Chapter 12: A way out

Meera opened her eyes. Since her abduction, she had either been in cars, empty houses or guarded. She had tried asking for help, yelling and screaming but nothing had worked. She had seen other girls, her age, younger and older. It had frightened her, their state. She knew they were unwillingly involved in prostitution, forced by the same men that had forced her. She thought back at the girl she had seen from the car on one of her moves. She had looked frightened, too. Maybe she had told someone that she saw a girl in a car. But till now no one had come for her rescue. Suddenly, a door opened. One of the men came in, a girl over his shoulder.

"I am sorry sweety but for tonight you will have to share your room with her. Tomorrow you will be all alone again." He ran his dirty finger over Meera's cheek and she flinched back. The man laughed at her and left. Meera scrambled to the figure that had been dumped on the floor. She tired turning her and saw the same girl that she had seen before from the car.

A few hours later, the girl stirred. Meera, who had managed to get some water from a bottle made the girl drink.

"Hey, can you hear me? Please open your eyes, please." Meera whispered into her ears. Geet stirred, frowning and turning. She peeped opened her eyelids and found someone familiar looking at her. Meera had noticed that Geet was not tied down. Considering her state that was no issue at all. Geet was so full of drugs that she could do nothing, not even wake up.

"Please, wake up. Did you call for help? Did you tell someone you saw me?" Geet stirred more and tried to rack her brain as to where she had seen the girl.

"Hey, do you remember me? You saw me in a car. I was tied down and could only look at you?" Ah, now she remembered. After some time, Geet was partly awake. Her state was not good but she managed to gather her thought.

"Are you ok? Did.. did they do something to you?" she managed to ask Meera.

"No", she said in a low voice. Geet groaned.

"They you will be a trophy girl." Meera looked scared. However nice that sounded she was sure it was bad.

"What…what do you mean?"

"They take some girl for important men. They like virgins, girls who look fair and beautiful. They… they will send you to someone to be a trophy girl. You will be given away." Meera sobbed. She could feel her future looking worse than she had imagined.

"Why me? I…" Meera didn't say anything. She took Geet onto her lap and Geet tried to open Meera's ties. Her hands were tired and the knots were strong.

"How often do they check on you?" Geet asked in a weak voice?

"They only come once a day. But a maid brings food twice a day."

"How often did she come already?"

"She has to come yet." Geet leaned against the wall. She came all this way to rescue Meera. Well, there seemed to be no way for her to escape. The security was too tight for a trophy girl. But she would not let Meera end up like many girls have. It was better to die.

"Meera listen carefully to me. This is the only way I can see that will save you from harm." And so, Geet told Meera what she had to do.

After hearing the entire thing from Kavita, Maan was determined to go to Hoshiarpur and get Geet and Meera out of that mess. But he saw that Brij was not moving.

"Inspector, what are you waiting for? We know where the girls are so let us get moving."

"I can't. I have been suspended from work. I have no power anymore." Maan looked at the inspector in disbelief.

"What do you mean you can't do anything? What are you doing here then?" Yash yelled at him, his frustration taking over.

"It is not easy for me, ok. The commissioner himself ordered my suspension. Now you see how influential these people are that are running this racket." Savitry Devi had listened. She might be an old widow but she was also a well-connected old lady.

"Inspector Singh, Mr Khurana. I might be able to help you but for that you will have to be patient for another few days.

India was a proud country. They had a history, that could give a though completion to other countries. India was also proud of it different cultures. But India held a special kind of pride for its soldiers. They were men and women who stayed away from their family to protect the common people. And as respected as soldiers were, so were their widows. In fact, the widows/widowers even had their own society, spending their days doing social work in the name of their dead spouses. One such person was Vasundara Dhanraj. Her husband had died during the Kargil war and she was also the president of the widow's society. They had an annual meeting today, discussing social issues and things they could do. Savitry Devi had brought Brij, Maan, Yash and Kavita with her. The society members had been told before and hence Savitry Devi started narrating. Brij and Rashi/Kavita gave their input till every member was fully aware of the situation.

"Mohinder Handa, you say. I knew him personally. I am proud of his daughter, following in his footsteps." An old man said. The others nodded.

"I am honoured to hear of this issue but how can we help you, young man?" A thin and fragile woman asked Brij.

"Ma'am, the commissioner himself got me suspended when I started digging in the old files of Major Handa. Although I am fully aware of what is going on, I can neither help the girls nor find out who the real culprits are." The others understood.

"I can understand. Pankaj is the son of an army mate of mine. I thank god he is dead before he saw what his son turned out to be. You are right we will have to do something." The society members pulled all strings available. At the end, they thought it best to call in a few favours.

"Young man, we cannot inform the authorities because as you said yourself they are somehow involved but the people that we have called are specialized in missions like this. This is all we can do." This was much more than Brij had expected. He had a troupe, a group of men who could go on this mission. One of them, Ali Khan his name was, make a detailed plan. Maan and Yash insisted on coming along. At first, Brij was strict against it as it was a military, admittedly unauthorized, yet military mission. But as both men were stubborn, Brij told them what they could do.

