Chapter 1: The new Railway track

The largest conference hall of Khurana Constructions, which was only used for very special occasions, was filled with national and international journalists and reporters. The occasion for today's conference was the deal that would shortly be signed by India's most successful businessman and owner and MD of Khurana Constructions and the president of India Coal.

Ashutosh Thakur was a well-known and much liked personality in India. Little was known about his father Pritam Thakur but his mother Ramila had devoted many years of her life running an NGO and doing social work. Her son, Ashutosh, had followed her example of being a kind and helpful person. Along with his active engagement in politics, he owned a major coal mine in the small village of Hoshiarpur. From the start, Thakur had encouraged local people to work for him which had made him so popular. With increasing demands of coal around India and worldwide, he wanted to build an express railway track which would deliver goods straight from Hoshiarpur to Delhi. But his plan had faced much opposition from other political parties as most parts had to be funded by the Indian government. There were no benefits to the public, was on argument that had halted the signing of the deal for over a year.

Now, Ashutosh Thakur, Maan Singh Khurana and Vaijanti Deshmukh (a representative of the Indian Railway and Transport Ministry) had found a suitable solution.

After all people were gathered in the hall, the doors were closed and the press conference started.

"First of all, I would like the thank everyone who has gathered here today on behalf of India Coal and Khurana Constructions. As you all know, the issues that have been stopping us from starting this project have been successfully dealt with and Mr Thakur will enlighten you on how." The attention went to a middle aged man in a black coat and rather large moustaches.

"Thank you, Mr Khurana. Well, as you all are aware of, the building of the express rail track had seen much opposition. Ms Deshmukh and I have had many brainstorming sessions and found a solution which will be beneficial to the public." At this point, many reporters and journalists had pens and notebook in hand as not to miss a word.

"My original idea of a separate railway track had come due to the heavy load on the existing connection from Delhi to Hoshiarpur via Chandigarh. In the past years, the number of trains on this way has increased and so have the amount of unfortunate accidents and delays. To have a scheduled and timely transport of coal seemed almost impossible and would additionally burden public transport.

I understand very well that this new line costs a lot of money, most of which is also public money, hence I have decided to keep at least two wagons for passengers on every other train from Hoshiarpur to Delhi and to have a full train of at least four wagons on every train from Delhi to Hoshiarpur for public use." A lot of approving comments were heard from the crowd and after Ms Deshmukh read out the official verdict of the ministry, the documents were brought in. A shower of flash lights followed the singing of the deal by Maan Singh Khurana and Ashutosh Thakur.

A long day came to an end for everybody. While Thakur called it a day and left for home, Maan went to his cabin. Two people were waiting for him.

"Congrats, bro." The first man sitting on the sofa gave Maan a bear hug. Yash was Maan's twin brother by eleven minutes yet Maan was more mature and work orientated and also the head of Khurana family. This suited Yash very much as it meant that he had more free time to chill and enjoy life. The other man simply shook Maan's hand but Maan knew to value this gesture a lot. Aditya Desai was a very hard working employee and one of the most loyal and trusted ones. He had a major hand in redistributing all other work of Maan so that he could solemnly concentrate on this new project?" Yash rolled his eyes.

"Bro, can't you take a break for a minute? I am sure it will do you some good." But Yash received a glare from Maan, which was what he always got when posing this question. To say that Maan liked his work was a huge understatement. For him, work was his passion and KC his dream. Yash threw his hands up in defeat.

"Ok but how about we go celebrate in the club?" Again Maan declined as usual and Yash left, not wanting to spoil his evening by not going.

Once they were alone, Aditya adjusted his glasses and sorted the words he as to speak on the one topic both men never agreed on till date.

"Maan sir, there was one thing I wanted to talk to you about." Maan raised his head from the file he was reading.

"I think, with this new work load it would make sense for you to hire a new secretary." Maan sighed. He knew Aditya meant it well, that is why after him refusing every time, he still brought up the topic.

"Adi, you know that I manage well without one." Adi's eyes moved over the huge piles of paper.

"Yes I can see that. Look, I know that you have bad experience from the time you started here and I can understand when you don't want any distractions in office but let me find you someone for you. I promise to only show her to you if she suits the task, else I will not bother you." The day had been long and Maan was too tired to argue hence he agreed; only hoping that Adi would not find any suitable candidate.
