never enter into the kitchen kind of woman. She'd loved the intrigues and politics that went behind the workings of a large corporation. In her younger days when she had worked alongside her husband she had been called a Devi Bonaparte behind her back. She was proud of that title. Napolean Bonaparte had been a brilliant strategist and to be considered a female counterpart to him had boosted her ego. And so she was going to do what she was best at. She was going plan, plot, scheme, lie if need be but she ws going to make Geet a part of their lives.

Savitri Devi urf Devi Bonaparte was back.

*************************************************************

Hello everybody. So the updates are going to have a much lighter tone form now on as Gee't past has been revealed and all the sad stuff is behind us now.

"Kahin toh khoon bhi paani hai, aur kahin, khoon se kahin zyada, pyaar." Thanks Ritzy for that awesome dialogue. It fits in just perfectly with today's update.

Thanks Mayyo for advising me on calling an heiress," Raeessa". I wanted to call her raizadi, I don't think such a word exists, but in my dictionary.

I also want to thank Sphinx. She always waits for my updates ever so eagerly and always prods me every few days to update faster. Today's update is especially for her.

A small narrative:

I had neighbors just like Geet in my younger days, meddlesome but very loving. Whenever I or my sister got sick, they would pop in and out to check on us, and the best advice they would give us was get plenty of rest. And all I wanted to tell them was, I would take your advice if you'd just stay out of our house. They did mean well though. They also brought lots of goodies with them I used to tell my aai why can't you just accept the goodies at the door and send them away for which she used to whack her poor sick baby.šŸ˜†

I had an old neighbor who was a police constable. When he retired he had lots of time on his hand and whenever he saw me he'd call me over and ask me to pluck the white's out of his hair. But he always made sure he checked each hair I plucked. He didn't want any blacks plucked. Hah! But I was smart too. Obviously I'd pick a few black by mistake. So I used to make sure I kept a few of his whites aside to show to him in place of the plucked black.šŸ˜† In exchange he'd give me a whole heap of mangoes and tamarind. They had trees after mango tress on their property. The best mangoes I've tasted to date.😃

Mere neighbour ka baccha tha. I know, I know what you guys are thinking. She had crazy neighors. And you'd be right, somewhat. šŸ˜† Somewhat isliye ki I was also part of that neighborhood. To mujhe chodkar, isliye somewhat. Anway, where was I , oh yeah neighbor's baby. He used to laugh and giggle and chuckle when we called him tuttu. It was hilarious to watch and free entertainment for us. Though for Geet I changed the name to Piddi.