Chapter 13: The last Mission

Meera knew it was time. An hour ago the same men had come to take Geet away. She was asleep or at least pretended to be. She didn't know what they would do with her. And now was her turn. She was being taken away. The car that had come to take looked expensive. In fact, it was the same make of a car Yash had. Yash, she had spent most of her sleepless nights thinking about him. Now that all was coming to an end, she wished she could have told him how she felt. She wished she could see his smiling face once more. The way he made her feel special, protected, loved. All was going to end. At least, she told herself, she was going to die untarnished.

When they entered Hoshiarpur, they noticed it straight away. Experienced military eyes saw the men in casuals, looking like locals but with concealed weapons. The initial days, Khan's team surveyed the area and blended into the local crowed. Brij, Maan and Yash, all three quite known men were on the Hoshiarpur border with Khan and discussing the plan.

"Team A said that the north part is heavily guarded. There are buildings that look deserted but those are impossible to get to. Team B has said that the west side is free to enter but it will be difficult to get to the main buildings without being noticed. Team C is has said that there is one building which is not much guarded, in fact the guards differ that from the other buildings. This is strange because this building comes into the territory of the enemy."

"Who does the house belong to?"

"A Mister Ashutosh Thakur."

Meera tried to control her emotion. She had only one 'go' at this. As she was being dressed up, she hid the knife in her clothes. She could not do anything now, if she did they would call the ambulance and then she would return anyways. The maids left her alone and she took deep breaths, hoping against hope for a miracle.

Geet couldn't remember anything. Her mind was clouded, her body felt heavy. She was squeezed in between other bodies. All were tied up, silent. The only thing she could hear was the horn and then she felt her body rattle continuously.

They waited for night. Khan made sure his teams were all set. Before they started the last step of their mission, Brij informed Savitry Devi and Vasundara Dhanraj. Both ladies were on alert. They knew that high ranked officials were aware of what was going on and hence would panic if all went well tonight. It was only a matter of time to get the culprits caught.

As Khan gave signal, the first team made their move. The local men had dropped their guard at night and Khan's team was using the shadows and silence for their benefit. The first few men were down; the back door was now free. As the first team entered, more men were killed. They reached the first door and landed the jackpot.

"Sir, we have girls over here." Khan sent in team two that was to get the girls out while team one continued to go further inside. Meanwhile, a larger team three, consisting of Brij as well, made their way to Thakur's villa. The guards were awake and heavily armed. Brij motioned the men to make their move and a few silenced shots later the first few guards were down. They had to hurry. If even one guard noticed anything wrong, they would start the alarm. Brij wanted to get to the large fish. He knew his way around the house thanks to the many visits he had paid Thakur in the past. Just the thought of being able to wipe of that damn smile off his stupid face was making Brij light headed. He got to the study, it was dark and empty. He moved quickly to the bed room that was empty as well. But then he passed a door and heard muffled voices. He lifted his gun, ready to burst in when he felt cold metal on his head.

"Don't move or you are dead, inspector."

Maan and Yash were eagerly awaiting the return of team two with the girls. From what they heard, there were a lot of them. Both hoped that they would find Meera and Geet unharmed even though the chances of that happening were slim. When the team returned with the first bunch for girls, Maan and Yash asked them if they saw Meera and Geet with the help of the photo. It was almost pointless as they all were drugged. One girl, though, remembered seeing Geet.

"She… she was caught in her first week. She had asked us if we had seen or met a girl called Meera."

"Did you?" Maan asked. The girl shook her head.

"Bro, I am afraid." And so was Maan. He couldn't bear doing nothing. He had to do something or he would burst. He felt so useless right now. He thought of Brij, the man should have contacted them some time ago. What was going on?

"Ah, I see we meet again inspector Brij Veer Singh. Actually it is ex-inspector, isn't it?" Thakur, who was in his morning robe, smirked openly.

"I had always thought of you as a wise man, inspector. But what made you come to my house at night and that, too, armed?" Brij did not answer, the gag prevented him from speaking but he would not say anything anyways. His eyes were roaming around, trying to see if he could do something to get the other men's attention.

"Well, I would have liked to entertain you further but I have plans for tonight, quite charming plans indeed. So if you excuse me." Thakur's fake smile slipped from his face and he indicated his security guard to finish Brij off.

The guard raised his gun and held it to Brij's back. Brij closed his eyes but the shot never came. He opened his eyes and saw Maan with a vase in his hand, the guard down.

"The other guards are down, where is Thakur?" Brij spoke as the gag was being removed.

"He was here a minute ago, he can't be far." Just then, they heard loud noises from the adjacent room. Maan, Brij and Yash ran towards the room and burst in.
